Summaries of Episodes 1 - 159 (the black and white episodes)

I composed these summaries thanks to the many, many hours of watching "The Andy Griffith Show" over the years. I hope that this page will help you to remember forgotten episodes and some of your favorites as well.

  • 1. "The New Housekeeper" The one that started it all! Rose is leaving and Aunt Bee decides to move in with Andy and Opie to take care of them. However, Opie doesn't think this is the best idea and tries his best to sabotage it.
  • 2. "The Manhunt"An escaped convict runs to Mayberry and the state police don't think they need the help of Andy and Barney, until, well, you'll see...
  • 3. "The Guitar Player"A local guitar player (Jim Lindsay, a.k.a. Roscoe P. Coletrane from "Dukes of Hazzard" fame) doesn't realise how good he is until Bobby Fleet and His Band with a Beat hears him play (not by choice however).
  • 4. "Runaway Kid"Opie promises a runaway kid that he won't tell on him even when Andy questions him about it. This is a good father-son episode.
  • 5. "Opie's Charity"Andy is upset with Opie for not donating enough money to a charity until he finds out that he is saving the money to buy a gift for a girl in his class. Good moral story in this one.
  • 6. "Ellie Comes to Town"The new pharmacist, Ellie Walker, has the whole town against her when she won't give any medicine to the "sickly" Emma Watson. This is the first episode with Ellie Walker.
  • 7. "Irresistible Andy"Andy thinks that Ellie is trying to get him to marry her, much to Ellie's surprise.
  • 8. "A Feud Is a Feud"A feud between two farming families must be settled by Andy so that two of their children can get married.
  • 9. "Andy the Matchmaker"Andy stages a fake robbery to boost Barney's morale as an officer and so he can date Miss Rosemary. Good Barney episode...
  • 10. "Stranger in Town"A new man in town seems to know everything about everbody and has everybody on edge. This is the first episode for Floyd, but he is played by Walter Baldwin, not Howard McNear.
  • 11. "The Christmas Story"Ben Weaver shows his Scrooge spirit by insisting that Andy lock up a man on Christmas Eve. Another good moral story in this one.
  • 12. "Ellie for Council"Ellie has all the men in town in an uproar by running for a spot on the town council.
  • 13. "Mayberry Goes Hollywood"A Hollywood movie producer falls in love with Mayberry and wants to do a movie there until the town gets bitten by the movie bug.
  • 14. "The Horse Trader"While Andy tries to get rid of the town's old cannon by telling some tall tales, he learns a great lesson from Opie. Good moral story...
  • 15. "Those Gossipin' Men"Some of the men in town mistake a traveling show salesman for a talent scout from Hollywood and try hard to impress him only to be embarrassed in the end.
  • 16. "Andy Saves Barney's Morale"Barney arrests nearly everyone in town while Andy is gone, however, no one wants to take him seriously. Poor Barney, he tries so hard...
  • 17. "Alcohol and Old Lace"While Andy and Barney search for local moonshiners, they have no idea that two little old ladies are the main culprits (and their flower-makin' machine).
  • 18. "Andy the Marriage Counselor"Andy plays marraige counselor to a fighting couple who just can't seem to get along (except when they don't get along).
  • 19. "Mayberry on Record"A record producer records some of the Mayberry talent while the people invest in it, in spite of Andy's warnings.
  • 20. "The Beauty Contest"Mayberry holds a beauty contest and Andy finds himself in a tight spot as the contest's judge and Ellie's friend.
  • 21. "Andy and the Gentleman Crook"A high society crook sweet talks his way into Andy's house, but Andy always suspects that he isn't all he says he is.
  • 22. "Cyrano Andy"Barney is afraid to reveal his feelings to Thelma Lou until he becomes jealous after Thelma pretends to like Andy. Great Barney episode! This is the first episode for Thelma Lou.
  • 23. "Andy and Opie, Housekeepers"While Aunt Bee is gone Andy and Opie must fend for themselves until a neighbor cleans up and makes Aunt Bee feel unnecessary to Andy and Opie.
  • 24. "The New Doctor"Andy is suspicious that Ellie and a new doctor in town are planning to marry...until Ellie really sets him straight!
  • 25. "A Plaque for Mayberry"A plaque has been made for the Mayberry resident who is a descendent of a Revolutionary War hero. Everyone is surprised to find out who the descendant is.
  • 26. "The Inspector"The Mayberry law is being inspected by a state official who is apalled by Andy's out-of-date techniques.
