AD PATRES "Batalii Nesfarsite"
Rating: 6/10

Black Metal has spread all around the globe. Followers of Norwegian Black Art can be found even in exotic countries nowadays. This time it is Moldova, a small agricultural republic located between Ukraine and Romania. AD PATRES specialize in raw BM a-la IMMORTAL circa "Pure Holocaust" with a slight addition of moldavian folklore elements and historical lyrics written in Russian, English and Moldavian (what a linguistic diversity, huh...). Production could be better, especially when it comes to the volume of drums, they're simply hard to hear and that's too bad, because the drummer seems to be a quite skillful musician. A few words about the vocals: high pitched rasp vocals sound nice, but the clean parts have fully disappointed me: out-of-key singing sounds purely comic. In spite of all the aforementioned drawbacks, "Batalii Nesfarsite" is quite a promising work, especially when it has to do with riffs and structures (check out the song "Seven Hurricanes Drift Towards The Battle", it gives that good old, longlost norwegian feeling). I think that AD PATRES have a bright creative future in Moldova (at least, I hope they do). If you are interested, try to order the demo-tape at [email protected] (Krasniy).

ARAFEL "Skazki Starogo Lesa"
Beverina prod
Rating: 7/10

Israel has never been notorious for its Black Metal bands. Judeo-christian propaganda is way too strong in those parts, thus there isn't much favorable soil for Black Metal progression. Anyway, Israeli underground is not dead at all and ARAFEL from Bat-Yam prove it. As far as I'm informed all the band's members are of Russian origin, being Russian (or ex-Russian) citizens. "Skazki Starogo Lesa" (by the way, this title means "Tales from the Ancient Forest" in Russian) is their debut demo-tape up-to-date, however it is brilliantly performed, professionally recorded and comes with a great outlay and package. In fact, ARAFEL's stuff can be regarded as technical BM, complemented by symphonic majesty and inspired by Slavonic paganism (weird paradox: Slavonic metal on Israeli lands). Featuring only four songs without any intros/outros, this demo-tape possesses such a rare element nowadays as conceptual wholeness, not even a trace of disharmony - every riff, passage, melody is well thoughtout and structured. "Skazki..." has got absolutely everything that could give ARAFEL the right to call themselves worthy: clear production, top-notch musicianship, sense of taste and good attitude. However, despite all of its advantages, this tape doesn't sound original at all. Don't take me wrong, I don't mean to call it boresome, but still it doesn't inspire me much; it simply lacks originality. Anyway, all BM fans out there, caring for good old Black Metal played in the southern vein, get in touch with the band and order your copy. Recommended. ARAFEL contact: [email protected]. (Krasniy)

BLOODSHED - "Laughter Of Destruction"
Rating: 9/10

Lately I read some reviews on this demo, categorizing it as a Death Metal effort. However, after having given "Laughter..." an in-depth listen, I can precisely claim that these Swedish warriors have zero to do with DM scene. What BLOODSHED offer is uncompromising fast-paced Black Metal, incorporating the most sublime and appealing elements of Swedish school. MARDUK circa "Nightwing" and good old DARK FUNERAL are the ones that immediately come to mind while listening this demo-tape. All songs here are quite variated despite their practically non-stop blastbeating tempo. The listener will find numerous acoustic and clean parts featured in almost every track and some special effects as well. I guess it's needless to mention that this demo possesses a crystal-clear production since it was recorded at the notorious Sunlight Studio. I've listened to "Laughter..." for about 10 times so far and I'm still high on it. It's amazing: these folks can create eerily astounding ambiences without even applying any synths and alike stuff. Just those grim trollish vocals in accompaniation with harsh and highly skillful guitarwork. I highly recommend "Once a Future Might", "Scythe - Blade of Destruction" and "Segerstrid" tracks. These ones are impeccable. Not more, not less. This tape's only drawback is its "funny" cover artwork. By the way, BLOODSHED will soon release their new material in the shape of 7" EP via Lithuanian Ledo Takas productions. I can't wait to get that one. Hope the guys will find a decent artist to design their cover. That's all I had to say. Grab this one, you won't be disappointed. It rules supremely. Band contact: [email protected] (Krasniy)

BRAG-FLASHLAMP - demo '00
HMW distribution
Rating: 5/10

BRAG-FLASHLAMP play non-conformist grindcore a-la AGATHOCLES. This demo-tape features 5 tracks of intense and mostly fast-paced musical violence captured in just 10 minutes. I assume their lyrics deal with politics or alike stuff. However, I can only guess since they are written in Japanese. Even the song-titles are not translated into English (that was quite indiscrete indeed). Other drawbacks are this tape's layout and poor production. However, all instruments are still distinguishable. Recommended to grind fans. Band contact: [email protected]. (Krasniy)

