We’re in the midst of a slew of brand new “Buffy”s--could anything make me happier? Well, maybe if this week’s episode had been just a little bit less melodramatic…
Last week ended with Maggie Walsh trying to kill Buffy, then Walsh’s monster killing Walsh. We pick up with Buffy et. al. trying to put together the pieces over at Giles’ house. Buffy can’t quite figure out Riley’s role in the whole thing--and of course, at this point, she doesn’t yet know that Walsh is dead.

Riley storms in, demanding answers. He’s frustrated that “Hostile 17”, aka Spike, seems to be making himself quite comfy in the Slayer’s presence. He returns to the Initiative to get to the bottom of things. Meanwhile, Buffy and her pals move to Xander’s basement so they have some sort of safehouse.

Back at Initiative headquarters, Riley and the others discover that Maggie is dead. (Maggie’s doctor pal tells them to just hold off, but then again, he is the only one who knows what happened in Room 314--there’s a monster on the loose! Riley can’t bear to wait: he sends his fellow commandos on a mission to kick some vampire ass. His doubts about Buffy begin to grow.

Maggie’s monster, Adam, borrows a page from Frankenstein and kills an innocent little kid. Bummer.

Buffy shows up at Willy’s bar to get some info on the demon she thinks killed the little boy. Riley bursts in, all sweaty and clammy and threatening people with guns. Obviously, the kid is off kilter. Buffy takes him back to Xander’s to rest while she and Xander go on a recon mission to Initiative HQ.

Spike also gets into some trouble at Willy’s bar: the other demons aren’t too happy with him trying to kill his own. They beat Spike up and tell him to lay off.

Meanwhile, Willow is drawn back to Tara’s place to work some of that Wicca magic they love so much. For some reason, neither of them can get a full sentence out or stop stuttering or swallowing all the time--we get it! They’re flirting! Enough already. But we do get some insight on Tara when she purposefully spoils one of Willow’s spells. Is she scared? A troublemaker? Or maybe a very powerful witch?

Before you know what’s going on, Buffy, Xander, Riley, and the doctor guy are all locked in a room with Adam. Adam’s pretty bloodthirsty and curious. He gives this long monologue about how he’s made from all different demon parts, and he and Riley are brothers, and he has a disk so he knows what Maggie wanted to happen next…blah blah blah. Adam kills the doctor guy, bats Buffy, stabs Riley, and makes for the hills. The commandos burst in and steal Riley away to some sort of hospital (seems he was being doped by Walsh) where he sadly clenches one of Buffy’s hair accessories.

Too much action, not enough attitude. Spike was the only light note in the whole episode (in addition to when Xander tried to make out with Buffy so they would seem really “undercover”). But I was thrilled thrilled thrilled to see that our old pal Faith is going to show up next week!