  • 27. "Ellie Saves a Female"A local farmer gets angry when Ellie tries to turn his tomboy daughter into a beautiful girl until he sees the ultimate results.
  • 28. "Andy Forecloses"Ben Weaver shows his mean side again by demanding that Andy evict a family from one of his houses leaving Andy in a bad spot. Good moral story.
  • 29. "Quiet Sam"When Barney begins watching a quiet farmer from the edge of town he suspects that he may be up to no good. Barney likes to jump to conclusions you know...
  • 30. "Barney Gets His Man"After Barney accidentally captures a criminal, he becomes worried after the man breaks free and vowed revenge on Barney.
  • 31. "The Guitar Player Returns"Jim Lindsay and his guitar talents return to Mayberry sounding like a big celebrity until Andy finds out the real truth about his success. This episode is the last one with Ellie Walker.
  • 32. "Bringing Up Opie"Opie is banned from the courthouse according to Aunt Bee's wishes but only finds himself in more trying situations.
  • 33. "Barney's Replacement"Barney is worried about his job after a lawyer doing an intern in the Mayberry jail does a good job playing by the book.
  • 34. "Opie and the Bully"Opie must face up to a school bully while Andy fights with emotions over the situation. This one is a tearjerker for you dads out there.
  • 35. "Andy and the Woman Speeder"The charm of a lady speeder turns some people against Andy that he thought would never turn against him. Fortunately she isn't all bad.
  • 36. "Barney on the Rebound"Barney falls for a new girl in town and finds himself in the middle of a breech-of-promise suit (and in hot water with Thelma Lou)!
  • 37. "The Perfect Female"Andy wants to find out everything he can about Thelma Lou's cousin before dating her. However, Andy finds out more about her than he expected to.
  • 38. "Aunt Bee's Brief Encounter"A handyman sweet talks Aunt Bee into letting him stay at the Taylor house for a while, but he isn't as sweet as he seems to be.
  • 39. "Mayberry Goes Bankrupt"When the town council tries to evict an old man from an unkept house, they find out that the man had inherited a town bond and they actually owe him hundreds of thousands of dollars.
  • 40. "Opie's Hobo Friend"Andy becomes dismayed when Opie becomes friends with a hobo and begins to act like him. Opie learns one of life's lessons on people.
  • 41. "Crime-free Mayberry"A bank robber poses as an FBI agent congratulating Andy and Barney on their low crime rate. Meanwhile he is planning a big bank heist right under their noses.
  • 42. "The Clubmen"Barney is excited when he and Andy are invited to an upper class men's club, but only one of them is given the invitation to join the club.
  • 43. "The Pickle Story"Andy, Barney, and Opie show several sour faces when Aunt Bee decides to make her homemade "kerosene cucumbers" for the boys and the fair. One of the most popular episodes!
  • 44. "Sheriff Barney"The town of Greendale offers Barney the position of sheriff, so Andy lets Barney get a taste of sheriffing for a day there in Mayberry. Classic Barney humor in this one!
  • 45. "The Farmer Takes a Wife"Barney becomes enraged when a farmer is looking for a wife and chooses Thelma Lou. The farmer is played by Alan Hale, Jr. (later the skipper on "Gilligan's Island").
  • 46. "The Keeper of the Flame"Opie and his friends start a secret club that meets in a man's barn. When the man accidentally burns his own barn down he blames Opie and his friends.
  • 47. "Bailey's Bad Boy"A young man, who is the son of a rich and famous lawyer, is locked up by Andy. Meanwhile the man threatens to ruin Andy as the sheriff. The young man is played by Bill Bixby. Another good moral story in this one.
  • 48. "The Manicurist"Barbara Eden (from "I Dream of Jeanie" fame) guest stars as a beautiful manicurist who works out of Floyd's Barber Shop. Although the men are enjoying her work, the women in town become rather upset with how their husbands are looking at her.
  • 49. "The Jinx"A local man is accused by everybody of being a terrible jinx and begins to believe it himself. However Andy tries to prove it otherwise without much luck.
  • 50. "Jailbreak"Barney fails to keep a man in jail and he and Andy must not only look for the escaped criminal but his partner as well.
  • 51. "A Medal for Opie"Opie loses a race that he expected to win and doesn't take it too well. Therefore, Andy must teach him the ways of life on winning and losing. Good moral story.
