The
Olympics are over, but the participation of People
to People International and the State of Florida at the Florida World
Pavilion in an exciting adventure in Sydney, Australia made history.
Based
on a shared commitment with People to People, and the promise of connecting
people of diverse cultures and cultural experiences together for a better
world, the Florida Department of State opened a World Pavilion to
operate at Darling Harbour, during the time frame of the Summer Olympic
Games in Sydney 2000.
The World Pavilion, located near downtown Sydney, operation stayed open for approximately four weeks. The Pavilion was housed on the ground floor of the former Sydney Harbour Casino, only a seven minute walk from Cockle Bay. In addition to visiting the Pavilion, visitors were able to enjoy the festive environment of dining and shopping found at Cockle Bay - along with the excitement of the Olympic sports competitions occurring at nearby venues. Florida's Secretary of State, Katherine Harris, adds that not only will humanity gain from this experience, but so will the trade and tourism opportunities be increased for Florida and their partners. Harris continued, "As Sydney is the English speaking gateway to Southeast Asia, so is Florida the gateway to the Americas. We have much to gain through this program and through our association with people to People International." In exchanging ideas and new energies, we continue to understand that relationships do matter, after all, wouldn't you rather do business with a friend? "Fostering an understanding between nations and people is a fundamental principle in the mission of the People to People International program founded in 1956 by President Dwight Eisenhower," said Mary Jean Eisenhower, CEO of People to People International. Making new friends was the first order of business at the Florida World Pavilion. Activities ranged from the "discovery of the new world" displays depicting St. Augustine, Florida, the oldest U.S. city, to NASA's Space Shuttle Discovery and the vision for the new century from the stars above in the "land down under." Also available was information about the Florida's more than 1,000 golf courses and fabulous beaches and resorts. |
