These are the chords that I play for Black. Most of the chords are just variations of major chords. You gotta listen for the changes in the song because otherwise you won't get the changes right. This is the intro part, also used for the verses. You gotta also follow the strumming that he does. I'm just going to write the chords that he is strumming on. For the bridge there are only two chords. The first chord is C, I like to play first position C. Then the second chord is Emin, I also play first position Emin with F# on the first string. C C Emin :-------:------:-------:---2---:---- \ :---1---:--1---:-------:-------:---- \ :-------:------:-------:-------:---- \ AND REPEAT UNTIL CHORUS :---2---:--2---:---2---:---2---:---- / :---3---:--3---:---2---:---2---:---- / :---3---:--3---:-------:-------:---- / This is the Chorus. And just repeats itself. It is very simple, only three chords: Emin, D and C. I play these chords in first position also. Although, during the second chorus as it goes on you might notice that there is a slight variation. The only thing being done is that instead of going from C back up to Emin he is going from C up to D, back down to C, then up to Emin. It uses a dropped D tuning (low E down to D) The intro part is "holding down power chords and tapping on the fret board 12 frets higher with my index finger and pinkie, a la 'Spanish Fly'". Then the next part is Octaves, D and C# ----------------------------------------------------------- ----------------------------------------------------------- ---7----7----7----6----7----7----7----6-------------------- ----------------------------------------------------------- ---5----5----5----4----5----5----5----4-------------------- ----------------------------------------------------------- The Main lick is: ----------------------------------------------------------- ----------------------------------------------------------- ----------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------po--------------------------- -----------------------------2--0---ho--------------------- ---0--0--0--0--2--2--3--3----------2--3-------------------- This is all I know. The article transcribed the outro solo, too, but I don't have the time right now. It's pretty much a bunch of Wah Wah stuff with lots of bends on the 1st and 2nd strings simultaneously. Oh well, they sound virtually the same, but the second one's easier on an acousic. Well it is on _my_ acousitc :) For the 2nd chorus onwards, I think (listen to the song!), and in various places later, the bass plays : ----(12)--------(7)---------(5)---------(5)------ ------(12)--------(7)---------(7)---------(7)---- --10------\\\5------------7-----------7---------- 10----------------------7-----------7------------ The other guitar riff which crops up later is: ---------15------------------------- 17p15-------------17p15------------- ------16-------16-------16-16----16- Play This ------------------------------------ Part Twice ------------------------------------ ------------------------------------ ------------------------------------ 15---17---19b20b19---15--17--------- ------------------------------------ ------------------------------------ ------------------------------------ ------------------------------------ ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ This plays the second time round. Watching the SNL performance, this verified to me that I'm playing it at least close to right. I don't include any of the solos, but those are pretty simple... I also don't include any timings in the chord progression, since it's kinda repetitive anyway, and just listening to the song you should be able to figure out what is going on. During the 'verses', where I have (e f) in parenthesis, just pick those notes, not the chords (just lift your barre on the F#m to play the E note and the F note). This is what I call the "riff" below in the chord progression. It's the same fingering over and over, and the chord change during the riff is just moving the pattern up a step. All notes are 8th notes, at about 100-120 bpm. The first two notes (the fretted 'a' and the open 'a') seem odd, but if you listen to the album's intro, he's definately doing this, since the first two notes are not the same string. The \/ symbol below the tab is a hammer-on. All the rest of the notes are picked. I divide the riff into two parts, the first being part 'A' and the second being part 'B'. Part 'A' is played over the 'A' chord during the verses, part 'B' (when the chord changes during the riff) is played over the 'B' chord. Just play each part however many times it is in the song. As you will see, the riff is exactly the same pattern, moved up a step. It just jams. Get used to the basic E to D pattern of the riff, then make use of your own talent to spiff it up and play it like it sounds. This transcription is very basic to eleviate confusion when reading -- it gives you the basic "where-to-go." The