  • 52. "Barney and the Choir"The choir is missing their first tenor and Barney volunteers to fill the position much to the dismay of everyone. Great Barney episode!
  • 53. "Guest of Honor"A man who is just passing through town is honored and given the key to the city. However, Andy finds out the man is really a first-class pickpocket.
  • 54. "The Merchant of Mayberry"Once again Ben Weaver gets angry at Andy and Barney. This time for their helping a traveling salesman to set up a shop in Mayberry taking away from Ben's business.
  • 55. "Aunt Bee the Warden"When Otis comes into the jail for his drunken stay the jail is full and he must stay at the Taylor's house. Aunt Bee then becomes a warden and puts Otis to work.
  • 56. "The County Nurse"A pretty nurse is giving tetanus shots to the local farmers but needs Andy's help when the stubborn Rafe Hollister refuses to get his shot.
  • 57. "Andy and Barney in the Big City"Barney and Andy visit Raleigh where Barney stumbles onto a jewel thief and helps to nab him.
  • 58. "Wedding Bells for Aunt BeeClara Edwards convinces Aunt Bee that she needs to be married so that Andy can then be married. Therefore, she allows the town's not-so-clean laundryman to court her.
  • 59. "Three's a Crowd"When Andy and the county's nurse try to spend some time together, Barney always seems to get in the way.
  • 60. "The Bookie Barber"A big town barber wants to set up a second chair in Floyd's shop much to the happiness of Floyd. However, the barber is really a bookie. Great Floyd episode!
  • 61. "Andy on Trial"A magazine is out to blemish Andy's perfect reputation and Barney unknowingly helps. Then they try to use Barney against Andy in a public hearing except that Barney wants to tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth.
  • 62. "Cousin Virgil"Barney's cousin Virgil is visiting and shows his ability to fail at everything he tries until Andy notices one talent where Virgil excels.
  • 63. "Deputy Otis"When Otis finds out that his brother is coming to visit he worries that his brother will find out that he is the town drunk and not a deputy like he told them. So Andy helps him out by temporarily deputizing Otis until his brother leaves.
  • 64. "Opie's Rival"Andy grows fond of a nurse and begins to date her. Meanwhile, Opie becomes jealous and thinks he should try to break them up.
  • 65. "Andy and Opie-Bachelors"While Aunt Bee is away Andy's friend Peggy comes by to cook and clean causing Andy to believe that she is thinking of marraige. Of course this leads Andy to trying to stay away from her.
  • 66. "Mr. McBeevee"Opie describes his new friend in an unbelievable way that causes Andy to think Opie is using an imaginary friend to get things. However, Andy's fatherly love takes over and he believes in Opie. Another tearjerker for you dads.
  • 67. "Andy's Rich Girlfriend"Andy begins to think that he and girlfriend Peggy can't happily be together because of her high-class upbringing clashing with his simple life. This is the only episode where I remember Andy drinking alcohol.
  • 68. "Barney Mends a Broken Heart"After Peggy and Andy have a fight Barney tries to help Andy get over her but only makes things worse when he brings the "fun girls" down from Mt. Pilot.
  • 69. "Andy and the New Mayor"There's a new mayor in town and doesn't like the way Andy is doing things so he is watching the sheriff's office with a close eye.
  • 70. "The Cow Thief"When several cattle are missing around town the mayor calls in a special detective to solve the case because he feels Andy and Barney can't handle it. However, Andy shows that he is a good detective too. Good episode between Andy and Barney.
  • 71. "Floyd, the Gay Deceiver"Floyd has been lying to his penpal and now she is coming to visit. So Andy helps Floyd appear to be a rich widower making Floyd a nervous wreck ("miserable, deceitful wretch").
  • 72. "The Mayberry Band"The Mayberry Band wants to go to Raleigh to play but the mayor does not want them to do it. So when Bobby Fleet and His Band with a Beat returns for a visit Andy gets a great idea.
  • 73. "Lawman Barney"Two big farmers are selling vegetables illegally outside of town and Barney must be the one to make them move. However, they aren't exactly willing to listen to him and Barney must find the courage to stand up to them. Great episode for Barney as a lawman.
  • 74. "Convicts-at-Large"When Floyd and Barney are heading to the mountains for a fishing trip they are kidnapped and held hostage by three escaped women convicts. Floyd is great in this one! Also, notice that one of the convicts is played by the same woman who played one of the fun girls.