BURIAL SHADES "To the Fleshes of My Livid Everything"
Rating: 9/10

BURIAL SHADES come from the Northern "capital" of Russia, St. Petersburg. Unfortunately, I haven't heard many extreme acts from that region; at the moment I can recall only of AZEROTH, EXHUMATION, and a few worhtless BM-like formations with awful sound, primitive "music", pathetic image and senseless lyrics, whose names don't even deserve to be mentioned on the pages of Fortitude zine. Anyhow, the reviewed band proves to stand out drastically of this mass. This demo CD-R features 5 tracks with overall playing lenght of 40 minutes. The first track starts with an atmospheric and impregnated interlude possessing a weird but at the same time majestic feeling which later transforms into obscure and sophistically orchestrated blasphemic Doom/Black Metal with an unspeakable ambience and true epic feel. The fact that most impressed me is the presence of almost palpable black aura in every second of each song; aura, which embraces every cell of listener's mind and soul. What I mean is that "To the Fleshes..." causes an ample gamma of genuine emotions; such as horror, anxiety, melancholy, sadness, hate and fear. It is obvious that such inspirative spiritual background is extremely rare in the over-populated dark musical realm, where copycats copy copycats. This band's music strike as unique in terms of originality. Unfortunately, this release is not deprived of minor faults. For instance, the production is obviously incoherent and lacks a firm professional approach, nevertheless I don't mean to call it poor. However, the majestic ambiental parts, which are present on every track sound purely impeccable. Anyhow, the inference for this effort is the following: "To the Fleshes..." is without a trace of doubt an essential piece executed by highly talented, intellectual and skilled musicians. It features extraordinary material and unorthodox concept (which I still haven't fully understood). Perhaps, the best characterization for this demo would be "the soundtrack to post-armageddon period on Earth". It perfectly fits this degree. I hope that BURIAL SHADES will remaster it and then rerelease it on a worthy label. Their music will doubtlessly be noticed in the worldwide underground. It feels good to see that true creative talents in metal music are not yet depleted. Definitely one of the strongest metal bands in Russia. Band contact: [email protected] (Krasniy)

CERNUNNOS! "The Horned One" demo
Rating: 10/10

Words are useless here. This demo captures 2 tracks of top-notch exciting symphonic Black Metal with irrepeatable atmospheres and enchanting riffs. Features members of ACHERON, LILITU (Adina Blase) and BENIGHTED (Demoniaque). Melancholy, battle spirit, majesty: it's all here. Quite reminiscent to the best works from BENIGHTED debut album. I am enchanted. Get your copy at once! [email protected] (Krasniy; 23.02.2002)

CHARNEL HOUSE "Sample Of Murder" demo
Rating: 7/10

CHARNEL HOUSE have been in the scene for more than a decade so far. They managed to unleash a great quantity of demos and full-lenght releases since then. Not sure about the previous ones, but the reviewed effort is doubtlessly original. Have you ever heard a blend of Death Metal with Thrash and Alternative Rock (the latter term mostly deals with a part of riffs)? I assume, most of you haven't. Anyhow, this 5-track demo is totally bombastic! Check out the tracks "No Reason to Die" and "Dance of the Dead". They are definitely the strongest ones on this release. I guarantee that you won't get bored while listening. Let's pass on to the faults now. I can't say that I admire Mr. King's weird style of singing. The usual growls would fit much better here. One more negative comment: although the promo-sheet calls CH's drummer unbelievable, Mr. Gonzalez doesn't prove to fit this format. However, his drumming style is still very decent, not too varied though. All in all, "Sample of Murder" is a damn fine and exciting (the most appropriate word in this context) output. Highly recommended to all TERRORIZER and PRO-PAIN fans. Band contact: [email protected] (Krasniy)

COMPOS MENTIS - "Quadrology of Sorrow" demo
Rating: 9/10

A fine act coming from Denmark. This perfectly designed and executed demo CD features four tracks of emotional death metal a-la early IN FLAMES. Excellent material and production. The band is now signed to US Lost Disciple records. COMPOS MENTIS contact: [email protected] (Krasniy; 09.11.01)

