Kagome

Higurashi Kagome
Species:Human

Age: 15

Hair: black

Eyes: grey-blue in the manga, brown in the anime.

Appearance: Kagome is lively, petite and cute, and shows her emotions readily. She is most commonly seen wearing her school uniform, a white shirt with a green and white striped collar and a red bow, baggy white socks and a short short green skirt. When she goes home, however, she frequently wears a variety of rather pretty clothes.

Appellations: Kagome, Kagome-sama, Kagome-chan, neechan, Kagome-neesan, Higurashi

Meaning of Name: In the series, Kagome's name is written with hiragana. As far as I understand, "kagome" is a type of bamboo weave, but there is also a Japanese children's song called "Kagome-Kagome", in which context the word is kind of untranslatable. "Higurashi" gives an approximate meaning of "sunset", "nightfall".

Family: grandpa, mother, little brother named Sota

Love: Inuyasha

Hate: Naraku

Weakness: too nice and forgiving

Quote: "Someone the exact opposite of Inuyasha. That's the perfect guy for me."

Name Analysis: The name of Kagome has given you an appreciation for many beautiful and refined aspects of life--music and art, literature, drama--and the outdoors, where you find much peace and relaxation, but it creates a far too sensitive nature. You sense and feel much that you do not understand, and sometimes you are alarmed at your thoughts and wonder about their origin. You rarely experience the tranquility that comes with stability of thinking or emotional control.

Impressions: Despite a rather bratty initial attitude, Kagome is spirited, brave, kind and gentle. She goes out of her way to help people, believes that there is good in everyone, encourages everyone and forgives and forgets rather than holding a grudge. She is quick to anger but also swiftly calmed. She has had a major influence in peeling Inuyasha from his tough-guy-I-don't-need-anyone attitude. She sees it as her responsibility to help gather the scattered Shikon shards, even abandoning her studies in order to quest in the feudal era. The one thing that seems to seriously piss her off is when people evaluate her on basis that she is the supposed reincarnation of Kikyou.

History (spoilers!): Kagome lives at the Higurashi Shrine (or Sunset Shrine), a Shinto shrine that has been in the care of her family for a very long time, probably for centuries. She has a quite eccentric grandfather who is the resident priest of the shrine, a loving, understanding mother and a little brother, Souta. The series tells us nothing about her father. But although Kagome grew up swathed in mythology and religion, she never took them entirely seriously until the day that she was attacked by a strange centipede monster and fell through an old well on her family property -- and discovered herself five centuries in the past, in the Warring States era of Japan. There she met Inuyasha and Kaede, the elderly current priestess of Kikyou's village and Kikyou's little sister. The Shikon no Tama emerged from a gash in her body, and Kaede took this as a sign, in addition to Kagome's striking resemblance to Kikyou, that Kagome is the reincarnation of her older sister. Kagome accidentally shattered the Shikon no Tama, however, and has now embarked on a quest to retrieve the fragments...

Weapons & Attacks: Kagome wields the traditional weapons of a miko, a bow and arrows, with increasing certainty. Whereas she was mostly missing things early on, her marksmanship develops all the time. However, she has no experience at hand-to-hand, and relies on her companions for protection on those occasions. Probably due to her connection with Kikyou she has strong spiritual abilities. She can, for examply, purify corrupted Shikon shards and has used her powers to neutralise a magical poison on one occasion. She also has a bigger than normal soul, it seems, and she has resisted numerous attempts to steal or corrupt her soul.

Hama no Ya ("Arrow of Purity"): Kagome is able to imbue her arrows with spiritual energy so that they disrupt and break youki in their path, and are also able to pierce kekkai (magical barriers).

Things of Note: What makes Kagome a very extraordinary Japanese schoolgirl indeed is the fact that she has significant spiritual abilities (reiryoku). She can read and detect youki and sense the presence of evil. She has the ability to detect whenever Shikon fragments are in the vicinity. She can also withstand jaki (evil auras) and intense youki much better than normal humans. It is probable that she is not yet in full command of her abilities, but if she someday will be, she will be an awesome miko indeed. Kagome has the power to subdue Inuyasha with a single word -- "Sit!" ("Osuwari!") -- due to an enchanted rosary Kaede put around his neck.

Love Life: Kagome seems to be a very one-half-demon girl. She falls in love with Inuyasha and remains loyal to him. Kouga, the young prince of the wolf demons, has proclaimed that Kagome is his woman, but Kagome treats "Kouga-kun" merely as an acquiantance and ally, unless she wants to cause Inuyasha some anxiety. There is also Houjou from class B, a rather nave boy-next-door, who is infatuated with Kagome. They had a date once, but Kagome cut it short because she was worried for Inuyasha...
