Title: Addition, Multiplication,
Subtraction, Division Lesson
Number and Title: Lesson 2, the basis
of Multiplication
Context
§
With
the understanding of addition, students should be able to understand multiplication
and how it works.
§
Know
that addition is adding multiple things together and multiplication is the same
thing but in a different way.
§
If
students did not grasp addition, they may not understand multiplication.
Objectives
§
With
understanding addition and multiplication, students should be able to add many
groups of the same number together.
Connections
1.
MA-EP-1.3.1
Students
will analyze real-world problems to identify appropriate representations using
mathematical operations, and will apply operations to solve real-world problems
with the following constraints:
v
add and subtract whole numbers with three
digits or less;
v
multiply whole numbers of 10 or less;
v
add and subtract fractions with like
denominators less than or equal to four and
v
add and subtract decimals related to money.
Students will develop an understanding of the
concepts of addition and subtraction using physical objects and concrete
materials.
Resources, media, and
technology
§
Students
will use their textbooks, reading and doing problems from the multiplication
section. They will also do multiplication worksheets
§
Students
will view a Virtual Field Trip and watch an excerpt from School House Rock.
Procedures
§
While
viewing the VFT, students will get a grasp on multiplication. The VFT looks at
addition, multiplication, subtraction, and division. It relates addition and
multiplication and subtraction and division. The School House Rock video
will help the students see the multiplication in action.
Assessment Plan
§
At
the end of each day, students will have a quiz that relates to each area of
math they learned and how well they know it. On the last day, the students will
view the VFT and take a quiz. On Friday, the students will complete a math
project. The students will create a word problem that uses two of the following
operations: addition, multiplication, subtraction, and division. They will show
their work of how they solved the problem. They will also be working in groups
and all need to cooperate.