COVEN CURSE "Hard Eternal Death" demo
Rating: 4.5/10

Three words prove to be more than enough to give a full description of this effort: "Black as fuck". It really is that way. Two tracks of violent Black Metal in the vein of JUDAS ISCARIOT and good old DARKTHRONE fully meet this classification. However, there's a thing that keeps intriguing me about this demo and numerous french BM acts as whole. I always wonder how come so many french bands have such an awful sound??? Their material is never too weak, but the production is often way too low even for demo quality. By the way, MALESANCTUS and DEVIANT (both reviewed here) can serve as an undisputable example of such technical scarcity. Anyhow, a small discount can be given to COVEN CURSE since "Hard Eternal Death" is these guys' first demo. [email protected] (Krasniy)

COVEN CURSE "Evil Rise" demo
Rating: 8.5/10

Huge progress of the band's development is represented on this output. Basically, COVEN CURSE still keep to their line of aggressive Black Metal. However, a notable move-ahead in all evolutional directions is evident. Riffs became much catchier and complexive, as well as the improved drumming techniques. And what is most important, the overall sound quality has seriously improved this time. These guys have surely grown! I assume that all true BM fans would be glad to inspect this skull-crushing four-track effort. [email protected] (Krasniy)

CROWHEAD "Love Letter" demo CD-R
Rating: 9.5/10

What a fine example of musical art these Norwegians have unleashed! CROWHEAD was started by the members of SHADOW DANCERS and RAGNAROK and this demo is the band's "first sign of life" as the promo-sheet says. Truthfully, "Love Letter" is not directly tied up to Metal genre. I would more likely classify this release as a progressive gothic effort. Every track on this demo possesses its unique and specific character. This element was the most appealing for my ears while listening. The production is at top-notch level as well as the musicianship. I hope CROWHEAD will find a worthy label shortly and will release their debut CD as soon as possible. I'm eager to hear it. Highly original stuff for open minded individuals. Contact:[email protected] (Krasniy)

DARKENDOME "odlazak hegemon kopna" promo CD
Old Pervert Goat
Rating: 9/10

This Croatian act was formed upon the ashes of the defunct Death Metal band NATURAL DISASTER. Although I know nothing about ND, I can assume that it was a worthy formation, since its ex-members show a piece of excellent work on "odlazak hegemona kopna" ("Departure of the Hegemon of the Lands"). Coming with unpretentious artwork and exquisite design, this promo CD contains 3 songs of melancholic synth-spiced Black Metal performed in accordance with old-school BM traditions and possessing an unrepeatable unholy spirit. This six-piece managed to capture musical beauty in its most obscure and dark forms. Each song features a diversity of passages varying from sad and melancholic ones to fiercely grim and evil. It's like a blend of the best moments of early DIMMU BORGIR with the most relentless passages of GORGOROTH (circa "Under the Sign of Hell"). I should especially mention the musicians' sincerity in bringing their musical message forth (this element can be sensed from the very first moments of this effort) and genuine underground feeling present on this CD. All lyrics are written and sung in Croatian. However, their english equivalent is provided in the promo-sheet. Vocals vary from inhuman shrieks to clean declamations. The element that comes as minorly dissapointing is the flat sound of drums. Keyboards would also sound more impressive if they were mixed higher. Anyhow, the aforementioned drawbacks don't spoil the unique atmosphere of this release at all. It is obvious that DARKENDOME's debut full-lenght will be even more inspiring. Hope to hear it soon. Bands like this are rare in the contemporary underground scene. Contact the band at [email protected] (Krasniy)

DEAD TO EARTH - demo CD-R 2001
Rating: 7/10

DEAD TO EARTH is a one-man project from the US, which is conducted by James Butcher (also in GHASTLY SECRET and RAISED IN MEAT). Featuring about 70 minutes of music, this CD-R captures the material from several D.T.E. (ex-SECLUDERE) demo tapes, which were previously issued in few copies only. You won't find any synths and alike effects here. However, each track sounds extremely atmospheric in the coldest and most misanthropic way. Each moment is soaked by the feeling of isolation, hate and depression. It actually gets pretty melancholic in some parts. The track list is diversified by several instrumental tracks, which only deepen the atmosphere of ultimate sadness. "Dimensions of Woe" is the most obvious example of such tendency. If you are into acts like JUDAS ISCARIOT, early GRAVELAND and ABRUPTUM than you'll surely like this one. I would like to give a special mention to the unusual manner of lyric writing: they are sophistically depressive and totally anti-human. I guess that anyone into raw Black Metal and willing to revive that desperate spirit of early ninetees in his heart, shouldn't miss this demo. Its only minus is that you'll have to deal with poor production for which I dropped 3 points, but it's not that bad after all. Check out some DIMMU BORGIR or THE KOVENANT stuff if you are looking for some crystalized sound. Nothing more to say. Email:[email protected] (Krasniy)

