Subject: Tournament Report - Gangsta Sligh - IL Date: 20 Jun 1997 00:00:00 GMT Tournament Report Gail Borden Public Library 6/19/97 Type II Single Elimination This is the first in a series of Free tournaments for teens in the Chicago suburbs. It's really cool that they took the time to give Kids something to do on a Thurs. night. Hats off to the organisers and the stores (Comic Quest and Don's Baseball cards and Comics) for donating prizes. Everyone that signed up got free Homelands!!!. None of The Crew were eligible to play (age max. was 17) we sent our Junior Pimp, Kevin Baker, to win the thing. He didn't have a deck, so I gave him a slightly modified version of our Regionals deck (the stock version is on the Magic Dojo web page). It was the first time he had seen or played the deck, but Kevin's style is pure beatdown, so I figured there wouldn't be a problem. Also, the rounds themselves were *very* short. The first 2 rounds were 2 of 3, 20 minute time limit!!!. The next 3 rounds were 1 game!!, 15 minute time limit!!. I guess there would be no Cop: Reds unless they were standard in the latter rounds. Here's the deck he used. *Gangsta Sligh 2 Death Spark 2 Disintegrate 4 Fireblast 2 Goblin Tinkerer 2 Hammer of Bogardan 4 Incinerate 4 Ironclaw Orcs 4 Orcish Artillery 4 Orcish Captain 4 Suq'Ata Lancer 3 Talruum Minotaur 3 Viashino Sandstalker 21 Mountain 1 Thawing Glaciers Sideboard ---------- 2 Nevinyrral's 2 Winter Orb 3 Dwarven Miner 4 Pyroblast 4 Pyrokinesis Round 1 vs. W/R Flanker deck Kevin Swept 2-0. Watching the games Ron and I noticed that Kevin was using way too much of his D.D. to eliminate meaningless creatures, and he never used the Artillery to shoot his anything. Between rounds we gave him a short lesson in the finer art of using the Double-Incinerate, Double-Fireblast combo to end the game. Who cares if they have creatures out?? Round 2 vs. Green Weenie Horde with Kaysa. Kevin Swept 2-0 Ron and I enjoyed free Chips Ahoy and Coke while we watched Kevin pummel this round's victim. We remind Kevin that Flanking doesn't work on defense. Round 3 vs. WW w/ Outpost Kevin Won (only 1 game round) Opponent went 1st turn Plains, 2nd turn Plains Mesa Pegasus, 3rd turn Outpost, Flanker. He died 2 turns later to the Incinerate, Double-Fireblast combo we taught Kevin after round 1. Round 4 vs. Joe W/R control Kevin Won (only 1 game round) A Lancer and Minotaur got in hits before they were pacified and Joe quickly lost to a Sandstalker and a Fireblast. Round 5 (finals) vs. Shawn U/W control. Kevin Won (only 1 game round) Shawn tapped out to run a Blinking Spirit and Kjeldoran Outpost. He lost to a Hammer and double-fireblast. The tournament would have been a lot cooler had there been time for real rounds, but the library closed too early to allow that to happen. Kevin took home a pack of Ultra Pro sleeves, a Reaper life counter, 3 packs of Homelands and some revised uncommons. It wasn't a great haul, but since all the prizes were donated and the tournament was free it was well worth it.
