Congratulations are also in order for Riva, who has passed the Master Gardener class at the UC Extension program. Five months of classes and hard work have paid off.  Well done!  She can now call herself a Master Gardener.

Congratulations to Madeleine, who has been hired to work at
YCC in Huberdeau, Quebec as a junior counselor in Rocky Point Girls unit. She will spend her summer marshalling 7-year-olds.  Good Luck and Have FUN!

June  2006

June was a month of flux in our household.  Aaron returned home from Montreal, after completing a summer course.  Then Madeleine, Riva and Stephen left, all on June 18, Madeleine for Montreal, and her parents (separately) for England.  Riva flew via Oakland and Las Vegas, while Stephen took off direct from SFO.They met at Liverpool Street Station in London and took the train up to Norwich.  From there they flew to Edinburgh, then drove down to Leeds and back down to Norwich.  Then a quick  (less than 24 h) to Eire, and then back to Norwich and a train to London, during the heat wave at the end of June...
Trip to UK
Riva has been cycling this summer, starting at the end of March with the Cinderella Tour.  Then the Lodi Sunrise Century ( a real treat, starting from Lodi - a great excuse to visit), the Canyon Classic and the BBC Barbecue Ride.  No Napa Tour this year, because  she will be picking Madeleine up from the airport on August 20. Her goal has been to ride a century (metric) each month.  So far she has accomplished that.
This is a big month for our family, because Stephen and Riva are taking a vacation for the first time in many years.  They are off to Hawai'i, first to Maui to simply relax, and then to Oahu for the
Third Annual Hawai'i Classic Cup,
the over-40s  soccer tournament held in Honolulu.
Our vacation!
The cousins spent time at the cottage this summer.  Lucky families. Visits with the cousins
September   2006
In this month of jetstream changes,  our family fragments yet again.  Aaron is back at McGill University, in his own apartment, cleaning busily, Madeleine is now in her senior year, and Stephen is flying back and forth from the UK.  Riva is cycling, working up to Foxy's Fall Century yet again (the 100 mile version), with the Apple Cider Century Ride through the Russian River Valley.  She won't forget the Fort Ross climb in a hurry...!

Riva started working this month!  She applied for a post at the JFK Library in Vallejo and was hired. It's part-time work, considered temporary,  and involves helping the library staff behind the scenes.  And she loves it.   So much that she is thinking of returning to school...in library and information science.
A family life-cycle event took place on December 28, 2006 and Riva and Stephen were fortunate enough to attend!  It was the wedding(long-awaited at that!) of Jeffrey Samuel Selick and Naomi Perelman of Los Angeles.  And everyone (well, nearly everyone) was there!    Riva and Stephen (representing the Flexers) flew down the  morning of the wedding and stayed with Harriet and Uncle Sidney.  Riva got some pyracantha pruning in, with help from Uncle Sidney...
The evening was a real treat - an Orthodox wedding at the Sephardic Temple on Wilshire.  We all had a chance to reconnect with family and meet far-way cousins and new babies.  An absolute pleasure to meet the Bekhors of Milan in the flesh, to talk to Mark and Gloria again (after a wonderful supper in SF the past weekend).  Stephen talked at length with his cousin Elliot.     Lynn looked beautiful and vivacious, as did Ashira and Rivka Siegel, and Daneil was so handsome that night!  Dalia and Eliahu Siegel were also  there, as well as his sister Natalie and her family from New Jersey.  The bride's sister  Cheryl   flew in from Boston with her husband Matt as did Naomi's parents from Houston.
And the groom's parents, Tova and Larry?
They were just over the moon.    A wonderful time was had by all.
Mazel Tov!
Riva applied for the next level up in the Solano County Library System, and made the cut!  She started training for the post of LIbrary Aide, Extra Help, which will permit her to travel  with Stephen intermittently.  It'S a job at the Circulation Desk, and involves more people contact.  Very busy days ahead for her!
March 2007
Madeleine was accepted into  NYU, UC Davis, UC Santa Barbara, UC Santa Cruz, UC Irvine and  UC Merced.   She was adamant about her requirements for a  4-year school, and after visiting UC Santa Barbaraand UC Irvine one weekend on a crazy road trip with her mother, selected UC Santa Barbara.  Stephen and Riva will be empty nesters as of September 22, 2007.
She has also been accepted at YCC as a Senior Counselor, so she will be returning to Quebec for the summer.

Thelma and Ronnie, Stephen's parents, came to visit for six weeks  (May 21-July 4).  Ronnie fell ill three weeks into the trip, and spent most of the visit at the Internsive Care Unit of Kaiser Vallejo  (June 11 -July 5) on life support.  It was a terrible time for everyone. He recovered sufficiently to be flown back to the UK via air ambulance, while Thelma and Riva flew back on Virgin.  He has since recovered.

The cottage in St. Albans is undergoing major remodeling, with Alec and Will coordinating the work.  Gaylene and the children are enjoying the lake.
Riva's dog,
Lili  became critically ill at the end of the month with congestive heart failure, and was put to sleep on July 30. Riva is devastated.
