When the Viet Nam war ended with the death of more than three million Vietnamese, five hundred thousand American soldiers were withdrawn from Viet Nam. However, 3.5 million landmines and 300,000 tons of unexploded ordnance (UXO) remain in Vietnamese territory. Since 1975, more than 38,000 innocent civilians have been killed and another 64,000 maimed by landmines accidents. Viet Nam is among the countries most severely affected by landmines and UXO
