Captain Edward Flint, as he came to be known, was born in Concord, Massachusettes on March 30, 1790, and died in Cape Elizabeth, Maine, on November 25, 1870. He is buried in South Portland, Maine. Edward married twice over the course of his life. The first marriage was to Nancy Brown (1797-1830) who bore him two infant sons that died young. His second wife, Almira Amanda Flint (1806-1862), also gave him two sons (Edward and Horace), who both survived to adulthood. |

Edward became a well known captain in the Army of the Potomac during the Civil War. He served under Major General George G. Meade as commanding officer of the 1st Massachusettes Cavalry, Company C. In this photo (above) he is pictured in the company of his fellow officers of the 1st Mass. Cavalry at the headquarters in Petersburg, Virginia (taken August, 1864). The officers pictured are (starting from the left): unknown, Capt. Edward Flint, Capt. Charles Francis Adams Jr., Lieutenant George Teague. In the photograph below he is shown in uniform standing next to his horse (date unknown). |
