| Music:Where Is It Headed? |
| People are always asking me what kind of music I play, and I can never give them a straight answer. It's not that I'm stupid or that I don't like them, but that the particular term for my genre hasn't been invented yet. Music works in a cycle. Every few years you will have heroes bring true, artistic rock to the musical scene, only to have them die and have your pop stars take over for a few years. Then, a new wave of rock heroes will appear, only to burn out in a few years. Of course, you always have your exceptions; we still have Aerosmith, Pantera, and Pearl Jam (all from their respective periods), but this is how it seems to work. The world is ready for a rock revolution. But where do we turn? All we have are the likes of Nickleback, Saliva, and Puddle of Mudd. While I respect their musicianship, I don't see a rock revolution coming from them. Yet, pop is dying out again. What we are left with is half assed pop rock, thats ok to listen to, but not much on the artistic side. We need something new. We need a new sound. And that sound has no name. Not yet, anyway. I'm not saying I am going to be the next rock revolutionist, but what I am saying is that, like my music, something new that has not been identified yet has to happen. And even though these people may die out in a few years, the true heroes will stick around, or be the ones who were tragically cut short. But something new will happen. It has to. Because if it doesn't, true rock will die. |
