"I once invited a friend over to try my Philips home theater," relates Michel Noun, Product Manager of Philips Electronics Middle East and Africa. "We popped in a Lord of the Rings DVD, and as the movie progressed, with all the sound effects, my friend would keep glancing behind him. Relax, I said. It's just my home theater system!" he narrates with a laugh.

Going DVD
It's a personal cinematic experience without even leaving your living room. All it takes is a TV set and a Philips home theater system, the latest in the Philips line of audio products. The models come with a powered subwoofer, five compact 2-way satellite speakers and a dual laser DVD, and uses Dolby Digital Surround for picture and sound improvement in one system. "It is delightful! You can sit and watch in the comfort of your home. Just add a TV to your home theater and you get a near-cinema experience. The sound is perfect, without distortion. It's well divided, so you really feel that you are living the movie. You become Julia Roberts, or Robert De Niro. Like, you are there with them," he tells.
"The home theater has become mainstream since people are more comfortable at home. You buy DVD, you invite friends, it's cozier. When I don't have time to watch a movie, I don't panic anymore because I know I have the option of watching it later at home," he adds.
"Philips is the first to introduce the DVD technology and we came up with the first DVD player in early 1998 when nobody knew what DVD was," Noun tells. There are currently four models for the Philips DVD home theater. More popular among the lot is the LX8000SA, an integrated SACD/DVD digital
home entertainment system with 5 compact satellite speakers and a powered subwoofer with a 250-watt power. The system has a full DVD video playback, as well as DVD-RW, CD, CD-RW and CD-MP3. Also in the mainstream are home theater audio systems and DVD mini systems and recorders. Newer models will also be introduced later this year, says Noun.

Audio do?
The wOOx technology is what separates Philips audio products from others, Noun tells. "In many cases our performance surpasses competitors because of our special wOOx technology. Our subwoofer enriches bass without the distortion," he says. "When you compare, the competition may offer louder sets but with distortion. We make sure the distortion is very low. So that when you listen to music, even if it is in high volume, you still can enjoy the music," he explains

Mini and Micro Systems
High into sound power are the small but powerful mini systems. "In the UAE, the mini systems are doing well, especially minis with VCD, MP3 and high power," Noun says. The FW V355 has 1500 watts PMPO with digital sound control. It is on DSF promotion at Dhs. 699. At a hundred dirhams higher, the FW V520 model has 2200 watts PMPO with maximum bass and treble sound. The FW V785 model has 3200 PMPO and 1600 watts acoustic bass energy. On top of the line is the FW V795 with 6000 watts PMPO with 1600 acoustic bass energy. This model is available for Dhs. 1,299. MP3, CD, VCD and ACD playback capability are available on these models. Meanwhile, those who are looking for yet smaller, sleeker designs may opt for the micro systems, advises Noun. The MC-M250 model has a compact design with full features and an integrated CD recorder or DVD player.

CDR shelf systems
You can also burn music to your heart's content with the Philips CD recorder models. The models come with jog dial control and double speed recording features to save you time when recording from CD to CD. The FWR33 and FWR55 models in particular, have MP3 and AAC playback, surround sound, six digital sound controls and a 3-way bass speaker reflex system.

Portable Audio
There is also a wide range of portable audio players for music lovers on the go. The CD boomboxes have an incorporated MP3-CD technology. At Dhs. 399, the AZ1155 model offers 100 watt PMPO, jog control, digital tuner and a 14-key remote.
And let's not skip the portable CD players. With just 2 AA batteries, you can play up to 72 hours of music and get a 45-second electronic skip protection (ESP) with the super slim AX7201, available at Dhs. 419. For runners and riders, there is a range of wearable, skip-free MP3 players. Those who want the best of both can get the MP3 CD models. The Expanium CD Player offers a 100-second ESP with 20-hour MP3/CD-playback for over 100 songs.
Music is the essence of life, says Noun. "This is why at Philips we always want to give good performance and value for money," he says. "Some people consider music and entertainment as just an accessory in life. For other people, like me, life without it wouldn't really make sense."
