Duckling Page continued...
Water still..
I Don't recomend giving your babies a bath a lot until they are older, but ducklings do love to swim, and it is quite good for them too. So if you really must give them a chance to swim about, then fill up a sink full of shallow WARM water and let them have a go.
Ducklings naturally know how to swim, but never leave them unguarded as they can easily tire and could drown. When your ducklings are done having a swim about make sure you have a warm dry towel (Perhaps even a hair dryer, on a cool setting) waiting to meet them. Don't put your duckling back in it's box only half-dry, this can be deadly. Always make sure that you dry off your duckling completly, it should look all fluffy and soft like before you put it into the water, I can't stress enough how bad a damp duckling can be.
Be careful aswell to the positioning of your light, or heat lamp. Sometimes if water, splatterd from your duckling(s) messy drinking hit's the globe it can cause it to blow, sometimes littering your duckling's home with glass. I found I had to keep wiremesh over the top of my duckling's box in order to stop him escaping. This proved useful. By placing my heap lamp ontop (it had long sides, the bare globe wasn't touching the wire) it was close enough to my duckling's "sleeping area" to keep him warm, yet high enough so stray droplets didn't affect it.

Food
Now your duckling's aren't thirsty anymore, it's time to feed them. To start off with you will need to buy some "starter food" for waterfowl. "Waterfowl starter" is the ideal food for your ducklings. However Poultry starter, as long as you're sure it's not medicated and if you can, has a lower protien content will do fine too. Be sure to make sure your not buying any medicated chick food as it also can kill ducklings. Some Poultry starters also contain a high protien content which can cause wing deformaties in ducklings. Don't feel your ducks must have specifically "Duck food", although Waterfoul starter is the ideal, Game bird starter can be substituted succesfully.
You will be able to buy waterfowl starter food from an animal food supplyer store or wearhouse, If your not sure on what to buy, take a duck breeder's advice, because although the people in the store will tell you what they know out of their knowlage, it's best to get a fellow-ducky person's advice. Also ask this ducky person what the best time would be to switch onto "Grower waterfowl food" as it can sometime vary. Under the "food" section of my page is a homemade recipe for ducklings, although it's probably cheaper to just buy a large bag of Starter and grower. Remember to place the food not too far away from the water source as ducklings need to eat, then go rinse out their noses before taking another nibble. but also be careful to replace wet feed immediatly, wet feed causes Chest infections which are big killer's in ducklings.
