“Buffy The Vampire Slayer” went waaaay off the deep end this week – seemed like one of those episodes that were taken from the “yeah, well maybe if we can’t think of anything else” drawing board. Sure, it was cute, but to wait all those weeks for a new ep and…well, I’ll tell you what happened.
Remember that sorta nerdy guy, Jonathan, who went to Sunnydale High with the Scooby Gang? He was the one who gave Buffy an umbrella at the prom, then he went nuts and shot at everyone from the bell tower. Well, Jonathan is now the king of sting. He invented the Internet. He starred in “The Matrix”. And he’s very, very good at killing vampires. Better, in fact, than the Slayer herself.

She doesn’t know quite what to do about a nest of vamps. Luckily, Jonathan comes up with a plan and saves the day. Buffy really isn’t herself at all--no quips, no brain farts, nothing. She can’t even think of a decent retort for snotty old Spike. Plus, she has Riley on the brain. Buffy can’t get over the fact that he slept with Faith (granted, Faith was sort of hiding out in Buffy’s body, but still). Jonathan encourages Buffy to find the strength to continue the romance.

Xander’s romance is still going strong with Anya. And Willow is still clutching Tara’s hand on a regular basis. Good lord, can those two just make out already? Is that so much to ask?

Willow really has to come to Tara’s aid when she is attacked by a very funky scary monster who has a strange pyramid symbol on his head. The gang consults Jonathan about this monster; but Jonathan doesn’t think anyone has to worry about anything. Little does the Gang know that Jonathan has that same pyramid symbol on his back.

Through her Jonathan-adoring haze, Buffy begins to wonder if he has cast some sort of spell on all of Sunnydale. A little research and ta-da--an answer is found. Because Jonathan has reinvented himself as the Ultimate Dream, he has inadvertently created a monster who is the Ultimate Nightmare.

Jonathan knows he has to do the right thing, so he and Buffy go and fight fight fight. Buffy tosses the monster into a deep abyss and saves Jonathan from falling with him. Now Jonathan’s a dork again, and the Slayer is back in business.

Cute, cheesy. This episode barely advanced the overall “Buffy” plot--there was one scene with that military mega-monster, Adam, but he just growled about death, dying, killing, blah blah blah. I want some action! Some sex! I want a main character to suffer horribly. (May I nominate Anya? I’m over her.) Let’s consider this “Buffy” an entertaining hiccup, and hold our breath for the next new episode.
