| HALL OF SHAME: STUDENT BLOOPERS The following anonymous quotes were taken from essays written by students for final theory exams in courses that I taught at the University of the West Indies. These are presented only for their humor; they should not be misconstrued as reflecting my teaching ability or my students' intellectual capacity. Animal Behaviour "Instinctive behaviour is a type of behaviour which occurs by instinct." "Predators must feed optimally, and choose prey which would give them best energy intake. This information is sometimes inert and at times learnt." "Preys [sic] on the other hand also have adapted ways to prey being eaten." "Predators can be misguided when the prey smartly chops of [sic] part of its body." "Another, more extreme example of this is anatomical autonomy. This is where a body part is lost but can be regenerated at a later time in an area of safety..." "Males tend to be the more dominant race and the more superior species, when compared with females." "Therefore male species will have fewer offsprings [sic] because of time spent defending their territory." "Birds are the only species that are largely monogamous..." "The third and final major mating system is promisuoity [sic] in which an individual mates with several other individuals at one time and over a period of time." Caribbean Island Ecology "Speciation is the ability for organisms to successfully disperse." "Vicariance refers to a result of the processes of speciation." "Diffuse competition occurs where with an insular community due to lack of interspecific gene interaction there is a lack of direct competition." "Ecological release refers to the introduction of new organisms to an area, in this case in island biotas... ecological release results in a change in the natural environment of an island... Ecological release changes the composition of the environment in island biotas..." "The taxon cycle is one in which evolutionary changes produce stages in the life cycle of an organism." "Also the taxon cycle may cause long term climatic changes which will in turn affect the biota of the area." "...some birds such as the Cattle egret and Horned Screamer were driven into extinction by man in Trinidad." Conservation Biology "Genetic drift is a rapid decrease in population of a species, which causes the population to decrease rapidly resulting in the loss of genetic information and variability." "It is more relevant to save an ecosystem rather than a particular species because it is better to preserve an ecosystem rather than a species." General Ecology and Biometry "In terms of the increase of the number of eggs layed [sic] this can be because of increase [sic] food resources organisms then [sic] to explode if there is an abundance of food." |
