by Barry Ekstrand a.k.a. Barry/TX

Materials

Hook: Dry Fly Hook 10 – 16

Thread: Black 6/0

Body: Peacock herl over thread base

Hackle: Dark dry fly hackle (16) over peacock herl

Shellback: 0.5 mm Black Craft Foam

Tying Instructions

Lay down a base of thread on the hook, move the thread to the back of the hook. Tie in the foam strip, hackle and 1-2 strands of peacock herl. Move the thread up to the front of the hook. Leave enough room to tie a thread head later. Wrap the peacock herl forward to form the underbody and tie off. Palmer the hackle forward over the herl and tie off. Lay a bead of cement on the inside of the foam, then fold it over the underbody and tie off. Tie a thread head just behind the hook eye, whip finish, and add a drop of Zap-A-Gap to seal the head.

How to Fish

This pattern is meant to be a beetle that fell in the water along streamside. Use floatant to assist buoyancy, cast along the bank under overhanging branches and near grassy areas that meet streamside.
