Elementary school in the Petak village

Project manager:
Kees and Wayan Hoekstra

Just as the most villages in Bali (and actually over the whole Indonesia) the most villagers work on the rice fields and/or in the adjoining cities as construction worker. With the present economy, become always less new projects started in Indonesia which results in a high unemployment in the villages. This affects most the children.

Flowgi started a project to support a village school in the North East of Bali.

The school knows 87 pupils divided over class 1 till and with 6 (comparable to group 1 t/m 8 in the Netherlands) and 7 teachers.  During the visit of family Hoekstra, one has indicated what  kind of things are necessary for the school.

In September 2004, Kees and Wayan will meanwhile start with the first activities, to bring the necessary improvements to bring before the beginning of the new school year.

Flowgi will first start to provide the school with the necessary equipment like pens, books, blackboards etc.

Later this year we will start with the renovation of the building.

Report of Wayan' s visit to Bali September 2004

On Tuesday September 21st 2004 there was a meeting with Wayan Padmi, on behalf of Flowgi Foundation, and the head of the villageschool of Petak Bali.

Wayan explains about the Flowgi Foundation, who are we, what do we do, how do we work. After that Wayan discussed how Flowgi could help this school.
The head over the school is very happy with this help, he is a very dedicated teacher but very limited because of the lack of schoolequipment and materials and a very bad accomodation.

There is a big need of everything, schoolbooks, writing books, pens, worldmaps, blackboards etc.

Besides above the building is in a very bad condition, damaged doors, no windows, a leaking roof and heavily damaged walls which makes the building very unsave.

Together with Flowgi a plan was made in order to solve all these problems, a proposal was discussed and agreed. The first phase of the project was to provide the childeren and the school with all the necesary materials. All the needed things were bought locally. The pens were already contributed by DHL, KLM and Garuda Indonesia.

On Wednesday September 22nd all 87 students were called by the head of the school and came to the central place at the school.
He explained the childeren about Flowgi Foundation and how Flowgi will help them and the school.
He tells that the kids can thank Flowgi by doing their best in studying.
After the speech Wayan started to hand over to every child one set of writing books, pens, schoolbooks and a map. For the teacher she handed over blackboards a globe and worldmaps.
The kids and teacher were very happy and there was a great atmosphere.
With this gift the teacher are able to improve their quality of teaching as they can now show on the blackboards and the kids can also read in their own books while the teacher is explaining.

Together with Mr I Ketut Musna a plan was made for the 1st phase of the renovation, Decided was to start with repairing and replacing the doors, windows and the walls. The 2nd phase will be the repair of the roof.
The budget for the 1st phase is about US$ 700.- (6 million Rupiah)
The start of the renovation will be in first week of October 2004.

On this website we keep you informed about the progress of the renovation
