(Rated M) Reviewed by Emma Stars: Tobey Maguire Kirsten Dunst Willem Dafoe James Franco Official Site Story Tobey Maguire plays Peter Parker, a dorky science genius at highschool, silently lusting over his (convenient) next door neighbour MJ (Kirsten Dunst) and constantly being the butt of all jokes, callously being taunted by schoolmates. All this changes when a genetically engineered spider bites him. All of a sudden, he�s buff, he loses the glasses, he can spin web from his wrists, crawl up walls and jump across roofs and more importantly his dress sense improves! And what does a 18 year old guy who finds out he can do all these fab things do? Why � save the world of evil of course!! Enter the villian. Peter�s best buddy, the rich delinquent, Harry�s (played by the luscious James Franco) pop. Yep the old man goes mental after testing out his scientific equipment, killing people willy nilly. Will spidey conquer his arch nemesis? Will spidey get the girl? Will spidey work out a way to have a pee through his costume? All these are answered (well except for the last one) in a fast paced (mostly) action packed (mostly) coming of age extravaganza. Critique The acting was pretty solid. The storyline was your typical boy falls in love with girl, boy turns into superhero, girl falls in love with superhero, girl goes out with boy�s best friend, superhero faces off with bad guy, bad guy�s son who is also superhero�s best friend swears revenge�. Yada yada yada�. What gave me the poops is this � A) Why doesn�t a supposed genius go to see a doctor after being bitten by a spider??? Its common sense wouldn�t you think? B) Why does every movie have to have the chick running around in a skimpy top in the rain. Its pretty damn cliched (of course so is this movie!) C) The green goblin�s plastic mask. Every close-up I was thinking �man that�s a crappy plastic mask� D) In addition to point C � Why does Willem Dafoe even need a mask � I mean the guy is butt ugly and looks like a goblin anyway! E) The postcard shot � Spidey with the American flag (gag) F) The weird out of place (in my opinion) scene where the people of New York start pelting the green goblin with food and things and declare �You mess with one of us � You mess with all of us�. Was this scene put in after Sept 11? It was mega contrived. Other than that, I quite enjoyed it! Its purely entertainment and doesn�t pretend to be anything other than that. The action scenes are mostly pretty cool. There are a couple of spots where the CGI looks fake, but on the whole it looks slick. Unfortunately, yet again I have to make mention of the cabbages in the cinema. People � if you can�t shut up and sit still for 2 hours, perhaps a cinema isn�t the best place for you. Take your damn conversations and have a coffee!!! Aaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrrrrgggggggghhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!! Score: 7/10 |
