Articulated Rabbit
by Bob Riggins aka Dunfly

Actually, I don’t know what it is. I started out to tie an articulated leach, but couldn’t find black rabbit strips. Then I decided to tie a saltwater baitfish fly on the same principle and found cross cut chinchilla strips. So here it is.

Materials

Hooks: 2 - #1 Mustad 3407 of equivalent.

Thread: White

Joint: Coated Braided Wire Leader - 20 #

Tail: White Marabou

Body: Narrow Cross Cut Chinchilla Strips
Accent: Pearl Flashabou

Gills: Red Marabou

Eyes: Nickle Dumbell Eyes

Head Finish: Pearl Nail Polish, Clear Hard as Nails.

Tying Instructions

Rear Hook:
1. Start wrapping thread on hook at eye and for base to bend in hook.
2. Tie in clump of white marabou at bend of hook, extending about 1" to the rear
3. Tie is a strip of crosscut chinchilla at the bend of the hook, with a small strip extending back with the tail. Wrap thread back to the eye.
4. Palmer the chinchilla strip around the hook working toward the eye. Make sure the fur points toward the rear.
5. Tie of end of chinchilla strip at eye. Tie in flashabou accent on each side of the fly. Whip finish and apply small amount of Hard as Nails.

Front Hook:
1. Start wrapping thread on hook at eye and for base to bend in hook.
2. Tie in one end of braided wire along the top of the hook with tag end extending to the rear about 1 inch. Superglue under wire along hook. Pass tag end of braided wire through eye of rear hook with both hooks pointing down. Tie in tag end of braided wire on top of other end of wire forming a tight loop at the eye of the rear hook. Superglue down and wrap thread to eye.
3. Tie on dumbell eyes on bottom of hook about 1/4" back from eye. (Note: This is on the opposite side as a clouser is tied. I didn’t want it to ride hook up.) Wrap thread back to bend of hook.
4. Tie is small clumps of marabou on each side of fly, flowing back along sides of rear fly.
3. Tie is a strip of crosscut chinchilla at the bend of the hook, with a small strip extending back over the rear fly. Wrap thread back to the rear of dumbell eyes.
4. Palmer the chinchilla strip around the hook working toward the rear of the dumbell eyes. Make sure the fur points toward the rear. Tie off.
5. Tie in flashabou accent on each side of the fly. Tie in a small clump of red marabou on each side of fly forming gills.
6. Build up head with thread, whip finish.
7. Coat head with pearl nail polish. Finish coat with clear Hard as Nails.
8. Cut off the point of the hook, just past the bend.

How to Fish

The fly makes a bulky baitfish fly in the water but is steamlined when cast. The front weighted fly and hinge give the fly good action. The fly tend to dive toward the bottom between strips. I used a wire loop to tie on the rear fly because I thought is would be a good shark fly. 25 # mono would also work. Do not use fluorocarbon since its hard finish may not hold as well, causing it to slip out.
