Orange Hotbead Egg Sucking Leech
by Zach Matthews

Materials

Hook: #4-12 Aberdeen

Thread: Green 6/0 Uni

Hackle: Grizzly Saddle

Body: Non variegated dark green chenille

Hotbead: Orange

Tail: Gray marabou

Tying Instructions

This is your standard wooly bugger. Thread the bead, then start the thread and wrap back down the hook.

Cut off a bit of marabou and tie it in for the tail.

Tie the grizzly hackle you will palmer on, tip first.

Tie on the chenille

Wrap the shank in .20 lead wire

Wrap the chenille forward.

Now palmer the hackle over the chenille. It should flare.

Whip finish, you're done.

How to Fish

"Leech" is often a euphemism for wooly bugger, and it certainly is here. As with all woolies, this pattern is best fished on smooth water in erratic, random strips. Takes can be sudden or soft. Woolies are very effective in almost all water, and orange on any fly is particularly effective in the fall.

This and your standard olive wooly have become the only ones I carry. Don't skimp on the beads, they need to be metal. The jigging action is one of the main attractions. If you need to fish this skinny, just leave off the lead wire.
