RS2 Quill
by Tom Higgins a.k.a. Tom/TX

Materials

HOOK: Tiemco 100 or 101 or equivalent dry fly hook, #16-#22 (This is a #20)

THREAD: Olive, 6/0 or 8/0, according to hook size.

TAIL (SHUCK): Barred mallard flank feather, dyed lemon

ABDOMEN: Quill (stripped neck hackle stem), dyed blue winged olive color

THORAX: Gray rabbit dubbing

WING: Gray poly yarn

Tying Instructions

Start thread and wind back to end of hook shank. Tie in 5 or 6 fibers of mallard flank for tail, same length as hook shank or a little longer. Wrap forward to 2 eye lengths from eye, covering feather fibers as you go to form underbody, trim excess mallard. Tie in quill, starting about a hook gape from hook eye and wrap back to tail, wrapping forward to end of quill. Wrap quill forward in snug wraps to thread, tie off, and trim excess quill. Tie in poly yarn and n=snug it up against the “shoulder” left by the quill. That cocks it up at an angle so it doesn’t lie flat against the body. Trim to length, about 1-1/2 hook eye lengths. Dub in front of wing with gray rabbit to form a thorax. Whip finish a small neat head. Add head cement, if desired. Optional: Cover thread underbody with head cement and/or cover finished quill with head cement for durability.

How to Fish

I stole this from an A.K. Best video. This color combo is a great BWO nymph/emerger, but it can be tied with different color thread, shuck, quill, and/or dubbing to match local bugs. I fish it from bottom to top, as a nymph down deep with split shot, as an emerger just below the surface with mini-shot if needed, and in the film with floatant. It has caught trout for me on the San Juan and Cimarron Rivers in New Mexico and the Guadalupe River in Texas. I hope it catches a fish or two on your home waters.