  • 75. "The Bed Jacket"Aunt Bee is hoping for a bed jacket for her birthday and the only way Andy can get it is to get rid of his favorite lucky fishing pole.
  • 76. "Barney and the Governor"When the governor's car is parked illegally in Mayberry, Barney gives him a ticket. The governor decides then to pay Barney a personal visit leading to some funny scenes where Otis tries to ruin things with his spiked water.
  • 77. "Man in a Hurry"When a big businessman's car breaks down outside of town on a Sunday he becomes extremely frustrated that he can't find anyone to work on his car immediately. Many people agree that this episode best describes Mayberry and The Andy Griffith Show.
  • 78. "The Bank Job"Barney wants to show everyone how lacking the bank security is (in the event of a 10-12) and nearly gets himself in some big trouble. Then come the real bank robbers...!
  • 79. "One-Punch Opie"The new kid in town is causing trouble and Opie and his friends are following him. However, when the boys get in trouble Opie decides it's time that somebody stands up to him...and Opie's just the one to do it!
  • 80. "High Noon in Mayberry"Andy hears that a man he helped put in prison is out and is coming to Mayberry to give him something. Andy then becomes worried about what the man might be planning to give to him.
  • 81. "The Loaded Goat"A local farmer's goat eats some dynamite from the road construction crew. Andy and Barney then must find the goat and keep him in a safe place so as not to excite him.
  • 82. "Class Reunion"When Andy and Barney organize a class reunion with their high school classmates, Andy begins thinking about his high school girlfriend and whether or not she will attend.
  • 83. "Rafe Hollister Sings"Local farmboy Rafe Hollister surprises everybody when he shows how well he can sing and represents Mayberry in front of a high-society group. Good moral story.
  • 84. "Opie and the Spoiled Kid"There is a new kid in town and he tells Opie how he gets whatever he wants. Opie then tries the kid's bratty techniques on Andy to no avail. Then Andy must deal with the kid's father and Opie in a good "father and son scene".
  • 85. "The Great Filling Station Robbery"Andy's detective skills are put to the test in this episode where things are being stolen from Wally's filling station. Everyone suspects the new guy Wally hired...everyone except Andy that is.
  • 86. "Andy Discovers America"With the first appearance of Helen Crump, Andy doesn't exactly get off on the right foot with her. Andy knocks on her teaching of history in front of Opie and his friends and she becomes quite enraged! We all know how it works out though.
  • 87. "Aunt Bee's Medicine Man"A traveling salesman sells some of his special elixer to Aunt Bee and some of her friends. However they didn't realize that the elixer was more like whiskey than medicine until Andy finds out for them.
  • 88. "The Darlings Are Coming"The Darling Family is made of mountain people and seem to always be a ways behind the times. When they come into town, the daughter thinks Andy is so handsome and begins to fall for him! This is the first episode with the Darling Family.
  • 89. "Andy's English Valet"Malcom Merriweather is visiting from England and gets himself in a bit of trouble in Mayberry. When he can't pay off his fine Andy lets him stay and work around his house to pay off the fine.
  • 90. "Barney's First Car"Barney decides to spend his nestegg on a car and falls right into the hands of a "sweet little old" lady who deals in stolen cars. However, she didn't count on Andy and Barney finding their way back to her chop shop!
  • 91. "The Rivals"When Opie can't seem to get the attention of a girl he likes, Thelma Lou steps in to cheer him up by spending some time with him. This, of course, makes Barney jealous!
  • 92. "A Wife for Andy"Barney tries to help Andy find a wife by letting him know about all the available girls in town. Barney's tactics though are a bit strange! Andy, however, seems content with the idea that the right girl will come along eventually.
  • 93. "Dogs, Dogs, Dogs"When Opie brings home a stray dog Andy tries to tell Opie that they can't keep it. However, the dog has many friends that come visit him at the courthouse just before the state inspector is coming. This is my favorite episode thanks largely to a scene with Barney talking about giraffes. Boy, giraffes sure are selfish!
  • 94. "Mountain Wedding"Ernest T. Bass will not recognize the marraige between Charlene Darling and Dud Wash and he wants one more chance to try to win the heart of Charlene. This is the first episode with Ernest T. Bass in it. Note: Ernest T. Bass is played by Howard Morris, one of the producers of The Andy Griffith Show.
  • 95. "The Big House"Barney is proud to have two prisoners in the jail so he tells them about how it is at "the rock", otherwise known as the courthouse. Of course, the prisoners then escape leaving Barney feeling terrible.
