| Possesive Aggression: |
| Famillies deeling with dogs with possesive aggression are in a very stressful situation. The dog may bark, growl, snarl, bite (ect.) if someone or another dog, or pet comes neer the dog's food, toy, person ect. Possesive aggression comes from a instinct. In a pack, a wolf/dog will have to protect it's food, in order to eat, protect itself, in order to live. And so on. This type of aggression, is usually shown in abandoned or stray dogs, who have experienced the harshness of the world, and react by protecting themselves and there possesions. I have found that with Hazel, when ever she growled (she doesn't anymore) or snapped when I tried to take her toy away, it worked if I just simply, took the toy away. If she saw me put the toy on the dresser, then she knew I had it then. So then I would give her something of mine to playwith (such as an old towel). As soon as I would go to take the toy away again, and she snapped, I didn't let her have it again. Later I would giver her HER toy back, then play for a while, then take it away again. If she snapped, I put it up, if she didn't I praised her and kept on playing. Later I would put her toy away, then try playing with something of mine. I called this the "Sharing Method", to teach Hazel, that if she shares with me, I will share with her. |
