I arrived in Victoria on October 30th to visit a friend from Vanderbilt, Kevin Heisler. After a few intoxicating days my housemates at the time from Sydney, Cris and Jay, arrived in Melbourne for "The Melbourne Cup". Allow me to explain this event... Every fall there are horse races and everyone in the state gets the day off from work on the day of the Melbourne Cup race. The event is similar in stature to the Kentucky Derby and it is as hot in Melbourne as it is in Kentucky. On this holiday some Australians go to the races, most just go to the pub. My friends and I decided to go to the Melbourne Cup, for 2 of the 4 days... We had a few back to back rough days betting on horses. Cris came away up $350, the rest of us... Well let's say we didn't do as well. But although Cris won on his bets, he was certainly in the worst shape of us all when leaving Melbourne. Afterwards we drove the "Great Ocean Road" to the west of Melbourne. We then came back to "Wilson's Promontory". The landscape you will see here is amazing, "The 12 Apostles" are the bits of rock wall that lie along the coast... simply breathtaking. All in all you will see that I had a great time in Victoria. |
