Tying Instructions
Tie down, tips forward, a small bunch
of bucktail @ the head of the hook (bucktail should be at least 2x
the length of hook). Tie on the bead chain eyes over the bucktail
and coat w/ nail polish. Wrap thread back to the beginning of the
hook bend and form a dubbing loop, wrap thread to eye, insert dubbing
into loop, twist loop til it 'splays' the dubbing, dub forward to
eye and tie off. Pull 90% of the bucktail back over the hook and tie
down in 'segments'. Tie back up the shank over first ties, wrap a
small head and coat head and bucktail "shell" with nail
Polish.
How to Fish
My
only 'original' pattern, aptly dubbed 'Ugly' by my 4 year old daughter
when I aksed if she thought it looked like a small shrimp. This pattern
changes every time I tie it, 'sparse and scraggly' seems to work the
best, though. Feel free to omit the antennae, as the fish don't seem
to care (only the anglers seem to!) I fish this fly for stripers in
outflowing estuaries and it works wonders. A pair of these flies in
two different colors (one on a dropper) accounted for a beautiful
morning of fishing that consisted of 3 'double' catches of schoolies.