  • 96. "Briscoe Declares for Aunt Bee"Briscoe Darling falls head over heels for Aunt Bee much to her dismay. He changes his mind, however, when he discovers how demanding she can be in her household.
  • 97. "Gomer the House Guest"Gomer loses his home and job all at once so he comes to live at the Taylor household. The Taylor's however can't wait for him to find a new job and place to live.
  • 98. "The Haunted House"Opie and some friends lose a baseball in the haunted house so Andy and Barney go in to get the ball and see just how haunted the house is. Much to their surprise, they aren't the only ones in the house!
  • 99. "Ernest T. Bass Joins the Army"Ernest T. wants a uniform (so he can get a girl) so he joins the Army. Andy tries to help him out the best he can.
  • 100. "Sermon for Today"A preacher from New York comes to give them a sermon on slowing down and relaxing..."What's your hurry?". Everyone then works themselves to threads trying to set up a band concert!
  • 101. "Opie the Birdman"Opie finds out about life and death when he accidentaly kills a mother bird with his slingshot. He then takes it upon himself to see that the baby birds are raised until they are old enough to fly away. Very touching episode. The scene where Opie releases the birds is another of my favorite scenes.
  • 102. "A Black Day for Mayberry"Andy and Barney must keep a secret about a gold shipment that is to pass through Mayberry. But, of course, Barney just can't keep a secret, so they must try hard to keep the people away and get the truck out of town as quickly as possible.
  • 103. "Opie's Ill-Gotten Gain"When Andy sees that Opie had all A's on his report card, he buys Opie a brand new bicycle. However, Opie can't quite bring himself to telling his pa that those grades were a mistake.
  • 104. "Up in Barney's Room"Barney's landlady, Mrs. Mendelbright, evicts Barney from his apartment for cooking in his room. Barney then tries hard to get his room back and assure her that there won't be any more problems. Hilarious scene where Barney accidentally gets drunk.
  • 105. "A Date for Gomer"Thelma Lou sets Gomer up with her homely cousin for a date on the night of a big dance. Nobody is sure how it will turn out, nobody except Gomer that is! "Oh she's nice, she's real nice."
  • 106. "Citizen's Arrest"Barney gives Gomer a traffic ticket and Gomer tries to get back at him by making a citizen's arrest on Barney for making an illegal u-turn. Barney can't believe what happens and threatens to quit his job. Great scenes of Barney in jail in this one!
  • 107. "Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C."Andy decides to go along with Gomer when Gomer joins the Marines. Andy is acting as a lookout to see how Gomer does in the military (which doesn't start off too well). This episode led to the "Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C." television series.
  • 108. "Opie and His Merry Men"A hobo tries to turn Opie and his friends against Andy by convincing them that all lawmen were bad and couldn't be trusted. This makes for a bad situation for Andy to try to explain to Opie.
  • 109. "Barney and the Cave Rescue"Barney tries to round up a rescue group when he finds out that Andy and Helen are trapped in a cave. Andy and Helen want to make sure that Barney finds them to raise his morale when the townspeople question his ability. Great feel-good episode.
  • 110. "Andy and Opie's Pal"Opie makes a new friend that Andy takes a liking to. However, Opie becomes jealous because Andy isn't spending as much time with him now.
  • 111. "Aunt Bee the Crusader"When Andy must evict a local farmer out of his house, Aunt Bee decides to do whatever she can to help the farmer out. This, of course, leads to a sticky situation between Andy and Aunt Bee for a while.
  • 112. "Barney's Sidecar"Barney decides that the Mayberry Police needs a motorcycle and sidecar added to the force. This leads to Barney driving everyone nuts with it, including Andy, until Andy comes up with a brilliant idea to get rid of it. Hilarious shots of Barney in this one.
  • 113. "My Fair Ernest T. Bass"Hilarious episode where Andy tries to teach Ernest T. about the finer things of life so he can pass him off at a well-to-do gathering. It works...for a little while.
  • 114. "Prisoner of Love"When a female burglar is jailed in Mayberry she uses her female charm to get to Andy and Barney. She succeeds with both of them for a while.
  • 115. "Hot Rod Otis"Otis decides it is time for him to buy a car. However, Andy and Barney are afraid he will be driving drunk and hurt somebody. Great scene towards the end with Otis in the jail and Andy and Barney talking about him. Note: Andy, Barney, and Otis are the only three characters to appear in this episode.
