THYRFING: The Fourth Outrage is Imminent

THYRFING has always been my absolute favourite among all Viking Metal bands. Each of their albums is a brilliant gem of extreme but at the same time beautiful art. The band is going to release their new album "The Fourth Outrage" in early 2002. Some unexpected musical changes are promised. We'll see what the band members mean with this when the album is unleashed. But in the meanwhile check out what Patrik had to share with us. (Krasniy; 01.08.2001)

Greetings, Patrik! How are things currently going in THYRFING clan?

- At the moment we are very busy, reheaarsing and arranging the last material for the album. And of course enjoying the swedish summer with a lot of beer.

Have you already started recording your fourth album? Could you give us the details on this event? By the way, why did you postpone the recording session? You were supposed to start recording in May, weren't you?

- No, but we will start in September. WWe'll use Dug-Out Studio with producer Daniel Bergstrand this time. We have booked the studio for one month, so there will be plenty of time to make a worthy production! The reason that we postponed the recording, was simply that we couldn't get the material together in time.

Will there be any musical changes on "The Fourth Outrage"? Anything that would differ it from your previous outputs?

- Yeah, of course there'll be some minoor things which we've never done before, eventhough it will still sound like Thyrfing. I think some parts will surprise people, but I feel very enthustiastic about the material....you have to wait and see.

All of your full-lenght releases have been released via Hammerheart. Are you pleased with the way your collaboration with these is developing? By the way, have you signed a single contract in the beginning or you prolongate it every year?

- I don't want to talk about details on this matter, but we are satisfied at some points, and at some points, we are not. First we signed for one album, then another one, and the last contract was for two albums.

Looking back at your previous releases, which one of them is most appealing to you and why?

- I would say "Urkraft". It has the widdest sound, best production and most variation in the songs. But everything we have recorded has a certain charm to me...

THYRFING members are involved in numerous side-bands and projects. Could you reveal us some details on that? What about Henke's band WINDS, are they going to record a full-lenght somewhen soon?

- Henke, Thomas and Jocke play in Windss, which is a serious band (not a project). They play Death metal, and if you are curious hearing them, you can download their new promo in mp3-format at http://walk.to/winds. They are currently hunting for a worthy label I think... Kimmy plays in Hatework which is a Thrash-band in Pantera/The Haunted-style. Very good indeed. Me and Peter are only involved in Thyrfing.

Are you able to make a living on the money which THYRFING brings you. If not, then how do you earn it?

- Ha-ha-ha....not a chance. We don't maake any money on the music. And if we do, they disappears immediatly in some strange way... We earn our money from different jobs and from the government (like true parasites).

I wonder if you have any plans of visiting Eastern Europe sometime soon?

- At the moment, no. We have played in Hungary once and the crowd was awesome. So we would really like to play in eastern Europe again some day...

Are there any other Viking Metal bands in Europe that have your gratitude? By the way, how do you assess the last ENSLAVED album? Many characterize it as a total failure, what about you?

- Some great bards are: Bathory (of course), Enslaved, Falkenbach, Finntroll, Vintersorg... I can understand if the speedfreaks had a hard time swallowing "Mardraum", but I think it's an excellent piece of art. Ivar is the master.

I personally regard you as the best act on Hammerheart records. I wonder how you evaluate your label-mates, such as ANCIENT RITES, MACABRE, ALAS?

- Ancient Rites' new album really surprrised me....it's simply kills. Haven't listened too much to their older stuff to be honest, but what I heard wasn't convincing. Macabre could be fun, if you're in the mood for it... Alas then.... well, I don't have much to say about it. I think I fell asleep after three songs or something...

What music do you currently listen to? Any faves? By the way, are you into Norse Folk music? If yes, then how do you find HAGALAZ' RUNEDANCE and stuff like that.

- Currently Nile's "Black Seeds of Venggeance" is streaming out of my speaker....dangerous stuff definitely. I am listening to some scandinavian folk music yes, some appreciated bands are Garmarna, Folque, Hoven Droven, Tva fisk och en flask etc. Hagalaz' isn't folk-music but more ambient/shamanic stuff (Thanx, Pat! Now I know :) Ed.) ....and I like it, when I'm in the mood for it.

What creative plans besides your upcoming album do you guys have?

- Honestly, none...at the moment. (Hmmmm... That starts getting boring!!! Time to put an end to this. Ed.)

Any last words for our readers?

- Well, check out the new album, coming out in early 2002. Surf up at www.thyrfing.com for latest info. See you in Valhalla...
