Story of the Knights
As told by the Author
To start off, this section is basically an overview of the childhood of Sir Antoine and Sir Sebastien. This may contain some spoilers, but I tried to avoid that. I apologize if I crush anyones dreams. (Smirk).
In the beginning, Queen Angella and King Leon had twin sons. This was a big deal for the kingdom called Pravignon. (You can learn more about Pravignon in Sebastiens essay). Not only did it make Queen Angella a proud queenie, but they were born under some special stars. It was the year of the Lamb (like year of the Ram but different). Lamb years supposedly brings about peaceful rulers.
Lamb year? Big whoop right? Well, I wouldnt have mentioned it if it wasnt important now would I? (grin). A prophecy was made about an age or so ago about the "Pair" that would unite the kingdoms of elf and man, which have been warring for ages. These twin boys happen to fit under most of the criteria for the description of the "Pair".
Anywho, yeah, so its their destiny to fulfill a prophecy. However, there was another set of twin brothers who also fit under the description, Baron Peregrine and Baron Arnold. I talk more about them in the essay about Lucifer.
Okay, now on to the fun, embarrassing stuff. When the boys were born, they were identical twins. Oh fun. Ever babysat for identical twins? Its somewhat hard to tell them apart, especially if they dont respond to their names yet. This became a problem at some point as far as feeding goes. The nurses who fed them often could not tell which one they had nursed and which one had not. As it turns out, Antoine was getting fed twice which makes him a happy baby. Yet Sebastien was starving. To avoid the possibility of losing one of the twins to starvation and gluttony, Angella had their ears pierced Antoine on the left ear and Sebastien on the right. That is why they have earrings.
Five years later, the boys are five. (For those whose math skills equal my own.) Antoine was a hardy fellow, a tad on the pudgy side. Big apple cheeks. He quickly became Angellas favorite and she spoiled him rotten. Antoine has a close friendship with his mother. Sebastien on the other hand, was skinny and pale. He tended to keep quiet and to himself. He was Leons favorite, because he stayed out of trouble. Both boys had the same color hair at this age, a reddish-blonde color and very puffy. Sebastien and Antoine never really got along. Antoine used their similar looks to play tricks on Sebastien and get away with it.
Sebastien was always a bright fellow and despised being confused with his less brilliant sibling. So, he tried to bleach his hair at age 8. Unfortunately, the bleach had a similar effect as chlorine and his hair was tinged green. Oddly enough, Sebastien loved this hair color since green is his favorite color. Angella thought otherwise. After much protesting, they managed to dye his hair a natural blonde color. Yet, clever Sebastien was able to maintain a streak of his trademark green hair, which Angella loathes to this day. Sebastien also let his hair grow out into a ponytail which made him completely different from Antoine, whose hair is under the rule of Queen Angella.
Seven years later, the boys are 12. (For those with mathematical incompetence. Dont feel badIm in the same boat as you). Much like the medieval times, nobility and royalty had to be knighted. They started off as squires and learned the basics. They learned to ride, handle swords, archery, care of armor and equipment, as well as intellectual things like poetry, music, history, reading, and some sciences. Antoine is the atheletic one, now that his baby fat has built up into little muscles. Sebastien, while capable of performing the physical tasks, preferred to be more mentally sound.
The horse story. It is well known (or it will be) that Sebastien hates horses with a capital H. It also "spurred" him into persuing his studies more than his exercise. One fine spring day, Antoine and Sebastien took their ponies out on a ride into the woods. It was warm and sunny, the boys stopped for a swim in the woods. Before they knew it, dark was starting to settle in. Antoine, while putting his clothes back on, teased Sebastien about the creatures in the woods that came out in the dark. Sebastien was far from amused.
Antoine, in all sport, galloped his pony ahead, leaving his brother behind. Sebastien, naturally, didnt mind his brothers absence. He mounted his ride and proceeded carefully through the trees. However, Antoine, being somewhat cunning when coming to practical jokes, managed to circle from behind Sebastien, with Renard (Antoines fox familiar) barking at Sebastiens horses heels. Sure thing, Sebastien became upset and so did his pony. Antoine and Renard scampered away laughing. But now Sebastiens pony was jittery and it spooked at the first rustle. The pony abandoned Sebastien in a strange part of the woods.
Two days later, Antoine and the family found Sebastien again. This is why not only does Sebastien hate riding, but why he hates his brother. (Well, hate is too strong a wordmore like perpetually iritated). Antoine got a stern reprimand mind you, not even Angella would let that slide. J
Age fifteen, the two princes had to choose an order of knights to follow. Antoine chose the Order of the Rose, an order devoted to chivalry and courtly love. Ever, since Antoine could read, he would read legends of courtly love and old knightly stories. (You know the classic King Arthur stuff that managed to stick around). Angella was very thrilled since this field of knighthood would fit him like a glove. Another wonderful thing happens to Antoine at this point too. Yes, he discovers his manliness. (Dont get thinking perverted now thats not what I meanyou thought it didnt you. Shame on you. Eat a bar of soap now to clean out that dirty mind of yours). First girlfriend! (Thats what I mean. And no, he didnt "dishonor" her if THATs what you are thinking now. For Petes sake this is a clean story. Id never let Antoine do that). Yeah, first heartbreak too, poor fellow. (Cried for weeks poor thing).
Sebastien took a much different path. He chose the Order of the Quill, a sect of scholarly knights. This works nicely for him since he aspired to study the history of his kingdom and prepare for ruling. (Hes the brains of the family. And a total over-acheiver. Talk about all work no play). He took advantage of his brothers many heartaches in the years to come. He never indulged himself with romantic fantasies of any kind. Sebastien was depending on his mother to pick his bride or baby-factory in his mind. (I know, disgusting isnt he. Dont worryhe changes his mind by the time hes 18).
Thats all I have to share with you about the two boys. They are going to be one of the first duel kings in about 200 years. I hope this answers some questions and dagnabbit, it should prove I put thought into these characters. :P If you have any further questions about their pastI suppose you can email me or figure it out on your own time.
