Subject: Blowjobs for Beer - Crew Gencon Report
Date: 12 Aug 1997 00:00:00 GMT
Most of the Crew ( me, Max Szlagor and Sam Heckman ), various Bakers (
Kevin and Sean), and Bryant Cobarrubias met at Sam's house Wednesday to
take off for Gencon. On the way we stopped at a Wendy's overpass cause
we were all starving. And well, we love Wendy's. We got to teach Sean
Baker how to eat a pita.
We stopped 1/2 an hour shy of Gencon to stop at our hotel. That's what
happens when you don't get a room till the night before. There was an
amazing arcade will several high-tech video games like Arkanoid 2. Sam
was very excited.
We dropped off our stuff and moved on to hang out at the Hyatt next to
the convention center. There wasn't much going on at all. Max and I
playtested a little MiViWl, Sam left with some chicks to play Uno all
night, and Bryant and a baker went to George Webb for some fine dining.
We hung out with Bob Maher for a while and watched some very sad ante
games.
When we got back to the room we stayed up for a while waiting for the
pool to open at 6am. In the meantime Bryant attacked me while I was
laying on the couchbed and busted it hardcore. Come 6am we didn't end
up swimming but we did manage to catch the continental breakfast.
Bagels and Danishes. Yum. Bryant almost chokes to death while chugging
some milk.
Come 4pm on Thursday we arrive at Gencon. We wander around for a while
and get very, very bored. We get to hang out with Eric Tam and a bunch
of other kooky Canadians. We're hanging out at like 7 in the Hyatt
waiting for something to happen when some people inform us that the
Violent Femmes will be playing a concert in the street outside the
convention center. Needless to say it was the most exciting thing to
happen that day. We hang out outside by the Wotc tent, get some drinks
and talk. Meanwhile Adam Jansen and his girlfriend are walking around
offering people blowjobs for cash, beer or a place to stay for the
night. The Canadians let them stay with them for a night just cause
they felt sorry for 'em. Eric Tam then decided to stay with Bob Maher.
Sam ends up getting his drink taken away from him by security because
he's underage. He was most displeased.
The concert starts and we're all standing around towards the back
watching people dance. Eventually I got sick of the lack of a pit and
headed up front with Dan Baker in tow. When the next song starts I gave
the crowd a kick start and in no time there was a nice pit going.
Security decided they didn't like that and tried to stop everyone from
moshing. They didn't really have a whole lot of success. After a while
I got out of the pit to see where everybody else was. I found them all
still standing around in the back. We all went to get some more drinks
and then returned to the pit. This time it was me, Dan, Sam, Bob, Eric
Tam and Henry Stern in the mosh together. A couple really big security
guards got all in our way though and broke it up. One got all in
Stern's face and started threatening him. However Stern was quite
oblivious and continued dancing away. Shortly after that the concert
ended and we all returned to the Hyatt.
Back at the Hyatt Max got into an eight person sealed deck tourney for
cash. Sam and I sent a Baker across the street to get us some food
while we waited for Francis Keys and Melissa Lang to show up. We ate
our food and they still weren't there so Sam and I decided to drive
back to our hotel cause we thought they might stay there. After driving
the 1/2 hour to get there we find out that they're not staying there.
So we just hang out for a while and watch some TV before busting back
to the Hyatt. Max and Tam ended up splitting the money in the finals of
the sealed and we left to go back to the hotel shortly there after.
The next day we got back to the con at like 3pm and hooked up with
Francis, Melissa and Josh Matthews. We basically just hung out all day
watching them play in a draft tourney which Francis won. I also got to
win a dollar playing the variant against Yap's brother. Very, very
little happened all day. After the con closed we all went out to eat at
an italian place and it cost way too much money. It was not so geed.
We went back to our room afterwards, worked on decks and bit and tried
to figure out what we were going to play. Sam decided on his R/w
Aetherflash deck and Max and I played mono-blue. Nobody ever got to
sleep except Sam. At 6am we got to get more bagels and danishes. When
we woke up Sam at 8 he said he was feeling really sick and that he
wasn't going to the qualifier. So the 4 of us all piled into my pick-up
and went to the con.
We got there, filled out our deck lists, BSed for a while and waited
for Francis to show up. The tourney started and he wasn't there yet, he
decided to sleep in since he was already qualified. I'll put the actual
tournament report after I finish about the rest of the weekend.
After the con closed Saturday night we all went back to the Hyatt and
hung out talking. Some guy gave Melissa an invite the White Wolf party
and eventually she used her charms to get all of us in. The party was
pretty cool. We had some free drink tickets and the music was good. A
mosh pit erupted on the dance floor when the DJ played some Ministry
and they had to threaten to end the party to get everybody back under
control. Unfortunately they stopped serving alcohol at that point so we
left shortly afterwards. I played in a small draft with some of the
guys from team ACD just for fun and went like 1-1 before going back to
our hotel. We went to sleep pretty much right away cause we were all
dead tired.
Sunday morning ( which happened to be my birthday ) we got out of the
room at like noon ( check out was 11 ). We arrived at the con and
didn't do much at all for a few hours. Then I played in an 8 person
MiViWl booster draft which I won just as the con was closing. We went
back to the Hyatt for a little while, said goodbye to Francis, Mel, and
Josh and then took off for home. But not before Bryant managed to crush
yet another couch. This time one in the hotel lobby.
The actual tournament.

I'd tell you all about my deck and how it worked but i'm so sick of
typing all these stupid little details about the weekend that I don't
feel like it anymore. Later.
