What is ADHD?

ADHD stands for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. People with ADHD often have a hard time focusing and maintaining attention, remembering, managing frustrations, organizing, and inhibiting certain behaviors. Frequently such individuals underachieve in school or on the job and are susceptible to develop depressive and anxiety conditions. Not every person who has ADHD is hyperactive. Some have more trouble paying attention and staying organized. Most researchers believe that ADHD is hereditary and is caused by neurotransmitter deficits.

How Do We Treat It?

The first step in treatment is proper diagnosis. Our evaluation will involve an extensive clinical interview, review of records, rating scales and direct testing. Our tests will assess intelligence (capacity to learn), memory, ability to attend, basic achievement, and depression as well as anxiety.

We will incorporate our results into a professional report and will be available for coordination of services with the school, job, or physician.

If counseling services are warranted, we can help. Many individuals with ADHD feel badly about themselves. They may have trouble finding and keeping friends, as well a interacting positively with family members. Often help is needed in developing effective problem solving and decision making strategies, positively processing feelings (especially anger), and choosing the correct behaviors for the situation. Biofeedback as  well as hypnosis is helpful in quieting excessively "noisy" minds, promoting constructive attention/concentration, and minimizing impulsivity.
