EXPRESSIONS USING TENER

The following is a list of expressions that use tener.

When you translate from English to Spanish, it may not always be exact.

English: I am hungry.

Spanish: I have hunger-Yo tengo hambre

 
  1. Possession-having something

    2. Ejemplos:

    Yo tengo un libro-I have a book

    Tú tienes un perro-You(fam) have a dog.

  2. Age-telling your age

    3. Ejemplo:

    Yo tengo 18 años.-I am 18 years old.

    Tú tienes 55 años.-You (fam) are 55 years old.

     

  3. Hunger-to be hungry

    4. Ejemplo: Yo tengo hambre.-I am hungry.

    Tú tienes hambre-You(fam) are hungry .

     

  4. Thirsty-to be thirsty

    5. Ejemplo: Yo tengo sed.-I am thirsty

    Tú tienes sed-You(fam) are thirsty.

     

  5. Correct-to be correct or right

    6. Ejemplo: Yo tengo razón.-I am right/correct.

    Tú tienes razón-You(fam)are correct.

     

  6. To have to do something

Ejemplo: Yo tengo que ir a la escuela.

-I have to go to school.

Tener(conjugated) + que + verb(infinitive)

Yo tengo + que + ir (I have to go/I must go)

Tú tienes + que + cantar (You(fam) have to sing)

 

  1. Expressing fear

Ejemplo: Yo tengo miedo.-I am afraid.
