THE SHEPHERD'S WIFE
There are times in this wumman's life, when she wunners whit oan earth she did that wiz sae awfu' as tae get her sic a man an' twa sich glaikit sons. Tak' last week fur example.........................................................
Ah goat up aboot dawn tae mak thur breakfast as usual.Bread an' cheese an' goat's milk ready tae tak up tae the law pasture fur them.....They're shepherds,by the way ,or at least they're supposed to be..
Ah wis busy in the kitchen, jist singin' awa' tae masel' ....like ye dae.. when the door burstit open an' there's the yingest yin staunin' .A hauf-daft smile oan his face ."Oh Mam," he says. Whit's a wumman supposed tae think? Then ma oldest laddie appears an' he's in the same daft stupor, "Oh, Mam!" he says.
Well, ah wis jist aboot tae clout the pair o' them fur runnin' aff tae that inn, when in walks the bold faither. "Brilliant, dead brilliant." he says That wis it ! Ah thocht- they're mad or drunk or baith ! But there wis nae smell o' the drink oan them. When ah goat them calmed doon at last, they tellt me their tale....between mouthfu's o' bread an' cheese ....they wurnae that daft !
The nicht afore they hud been oot oan the hills an' when the dark come richt doon they lit a fire. Then they hud thur meal an' settled doon tae the tellin' o' tales tae pass the time. When oot o' the heavens cam' a great licht, an' they wur totally astoondit fur a voice spoke oot o' the licht .
"Dinnae be feart, fur ah've goat guid news fur ye's a'. This nicht in Dauvit's toon, Bethlehem, is born a bairnie wha'll be cried ,"Christ the Lord." An' jist tae prove it, ye'll find the bairnie lyin' a' happit up in swaddlin' claes in a stable-trough."
Then they says, the sky wis fair lit up wi' a hale crowd o' angels singin' ,"Glory tae God in the Highest ,an' oan earth peace an' guidwill tae a' men." The angels disappeared an' the sky wis black again wi' only the stars fur licht.
So ma three heroes took it intae their heids tae gang tae Bethlehem an' see fur theirsels gin it wis true.Weel, ah near ca'd ma man's heid aff. !
"Ye wurnae that keen tae see either o' oor twa laddies efter they wur born." ah says. He jist ignored me an' cairried oan wi' his story.
They scram'led doon the hillside an' ran fae stable tae stable, till they foon' a young lassie an' her man in a stable by an inn......(noo, there's a surprise. ! )
An' in the stable-trough, a bairn- jist as the angel said. "Aye",says the wee yin," An' ah gied him ma best lamb." "Ye did whit ??," says I, "Are ye aff yer heid, throwin' guid lambs awa' oan strange bairns." It turned oot they spent the rest o' the nicht traipsin' the streets, tellin' folk whit they'd seen an' heard ! Ah'll nivver be able tae hold ma heid up in the Wumman's Rural again ! Ah could've wept.
But ah'll tell ye this much. Ah'm glad ah'm no married oan yin o' they so-called Wise Men wha rode intae toon this week, lookin' fur the same bairn, Ah mean wha wants tae admit their man chases stars fur a livin'..........................................................* * * * * |
