Foo Fighters
Formed - 1994, (1995 with other members) Seattle, WA

The beginning ----> present

Before Dave Grohl joined Nirvana in 1990, he had been involved in variety of hardcore punk bands such as Scream and Dain Bramage and had provided songs for a cassette  released by Simple Machines called Pocketwatch. Dave Grohl had begun recording his own solo material while he was still with Scream at his friend Barrett Jones' basement studio. When Dave Grohl joined Nirvana in 1990 he was still recording songs and he toyed with the idea of releasing a solo album whilst he was still with Nirvana.

After Kurt Cobain committed sucide in 1994, Dave Grohl used his demos as a foundation for his album and went into the studio with Barrett Jones and recorded his debut album in a week. Foo Fighters began as a solo project for Dave Grohl,  recording everything himself apart from one song (X-Static) on which Greg Dulli (Afghan Whigs) played. In 1995, Dave Grohl signed with Capital Records and recruited members: Nate Mendel (bassist, of Sunny Day Real Estate), Pat Smear (geetarist. of Nirvana and Germs) and William Goldsmith (drums, also of Germs) for his new band which he christened 'Foo Fighters'. The band was named after a secret World War II force that had allegedly researched UFOs.

Th debut album 'Foo Fighters' was released on July 4th 1995 and the song 'This is a call' became an instant success in America on alternative and rock radio. In 1996, the album became platinum and throught '96 the band toured extensivly. In late 1996 the band entered the studio to work on the second album -  the first album they had recorded as a whole band. During the recording William Goldsmith left the band leaving Dave Grohl to drum on the remainder of the album.

In 1997, Willimam Goldsmith was replaced with Taylor Hawkins who had previously drummed with Alanis Morisette. Soon after the album was completed Pat Smear left the band and was replaced with Franz Stahl, who also left the band a few months later. The Foo Fighters' latest album - There is nothing legt too lose was recorded as a three piece and the band later recruited guitarist Chris Shiflett (No use for a name) in 2000. The album released five singles from that album; Stacked Actors, Generator, Learn to fly, Breakout and New Year and the album became a hit both  in America and abroad.

Out of the thre albums I
wsould have to say that 'Foo Fighters' is the best album, it is less rocky than 'The colour and the shape' and more has more punky/grungey tones and is less poppy/mellow than 'There is nothing left to lose'. 'Foo Fighters' contains some magic left over from Nirvana and the Pocketwatch demos. Dave Grohl's lyrics for the album sometimes dont make much sense of have that much meaning, but the songs are still brilliant. Over all i think that the Foo Fighters were a much better band than Nirvana, they had more depth, greater musical ability and with follow up albums to 'Foo Fighters' just as good lyrics as Nirvana.
