Althought the color red represents hope(dove) for some in the novel, for others it represents death.
In the novel, the color red is used also in the form of the red roses. These flowers serve a dual purpose. Not only do they mark the beginning of a new life for Paul D, Sethe and Denver, but it also marks the circus coming to town. This further shows the effect of the color red on the matter of life and death.
