Materials

Hook: Size 4-8 TMC 4999

Thread: Black 6/0

Tail: None

Body: Purple Diamond Braid or similar, coat w/ head cement or clear nail polish

Wing: Purple Squirrel or Bucktail

Hackle: Purple Saddle Hackle, collared

Head: Black Thread, head cement

Tying Instructions

1. Start thread behind eye wire end, and wrap to bend, tie in lead wire at hook point and wrap forward to eye wire end, wrap thread over lead to hold in place.

2. Tie in Diamond Braid at hook bend and wrap forward to just behind eye wire end, take care to keep braid as flat as possible.

3. Coat Diamond Braid with clear nail polish, I use two coats, set aside to dry.

4. Reattach thread, and set wing material at front edge of body, make wing fairly sparse.

5. Tie in saddle hackle at mid point of feather, collar forward 3-4 wraps and tie down.

6. Fashion thread head with a couple of wraps back into the collared hackle to set the front of the feather at a backward slope. Head should be fairly small.

How to Fish

I normally fish this fly across and down, with a couple of short strips mid way through the drift. I try not to add split shot above the fly, instead will use a sink tip or Teeny 300 if the water is extremely fast or deep.

The original pattern was developed by Pudge Kleinkauf of the Alaska Fly Fishers, for big Rainbows and Salmon in Alaska. I use this mainly on the St. Joe river in southwestern Mi. and northern In. with great success for Steelhead. I have used it on the PM and Manistee rivers with success when the water is off color.
