What is "Draconity?"
A look into the spirit of a Dragon
Back to the Den! To the Art!
When you hear the word "dragon," what do you think of?  A large, reptilian, winged and fire-breathing monster?  Or perhaps a long, serpentine, maned and harmonious beast?  Either way, I am sure that the thought of dragons is just that, a mere thought.  Dragons are nothing more than a creature derived from the depths of your imagination, right?  I argue that dragons, in a less tangible and physical sense, are very much existent and among us.
Just about every religion and metaphysical belief contains the idea that each and every one of us has a spirit.  Much of the time this belief is anthropocentric, claiming that only humans have spirits, but some individuals and groups feel that plants, animals and even minerals hose spirits.  But what is a spirit?  I feel that a spirit is that underlying sense of being, the subconscious core of our thoughts and experiences that remains constant as we change and evolve over time and over lives (yes, I'm a strong believer in reincarnation).  The more we search these deeper areas of our personality, the more we can learn about ourselves and understand our placement in the world.  Through these growths, our spirits become individuals, representations of who we are; each and every spirit becomes comfortable with certain personalities, certain physical bodies, and these tend to be expressed through our words, actions, and if you believe in multiple lives, through the bodies we reincarnate as.
I believe that along with favored personalities and bodies comes a favoried identification of a spirit.  Some spirits follow the Path of a human, while others follow the Path of a tiger or a heron.  This belief is nothing new that I created on a whim - just about every Native American religion, religions that have been around for centuries, includes such an animistic belief.  Different spirits fall into different archetypes, different energies, or different "medicines," as it is referred to in many Native American beliefs.  Spirits that are strong and social leaders may take on the spiritual form of a wolf, and these spirits may incarnate as wolves on Earth.  Or spirits who are wise, thoughtful and a bit clairovoyant may feel comfortable as an owl, therefore incarnating as owls and identifying strongly with this animal.
Every once in a while, a spirit that is a wolf or an owl may reincarnate as a human.  Which is all fine and dandy, for being born as a creature outside of one's identity and general character is, in my opinion, the best way for one to gain further experience and wisdom with respect to journeying down a spiritual Path.  However, there are times when those who are wolves or those who are owls recognize that they are in a body foreign from what the spirit is accustomed to.  Sometimes this spirit is *gasp!* a dragon!  And sometimes these dragons are well aware that they are in a body very foreign from what they are accustomed to.  This is what is commonly dubbed as Draconity, the belief that one houses the spirit of a dragon, and that one acknowledges that their physical body conflicts what they spiritually identify as.  Some people refer to themselves as a dragon because they feel a spiritual connection to the fabulous beasts, while others feel that they once truly existed as the beast and have been reincarnated as a human.
I am one of thousands who identifies with dragons.  I am one of those individuals who believes that I once physically lived as a dragon, , and that I have been reincarnated in a human body.  Yes, I believe that dragons once existed on Earth, and for spiritual and ecological reasons have gone extinct, but not all dragons are from Earth.  There are those who believe that they are from other planets or other planes of existence.  Some even believe they are from the future.  No matter what one believes, whether it be that they simply have a dragon spirit guide or that they truly are a dragon from Planet X, we all identify with the dragon as who we are in spirit  You don't have to believe me, you don't have to believe anything any other individual who claims to be a dragon or an animal says, but I do ask that you respect the spirituality and soul-searching that is represented when you read or hear "I am a dragon."  Thanks for reading this, and thanks for your respect!
