Miran Cultural Information
Home
Yes, that's right, today we're talking about death customs for the Miran Confederation, the latest "reincarnation" so to speak of the Goon Empire; which is to say that all of the original cultural/political/historical data about the Goon Empire still applies, except that the entire continent sank into the sea and was replaced with another one that I liked better (translation: I drew a new map :-) ).

Anyway, that brief note aside, today we're answering the question posed by a conveniently fictitious person whom I do not have the creativity at the moment to name.

Person: So, what's up with those Mirans anyway? Suppose a guy gets killed in a freak peanut butter mishap; what happens?

Me: Well, it's interesting that you should ask that. As long as the person is more or less intact, as we can probably assume that peanut butter does not dismember (although you never know), the burial remains fairly similar. The deceased is clothed in their favorite clothes (or what is believed to be their favorite if this was not specified in a will as is the custom; the person, being dead, is obviously in no position to tell his buriers what his clothing preferences are) and placed in a coffin which is buried in the ground. Most religions in the Confederation practice interment although the preferred location may vary greatly - the Marat sect prefers individualized burials in the woods, while the Karun church operates group cemeteries in urban areas.

With slight variations, most major Miran religions practice a "friendship" ceremony at the time of interment. Each person present places a rock, bound with a colored ribbon, on the grave, and says "I was so and so's friend" and may relate a personal anecdote illustrating that friendship. The bigger and rounder the rock, the more deeply ran the friendship. Frequently, it also signifies the wealth of the giver. This custom has given rise to the expression "to be unstoned" meaning someone who has no friends or will not be missed. Similarly, an "unstoned person" is also someone who has no friends. It is considered very bad if someone dies unstoned, as their grave will be thus unmarked and unremembered.
