Peter was arrested and put in jail. He was guarded day and night.
Meanwhile, the people of the church were praying for him.
Day and night, they prayed for Peter's safety.
The night before he was due to go on trial,
Peter was sleeping between two guards.
He was tied with two chains, and there were guards on duty at the prison gates.
Suddenly, an angel appeared, the cell was filled with light.
The angel shook Peter by the shoulder and woke him up.
"Hurry, get up!",he said.
The chains fell off Peter's wrists.
Peter fastened his belt and put on his sandals, then put his cloak around himself -
just as the angel instructed him.
Then he followed the angel out of the cell and out of the prison.
He was puzzled, was this real or a dream?
They passed by the first guard post, then the second. When they got to the prison gate,
it opened by itself and out they went
They walked down the street, and suddenly, the angel left him.
At first, Peter was very excited at his escape, then he realised he was still in danger.
So he went to Mark's mother's house and knocked on the outside door.
Rhoda ,the servant girl answered the door.
But she was so excited when she recognised his voice,
that she ran off to tell her mistress and the others, leaving Peter at the door.
The people who were still praying at this point, could not believe it was true,
and told Rhoda she must be mad.
Peter started knocking and kept knocking till they answered the door.
Once they were quiet, he told them what had happened
and asked them to tell James and the others. Then he left again.
Back at the prison, a full-scale search was in progress.
Peter's escape had been discovered, and Herod was furious.
He was in the palace, one minute pacing up and down,
the next, jumping with rage.
When Peter couldn't be found, the guards were brought to him,
questioned without result, so he ordered them put to death.
