GUID KING DIFFERENT

Maggie sits mid-stage ,crying into a hankie.
Jeannie enters through curtain singing......


JEANNIE : 'Guid King Different looked out
           On the Feast of Shelters.." (stops abruptly)
           Whit's wrang ?

MAGGIE ; (between sobs)  It's Guid King Different - he's deid

JEANNIE : Deid ?

MAGGIE: Deid ! 'An him the furst decent King we've ivver hud 

JEANNIE: Whit bothers me is wha we'll get next .
         Wha wants tae go back tae a King like Snooty the    
          Furst  ?

MAGGIE : Ah'd forgotten aboot him - he wiz a right torag !   
         Forever building gold statues o' hissel' an'paradin 
         up an' doon in yon muckle coach.Wavin' at a' body
         an' expectin' them tae bow doon tae him.

JEANNIE : Whit aboot the wan that built yon huge castle wi'
          hunnerts o' bedrooms,50 kitchens and umpteen       
          turrets ?

MAGGIE : His Illustrious Majesty ,King Know -all !
         That castle fell doon.He insisted oan huvin' yin    
         mair turret..against the builders' advice.Then      
         blamed them when the wa's couldnae take the weight!

JEANNIE: But the worst huz tae be King Superior.

MAGGIE:  Aye.Taxin' the puir jist so he could build his      
         fancy castle wi' a' its gold this ,that an' the     
         other.

JEANNIE: Jist a cosy but an' ben tae hurry hame tae efter a  
         busy day o' openin' fetes an' launchin' ships.

MAGGIE : Maybe folk liked King Different sae much because he
         wis mair concerned aboot people than castles

JEANNIE: Ah don't think he ivver lived in a castle did he ?

MAGGIE: Naw, he wisnae even born in wan.Jist wandert aboot  giein'
             a helpin' han',tellin' stories tae wha'ever wid listen.

JEANNIE: Did ye ivver hear him speakin' ?   (MAGGIE NODS)
         He soondit mair Easterhoose than Bearsden...mair like a carpenter than a King .
         They said he'd willingly ludge in a single-en'. 
         He'd talk an' eat wi' folk maist Kings wid avoid  like the plague .
  
MAGGIE:  He certainly didnae act the wey ye expect o' a King.

JEANNIE : Hoo come he's deid onywey ?

MAGGIE : Oh , some o' oor elders and betters couldnae handle   the
                   idea o' a King livin' amongst ordinary folk.So  they killt him.
JEANNIE : Seems King Different wiz jist too different efter  a'  then......
                   Come oan ah'll buy ye a cup o' tea.
