Yellow Foam Beetle
by Richard McGary a.k.a. Hooked

Materials

Hook: 14 Tiemco TMC 101

Underbody: Nylon Floss

Shell back: Yellow Craft Foam

Tail: Natural Squirrel Tail

Legs: Tan Round Rubber Legs

Tying Instructions

This is a simple and fun fly to tie. First, snip a bit of natural squirrel tail about the length of the hook shank and tie in at the bend of the hook with the nylon floss. Cut a strip of yellow craft foam roughly 5/8” long and 1/4” wide. Cut end to form a V 1/8” from the end. Tie in end of V. Cut a length of rubber legs 1-1/2”. Place behind floss as it is hanging down from vice. Fold in half over floss, holding the ends. Wrap the floss over the hook tying down the legs in a V. Build up an underbody by wrapping the floss onto the hook shank. Cut two 3/4” lengths of rubber legs. Approximately 1/8” from the hook eye tie in on each side. Put Zap-a-Gap on the top of the underbody, fold the craft foam over the top of the underbody and tie down at the point of the rubber legs on the side. The Zap-A-Gap has a chemical reaction with the foam and nylon forming a really good bond. Just make sure you don’t glue your fingers together. J Trim the head at angle on both sides. Place eyes on each side by using a permanent black marker.

How to Fish

This is a very simple fly to fish. It is deadly on gills and sunfish. Be wary, you might also get a bass or two on it, as well. Cast it up into weeds, hydrilla, etc. and let it sit. Twitch it and let it sit. If no action, retrieve and cast again.
