 First Love
l will always remember your tender smile,
and the light that played in your dark eyes,
Your gentle voice made you seem peaceful,
Your soft words made you seem wise,
You came into my life, a real life cowboy,
not a sequined, tasseled, country music fake,
You actually slept out under a myriad of stars,
and hearing you made my wanderlust ache,
You were done with a vanishing job,
and newly come in from the West,
You told me tales of the open range,
and the freedom of it sounded the best,
You shot as well as a gunslinger,
but never forgot your country courtesy,
You didn't know to kiss a lady's hand,
But you always tipped your hat to me,
And I would cook for you sometimes,
You always loved a homemade meal,
We soon became close friends,
yet stolen glances showed how we would feel,
I will never forget running free with you,
dashing through the overgrown fields,
the horses we discovered together,
and the days of fun summer yields,
You taught me how to tend those steeds,
for from their neglect they might have died,
They were too broken to be anything but pets,
But on your mount you showed me how to ride,
I knew the basics; but you could do all the tricks,
and you knew how to touch a wild horse's heart,
like a head strong girl budding into a woman,
needs a gentle hand for her love's bloom to start,
I remember taking hikes in the woods,
exploring unknowns paths and forging trails,
You used to teach me how to track animals,
and share with me your ancestor's tales,
Your heritage always seemed rich to me,
yet you told me how you felt so alone,
Pulled between two world, you couldn't win,
But I saw you for you the man I had known,
Remember the first time we made love?
It was a first for you and for me,
Your long dark hair fell in my face,
Your hard bronze body was paradise to see,
You kissed me softly and slowly,
You were firm but gentle with your touch,
We moved together like the ocean,
I never knew I could claim bliss so much,
Bodies entwined in the most intimate embrace,
I just had to look at this miracle and view,
where man met woman and became one,
and alabaster skin pressed against copper hue,
I'll never forget how you brushed my flesh,
I had never felt beautiful until then,
I'll always remember how close you held me,
In that moment, we became more than just friends,
You were my first kiss and everything else,
as we turned into lovers for the night,
Afterwards, we kept our passion in check,
to both of us our friendship felt more right,
We were so comfortable together in love,
and I was so young I valued cuddling over lust,
Still there was a spark that never died after,
You were just so easygoing it was never a must,
I remembered all that joyful times together,
but life could be cruel with nowhere to hide,
You arms were always a refuge then,
and you persistently soothed me as I cried,
But I was sailing in a whirlpool of despair,
The fun adventures just kept me sane,
You saved me countless times I know,
But there was just too much pain,
The down times for me were so many,
I know that's how I drove you away,
I just wanted you to know from my heart,
that I wish I had you back this day,
But where are you now my sweet first love?
How does one erase the past?
I loved you then and love you still,
but first loves rarely ever last.
