Hailing from Jakarta,
Indonesia, Kekal is an extreme metal band formed back in August 1995
as a one-time project by two guys. Three months later they had a
chance to record a 4-song demo which now becomes a classic demo (20
people who got it should be proud!!). Also appeared in that session
is the distinctive sick vocals of Harry.
In January 1996, again,
they were gathered to record another few songs. They recruited a
female vocalist, Hana, to sing in one song. Unfortunately they were
not satisfied with this material because it's not aggressive enough
although it contains one strong song "Rotting Youth" which
became well-appreciated in the underground. The recording was never
officially released and sold. After that "unsatisfied"
session, there was a period of silence...
June 1996 was the month
of the return of Kekal. This "return" had never been
expected but it happened. Kekal became active again, but this time
with a vision and commitment. They remixed their first demo and with
some new material they released "Contra spiritualia Nequitiae",
their first actual demo-on-sale/ independent tape release. The demo
itself has got a good response from the underground as it contains
totally extreme and unique musical structures that have become
influential.
Some changes in line-up
appeared. With Harry on Vocals, Leo on Guitar, Jeff on
Guitar/Vocals, and Azhar on Bass/Vocals, Kekal continued to write
new material. Early in 1998, the first full-length album entitled
"Beyond The Glimpse of Dreams" is being released. First is
just on cassette format by a small Indonesian label THT Underground,
and later being re-released on both CD and cassette formats by
Singaporean label Candlelight Productions. Musically, they combine
the strong elements of black metal and death metal with a touch of
classic-metal, doom, gothic, and dark-wave influences which are
strongly present in some of their songs. "Beyond The Glimpse of
Dreams" has got very good reviews from 'zines around the world
and being considered as one of the best extreme metal albums ever
coming from Asian bands. After the re-release of the first album,
Harry left the band due to other commitments outside music. Kekal
remains as a three-piece band with Jeff and Azhar handle all the
vocal duties. Their 2nd full-length album called "Embrace The
Dead" was recorded and is being released in February, 2000,
which without a doubt will show every extreme metal lovers once
again, about the strength and uniqueness of Kekal's music.
One thing that is
important, they do not want to follow the current trend when it
comes to the music especially in the lyrical department. The lyrics
represent their attitude, faith, and vision.
