This bird was first found by Murray Berner on 17 December 2006 and again on 18 November 2007 and 25 October 2008. The broad white subterminal line near the tip of the bill, the narrow white line at the base of the bill, and the solid dark-gray back are characteristic of Ring-necked Duck. The greenish head with an angular bumpy peak toward the forecrown is characteristic of Greater Scaup. The head is greener and more rounded, the back is darker and the sides whiter than in male Ring-necked Ducks. The back is darker than in male Greater Scaup, which lacks the narrow white line at the base of the bill. In 2007, a similar appearing male Tufted Duck (A. fuligula) was nearby, but it had a narrower white subterminal band at the tip of the bill, it lacked the white line at the base of the bill, its head was darker and more rounded with only a slight tuft, its back was darker and its sides were whiter.