song starts off by raking all the strings a couple of times and sliding an E chord down the neck to the E an octave lower. You may not be able to get the E to sound perfect; remember that Stone probably plays a full E chord when Mike plays the open strings B and E. For what i've labeled (A) in the tab.. you just fool around and play that little riff i gave.. no need to just play the same over and over again add little hammer ons and pull offs and different switches.. while the rhythm is basically just the chord A strummed over and over again listen for the timing.. sort of strum slow then fast then slow and let it linger through out the verses.. then when it gets to the transition on part (B) play D B(?) A C and then that little riff i gave. and thats about it.. until it changes to the "things were different then" part.. which is just G and A back and forth.(you can add little harmonics hammerons pull offs, whatever you like) here is the lyrics with chords.. this song isnt perfect.. words and tab I'm 17 years old and only been playing a year so don't expect much but when i play it..i think it sounds ok. *verse* A A A A Paint a picture Isnt all in gray A A A A light your pillow lay back watch the flames A A A A I'll tell a story but no one listens that long A A A A it's hard to imagine it's hard to imagine CHORUS (B) D B(?) Well, there you go! Transcribed by: Mike Baker *** Rockin In The Free World Neil Young I've posted this before, maybe it should be archieved in nevada. You can skip the instructions right into the lyrics/chords but note that Neil plays Em7 (add your pinky on the D on the second string) in the verses instead of the Em at the beginning of each line, and that he plays C and Cadd9 in the chorus instead the C here. Enjoy, ameen. This is the acoustic version of "Rockin' In The Free World" from Neil Young's "Freedom Album", 1989. This is a great song, (and the second one I ever learned), not difficult to play and a great strumming exercise for beginners (information is included about nearly every beat of the measure). INTRO and VERSES: ----------------- For the verses you basically need: Em, D and C but the strumming pattern and fretting actually involve a G. Here's how to strum the Em measure (intro and verse alike): Em | (1 + 2 + 3 + 4 +) DN UP DN UP DN UP DN UP B - $ $ - $ $ $ Meaning it is an Em chord for the whole measure, play only the bass note (the E string) on the first beat (indicated by the 'B' -from Bass- above), the '-' means don't strum on the strings and a '$' means play the chord indicated above (Em in this case). The D and C measure is strummed as follows: D N C N | | | | DN UP DN UP DN UP DN UP $ $ $ $ - $ $ $ Meaning play a D chord for the first beat then on the down stroke of the second beat hit the strings without any fretting (indicated by 'N' above), this would actually sound as a G (especially that you're most likely to hit only the D, G, B and E strings). Then directly play a C chord on the up-stroke of the second beat (in fact you'd ready your fingers for the C chord while hitting the "G chord"). The same trick is done at the last up-stroke of the 4th beat where you, again, play the open strings just before hitting the bass of the Em chord of the following measure (as indicated in the Em measure). CHORUS: -------- As for the chorus: it is G, D, C and Em which is easy to play: The 3 measures of G D and C are the same: G/D/C | DN UP DN UP DN UP DN UP $ - ($) $ - $ $ $ The ($) means optional. In fact you'd interleave all kinds of strumming patterns here. The last measure (4th) of each line in the chorus goes like this: C Em | | DN UP DN UP DN UP DN UP $ $ $ $ - $ $ $ Here you'd notice that in fact you'd naturally hammer on the Em on the upstroke of the 2nd beat. Between chorus and verses: --------------------------------- Basically 4 measures of A (interleaved with A7) anyways if you want to get a flavor of how it is played (read I play it ;-): 1) 2) A A7 A7 A A7 | | | | | DN UP DN UP DN UP DN UP DN UP DN UP DN UP DN UP $ - $ - $ $ $ $ - $ $ $ $ $ $ $ 3) 4) A7 A A7 A7 A | | | | | DN UP DN UP DN UP DN UP DN UP DN UP DN UP DN UP - $ $ $ $ $ $ $ - $ $ - $ - $ - The second time the bridge is played a different pattern is used but who cares (I'm tired of typing ;-). VERSION and NOTES: ------------------ 1) BTW I have 3 versions of the song, 2 electric (from Freedom and Weld) and one acoustic, this is the acoustic version from Neil Young's "Freedom" album. 2) Note though that he plays it by tuning all the strings one WHOLE NOTE down: (E A D G B E -> D G C F A D). Except this, he seems to add a D note on the second string when playing the Em making it an Em7 (or actually, in his tuning, a C note when playing Dm) but that's a minor detail and it sounds just beautiful with the Em. 3) The acoustic version has only 2 verses while the "plugged" ;-) ones contain one additional verse. I have included it here too. Sounds complicated? not really.
