FLORENCE COUNTY CITIZENS IN ACTION

Minutes of Regular Meeting

January 23, 2006

 

 

            1.  The regular monthly meeting of FCCIA was held at the Venus Restaurant in Florence.  Chairman Lou Vause convened the meeting at 7:00 p.m., welcoming approximately 23 members and guests.  Murray Jordan led the Pledge of Allegiance.

 

            2.  Treasurer Licia Stone reported as follows:  Opening Balance, $1563.87.  Receipts from new memberships and renewals, $150.00.  A disbursement to Fit-to-Print, $150.00.  Ending balance as of this date, $1602.87.

 

            3.  By general assent, the posting of our last meeting minutes will constitute their reading.

 

            4.  Our guest speaker, Mark Buyck, III, Chairman of Friends of the Florence Stockade, spoke on the history of the Stockade and its potential for restoration as a historic and tourism attraction.

 

            5.  Lou Vause will meet with the Membership Committee to develop strategies.  There was a brief discussion of publicity matters, especially brochures and bumper stickers.  Lou asked members to assist with locating an economical source for more bumper stickers.

 

            6.  Lou Vause and Licia Stone reported on their recent three-hour meeting with new Florence County Administrator, Richard Starks.  The meeting was cordial and left them with a positive impression of the new administrator.  Topics included:  the proposed 1-cent sale tax increase and its relationship to the $30 road tax; the Utility Enterprise Fund and the establishment of a Water and Sewer Authority.

 

            7.  Chairman Vause has written the Florence County Legislative Delegation regarding our proposal to make countywide offices non-partisan.  So far we have received an acknowledgement from Senator Land and a cordial response from Senator Leatherman, which she read to the members.

 

            8.  The Venus Restaurant has advised that, beginning next month, they will charge either $50 for the use of their room, or $1 per person attending.  Alternative meeting locations were discussed.  Barbara Burgess will check with the new Bazen’s Restaurant on Irby Street, Tommy Griffin will contact the County Library, and Mamie Gray will check with Carolinas Hospital System about their new public building.

 

            9.  The meeting adjourned at 8:20 p.m.