  • 116. "The Song Festers"Barney is supposed to have a solo in the choir until it is accidentally discovered that Gomer, yes Gomer, has an absolutely beautiful voice. Jim Nabors who played Gomer has recorded several albums throughout his career.
  • 117. "The Shoplifters"Andy and Barney are trying to find the shoplifters who are stealing things from Weaver's Department Store. Great scene with Barney posing as a mannequin in the store.
  • 118. "Andy's Vacation"Andy can't seem to get any rest at home while on his vacation so he heads to the mountains for a few days. However, he didn't realise that Barney had let a prisoner escape and he is heading Andy's way.
  • 119. "Andy Saves Gomer"Andy puts out a fire in Gomer's room while Gomer is asleep. Therefore, Gomer is convinced that Andy saved his life and becomes a nuisance by trying to repay Andy for his good deed.
  • 120. "Bargain Day"Aunt Bee decides to buy a side of beef from a bargain meat shop and her freezer goes out on the same day. Andy then tries to convince her that not all bargains are as they seem; meanwhile she must find something to do with the beef until the freezer is fixed.
  • 121. "Divorce, Mountain Style"Andy is surprised to find out that he has helped Charlene Darling to get a "mountain divorce" and now he is her new love!
  • 122. "A Deal Is a Deal"Opie and some of his friends are trying to sell some "Miracle Salve" that couldn't help with or cure anything! However, leave it to Barney and Gomer to come up with a hair-brained idea on how to get rid of it. Funny scenes with Barney and Gomer...
  • 123. "Fun Girls"The "fun girls" from Mt. Pilot come to visit Andy and Barney at work. However, Helen and Thelma Lou spot the girls there and immediately think that Andy and Barney wanted them there. Watch out for the jealous girls!! Note: this is the only episode with Gomer and Goober in it together.
  • 124. "The Return of Malcolm Merriweather"Malcolm Merriweather is traveling again and returns to Mayberry for a visit with the Taylors. As he works around their house he unintenionally makes Aunt Bee feel that she is no longer needed by the boys.
  • 125. "The Rumor"Leave it to Barney to start a rumor that Andy and Helen are going to be married. Therefore a big party is planned in their honor until the big secret is found out to be another one of Barney's blunders!
  • 126. "Barney and Thelma Lou, Phfftt"When Barney explains to Gomer that he has Thelma Lou "in my hip pocket", Thelma Lou finds out and decides to show Barney otherwise. She then uses poor Gomer to make Barney jealous and to make him realize she's not in his hip pocket!
  • 127. "Back to Nature"Barney tries to show his natural pioneering abilities when he, Andy, and Gomer take Opie and some of his friends camping. However, when Barney and Gomer go looking for a missing Opie, they become lost themselves! Don't worry, Andy saves the day...again.
  • 128. "Barney's Bloodhound"Barney decides that they need a police dog on their force. However, the dog isn't exactly excited about his new job. This one has a great scene with Floyd talking about the dog towards the beginning!
  • 129. "Family Visit"Some of Andy and Aunt Bee's relatives come to visit and stay with them in Mayberry for a while. However, Andy and Aunt Bee begin wishing they would cut their visit short.
  • 130. "Aunt Bee's Romance"Aunt Bee begins to date an old friend of hers who is a very boring man. Andy gets frustrated thinking that Aunt Bee might marry the old guy.
  • 131. "Barney's Physical"The State Police say that all deputies must meet physical standards which include being one inch taller and a few pounds heavier than Barney! Andy and Aunt Bee then must stretch and feed Barney to make him meet the requirements.
  • 132. "Opie Loves Helen"Miss Crump becomes surprised to learn that Opie has a crush on her and must deal with it somehow.
  • 133. "The Education of Ernest T. Bass"Ernest T. Bass must get his diploma so he can impress one of the girls in the mountains. However, educating Ernest T. isn't an easy task!
  • 134. "The Man in the Middle"Andy tries to help Barney and Thelma Lou when they are having a little lover's spat, but that only gets Helen and himself dragged into the middle of it!
  • 135. "Barney's Uniform"Barney is threatened by a man who says he will rip Barney apart as soon as he sees him out of uniform. Therefore Barney tries to get away with wearing his uniform all the time until Andy figures out what is going on. Good episode for Barney.
  • 136. "Opie's Fortune"Opie is excited to find $50 and must wait one week to see if anyone will come in to claim it. Opie then learns a little lesson in life. Good moral story.
