Materials

Hook – I prefer the swimming numph hooks, but any long shank or 2X will work in sizes from 14 to 8.

5 strands Peacock Herl

1/8” craft foam (black)

Crystal Flash

Rubber legs

Doll eyes

Tying Instructions

I under wrap on the hook back to the bend. I then tie in four or five strands of peacock herl. I them tie in a piece of craft foam (1/8” black, I get mine at Hobby Lobby in big sheets) about ¼” wide or so. I then wrap the thread almost to the eye. Wrap the peacock herl almost to the eye and anchor. Take the foam and cut a small V about 1/16” from the end. Now fold the foam forward on the hook and wrap around the V you have made to anchor it. Take eight or ten strands of Crystal Flash and wrap onto the back of the fly at the V. Take two or three rubber legs and tie in at the V also. A drop of super glue on the V area and fold the area in front of the V back until it holds there. (The super glue also holds the thread without finishing it) Then I take a small piece of foam, make a wedge head and glue on. It started as a laugh, but I then add what my wife calls “googly eyes.” All done.

How to Fish

I came across this fly this summer in Fly Fisherman Magazine. Thought it looked peculiar as it really doesn’t imitate anything perfectly, but close to a lot of things. Haven’t “trouted” with it yet, but in warm water, the bluegills and bass seem to like it.

I fish it a few different ways. You can fish it like a popper, with a cast and some occasional movements. You can skate it like a beetle by stripping and moving the rod tip slightly. I also got weird with it one afternoon and fished it suspended using a sink tip and the bluegills hit it hard.

It is a really easy fly to tie and as you can probably see, I am far from an accomplished tyer.
