The Story

AOTC is set 10 years after The Phantom Menace. The former Queen of Naboo, Padme Amidala (Natalie Portman) is now a Senator. Anakin (Hayden Christenson) is learning the ways of the force under the direction of Master Jedi Obi-Wan Kenobi (played by Ewan McGregor). Assassins are after Amidala and Anakin and Obi-Wan are instructed to ensure her safety. The two separate, Ani left to watch over Padme and Obi-Wan to track down the bad dudes out to get her. The dark side of the force gains strength as the separatists break away from the republic under the rule of Count Dooku. Anakin and Padme draw closer as the clone war begins.

Critique

In a nutshell I thought it was beyond fantastic. To give you some perspective on the type of star wars fan I am, I have seen the original trilogy a few billion times but am not to the obsessive stage of buying thousands of dollars of star wars merchandising (you know who you are!). I liked the Phantom Menace enough to see it twice at the cinemas and own it on video, but the more Ive watched it the more boring Ive found it. Attack of the Clones, I am happy to say, is shit loads better than Phantom Menace. Visually it is far far superior to anything I have ever seen. The action scenes were almost non-stop (made up for the lack of dialogue). The clarity of the CGIs were eye-popping and although I am a fan of the puppet Yoda, seeing him kick ass was soooo cool. Hayden Christensen was really good as the grown up Anakin (hope he doesnt suffer the fate of Mark Hamill coz he really was great). He was believable as the angst driven, arrogant Anakin. The development of the character was good, portraying him as conflicted and confused (and kinda unbalanced!) with the whole jedi/force stuff but caring and trusting in his love for Padme. Natalie Portman again was good as Senator Amidala, with the character showing many of the traits of Princess Leia (her daughter) from the original saga such as confidence and innocence. Ok that said, she does star in the crappest scene in the film I dont want to spoil anything but youll know it when you see it. And how they managed to have her end up in a midriff top in the last part of the film is beyond me! In my opinion the absolute star of the film was Ewan McGregor as Obi-Wan Kenobi. He totally stole the show. He completely owned the character. The chemistry between he and Anakin made the movie work. Like I mentioned earlier, the only thing I can really complain about is the lack of and in places dodgy dialogue. Especially, in the scenes with Anakin and Padme the romantic dialogue was chunky and almost laughable. Then there were sections of the film which were completely lacking in any dialogue and yeah ok the action was hella sweet but still. The romance angle did provide some light relief from the usual politics, fight, lightsabre, politics, more fighting etc etc. Another note should be made that the musical score was hella sweet too. To sum up all was good!

I would like to make comment on the cabbages (thanks to derek for the use of the word "cabbage") that sat around us. For christsakes people if you wanna chat through the entire movie wait till it comes out on vid and watch it at home. We pay to watch the film you freaks not listen to your inane uninformed constant ramblings. Also I think I will be starting the "No chips or lollie wrappers in cinemas" crusade.

Other than that -  AOTC rocked!!!!!!!!!!!

9/10
