R.O.L.F.’s Favorite Saloons

You can’t traipse all over the mountain west chasing trout without working up a powerful thirst.  And where better to slake that thirst than in that western institution, the saloon (or bar).  This section will profile some of our favorites.  It’s as accurate as our memories allow.

MOONSHINE GULCH SALOON  -  Rochford, South Dakota

ROLF’ers resting outside the Saloon

Rochford is not on the way to anywhere.  Off the beaten path does not begin to describe its location.  But if you’re fishing in some of the beautiful streams of the Black Hills, particularly the upper stretches of Rapid Creek, and don’t mind a little detour or two, it’s worth the trip.

The Gulch would be right at home anywhere in the west.  A couple of steps up to a wooden walk, overhanging porch, a semi-false front, and you can imagine Marshall Dillon striding confidently by.  Only the batwing doors and hitching post are missing.

A few decorations and Peter’s “still”

Once inside, it’s hard not to be awed by the fact that virtually every bit of wall and ceiling is covered by what can loosely be called “memorabilia.” - baseball caps, antique beer bottles, posters of questionable humor, old newspaper clippings, fishing and hunting photos and more than a few unmentionables.  It’s mind-boggling, and a little bit disconcerting.  We found ourselves wanting to cover our cold ones, just to make sure nothing dropped in from above.  Our English member, Peter Dagger of Devon, spent considerable time checking out the stove.  Given the establishment’s name, he was convinced it had to be a cleverly disguised still.

Peter hoping nothing falls on him

The burgers are outstanding, the beer cold and the patrons interesting.  What more do you want from a midday stop?  Check it out.