  • 137. "Goodbye, Sheriff Taylor"Barney is the sheriff for a day while Andy goes to Raleigh to discuss a job opening there. This, of course, leads to mass chaos in Mayberry!
  • 138. "The Pageant"The town is putting on their Centennial Pageant and Aunt Bee is trying out for the lead role but is struggling with it.
  • 139. "The Darling Baby"Now that the Darlings have a baby, they must come into town to find a young boy to be the one their little girl will marry. Much to Andy's dismay, they think Opie would be the right one for their girl!
  • 140. "Andy and Helen Have Their Day"Andy and Helen just want a peaceful day by themselves at the lake, but with Barney in charge at the sheriff's office there is no peace! Watch for the appearance of Ernest T. (Howard Morris) as a different character in this one.
  • 141. "Otis Sues the County"When Otis slips and falls in the jail, a lawyer talks him into suing the town and the sherriff's office much to Andy and Barney's surprise. However, Otis actually thinks he is doing them a favor!
  • 142. "Three Wishes for Opie"Barney tries his hand at some magic and Opie earns three wishes because of it...but is it really magic?
  • 143. "Barney Fife, Realtor"Barney looks to make some money in real estate and talks Andy into selling his house. Of course, with Barney in charge of this, a few problems arise in the process.
  • 144. "Goober Takes a Car Apart"Goober must watch over the courthouse and fix Gilly Walker's car at the same time. He then comes up with a hairbrained idea of how to do both at the same time!
  • 145. "The Rehabilitation of Otis"Barney tries to help Otis quit drinking by playing phsycologist on Otis. However, this only upsets Otis and makes him leave town while he is mad at Barney.
  • 146. "The Lucky Letter"Barney becomes paranoid about a chain letter he threw away since the qualifications at the police shooting range are coming up!
  • 147. "Goober and the Art of Love"Andy and Barney help Goober to find a girl but then must also help him with how to act around her. Barney then really upsets Andy by taking Goober to spy on Andy and Helen!
  • 148. "Barney Runs for Sheriff"Andy forgets to get his name in for the sheriff's election and Barney is running! However, a write-in campaign gets started and is encouraged by Barney...eventually!
  • 149. "If I Had a Quarter Million"When Barney finds a quarter of a million dollars that someone stole, he thinks he can use it to catch the guy. He botches this up of course and Andy comes to the rescue!
  • 150. "TV or Not TV"Andy has an article in a magazine about him called "The Sherriff without a Gun" and now someone wants to make a movie about him...or so they thought. They are really there checking Mayberry's old bank vault!
  • 151. "Guest in the House"A friend of Andy's and Aunt Bee's, who happens to be quite attractive, is staying with them for a few days. This, of course, makes Helen jealous and leaves Andy in a hard spot to deal with.
  • 152. "The Case of the Punch in the Nose"Barney pulls up an old case that was never officially closed involving Floyd and Charlie Foley. One punched the other one originally and bringing the case back up gets tempers flaring and people are getting punched all over town!
  • 153. "Opie's Newspaper"Opie and a friend decide to print a newspaper; however, there main source of information is whatever town gossip they can get from spying on peoples' conversations!
  • 154. "Aunt Bee's Invisible Beau"When Aunt Bee thinks that her living with Andy is keeping him from getting married, she lies and says that she is dating the egg man. However, the egg man finds out and is not too happy about it!
  • 155. "The Arrest of the Fun Girls"When Andy and Barney have to arrest the fun girls for speeding things get a little crazy at the jail. Of course this makes Helen and Thelma Lou jealous and only makes things more difficult for Andy and Barney.
  • 156. "The Luck of Newton Monroe"A traveling salesman who can't do much is going through town and Barney decides to get him to help around the courthouse for a while. However, every job he tries ends in a disaster!
  • 157. "Opie Flunks Arithmetic"When Opie brings home a bad grade in math Andy forces him to study much more. However, this only makes Opie dislike it even more and actually do worse!
  • 158. "Opie and the Carnival"Opie tries real hard to win Andy a prize at the shooting gallery at the carnival. However, the men had fixed the guns so he couldn't win. Andy finds out and takes charge of the situation.
  • 159. "Banjo-Playing Deputy"Jerry Van Dyke (later of the sitcom "Coach" and TV commercials) plays a banjo player looking for a job and Andy offers him a deputy position. Van Dyke has some really funny scenes in this episode!
