Elven Love of a Mortal Maid
You are the flash of a shooting star,
that will only fall too fast,
You are a resplendent double rainbow,
that though gracing me now, will not last,
You are a glint of heavenly light,
upon the waves of the sparkling sea,
Like a prismatic bubble in my hand,
you soon will not belong to me,
Like the rarest enchanting blue rose,
you will wither and fade,
Leaving me alone like a diamond,
that can never be unmade,
From my long eternity I have watched,
forests be born, grow old, and die,
and I dread, My Melting Snowflake,
the time when we must say goodbye,
I gaze at you like the dewdrops,
glistening on calla lilies fair,
and know, My Tropical Sunset,
that your beauty is more rare,
Like a fragrance on the wind,
or the last note of a symphony,
you pass through a mortal world,
like an angel who never again shall be,
Like the first kiss of true love,
or the breath of a babe yet unnamed,
you are an ephemeral treasure,
that cannot be kept nor reclaimed,
You are like the mystic moonflower,
that only blooms for one night,
or the butterfly emerging from its chrysalis,
spreading its stained glass wings for first flight,
Each hour I watch your beauty wax,
and remember when our hearts first beat as one,
I see that this is your moment to enchant,
yet fear that soon your spark will wane and be done,
All the fairest joys in this world are fleeting,
and so my haunting damsel must you be,
for such beauty has magic too bright for this world,
and will burn out long before my span of eternity,
So brief, a delicate flame you are, Fallen Petals,
last fragile leaf of Autumn for me,
soon a veil I cannot rend will come between us,
let us hope Love can conquer Destiny.