DEVIANT "Defunct & Infected"
Dae Mortiis prod
Rating: 6.5/10

French Black Metal scene keeps rising and growing, confining numerous neophyte BM bands such as the reviewed DEVIANT. As far as I know "Defunct & Infected" is their second demo so far, featuring a few rehearsal tracks. DEVIANT disrupt our ears by the means of fast-tempo unholy Black Metal with obscure Satanic attitude and great underground feeling. Not too original at all, however, not boring. Each track on this tape is simply soaked up with darkness, hate and coldness; no keyboards, no special effects, just high-tune buzzing guitars, relentless rhytm-section complemented by hysterical rasp high-tone vocals. Now a few words regarding production: the instruments could be mixed better - drums sound too low, as well as the voice. There is also a constant irrelevant noise-background, which kept bothering me every second while listening to this demo. That is doubtlessly a major drawback. I would have given "Defunct..." a "9" rating, if the production and overall sound were better, but since it's executed at amateurish level, "6.5" is the best I can give. I truly hope that the next DEVIANT's release will feature better production and sound quality, since the artistic side of this band is undeniably great. Band contact: YHRM. Worth checking out. (Krasniy)

DROHM - "The Oracles of Darkened Time" promo
Rating: 7/10

The band characterizes their music as "Chaotic Blizzard Metal". Speaking in categoric terms, "Oracles..." features 15 minutes of fast-paced Death/Black Metal. Obviously, Black parts prove to be dominative. This stuff is worthy, so I guess that early IMMORTAL fans will praise it. DROHM contact: [email protected] (Krasniy; 03.08.2001)

ELENIUM - Promo 2001
Rating: 7.5/10

Relatively softer stuff than their "This Side of Paradise" MCD (check out "Album Reviews" section for that one). Fewer Swedish Death Metal influences. Though, CoF inspired elements are obvious. This statement is related to the massive abundance of gothic synth/piano passages and melodies. Anyhow, this is still Black Metal and definitely not as wimpy as the aforementioned CRADLE OF FILTH. I like this stuff and I do hope this band will soon unleash their debut full-lenght. Worthy. Contact these guys if you feel like purchasing this effort: [email protected] (Krasniy; 06.06.2001)

ELSEWHEN "Gates of Time"
Rating: 9/10

ELSEWHEN - Metal band hailing from the holy lands of Ellada. It took more than a month for this CD-R to arrive, but it was definitely worth the wait. "Gates of Time" demo features five tracks of brilliant TRUE Power Metal in the vein of the best works by STRATOVARIUS, IRON MAIDEN, MANOWAR and alike bands. I would like to underline the musicianship on this CD. All ELSEWHEN members definitely are great musicians, especially when it comes to guitarwork. Stavros, rhytm and lead guitarist, is a pure genius in solo and harmony arrangements. Vocals also sound quite pleasing. The artistic side of this release does't have any drawbacks, it's brilliantly played and performed, but the production could be better. It lacks intensity, rhytm guitars and bass sound is too weak and thin. That is why I gave 9 out of 10 to this release. Anyway, the production didn't bother me too much while listening. All true metal fans out there, get this stuff. It's truly worthy! ELSEWHEN contact:[email protected] (Krasniy)

GREAT VAST FOREST "Where the Warriors Ride"

One of the best Brasilian hordes nowadays. GREAT VAST FOREST attack in this demo-tape with a furious Barbarian Black Metal. "Where the Warriors Ride" is composed of 3 hymns with very agressive and furious vocals with some keyboard parts. The graphic artwork of these southern warriors is pretty notable. (Adson)

HORDES OF NEBULAH - Promo Anno 2001 C.E.
Rating: 6/10

United States keep conceiving more and more Black Metal acts. H.O.N. are the newcomers in the scene (formed in 1999). The reviewed promo represents a compilation of several tracks taken from the band's precedent demo efforts. What the listener can find here is primitive fast-paced Black Metal with Satanic background. The worthiest song must be the instrumental "On the Night of Wind and Storm" which brightly shows the band's capacity of composing highly exciting riffs and themes. It's a decent release in terms of material and production; only guitars sound too thin. The most notable drawback, however, is the insufficient technical skill, a feature which is characteristic for almost every musician in the band. I hope the guys will improve their playing skills in the future since their material, as I mentioned above, is simply great. Basically, this promo doesn't reveal new horizons in BM realm. Although, it will be found appealing by numerous BM puritists out there. Band contact:[email protected] (Krasniy)

HORDES OF NEBULAH / NARGOTHROND - "The Death of Light" split demo tape
Rating: 4.5/10

Here we have a split demo-tape of two US Black Metal bands, recorded back in 1999. You can inspect the review on HON's 2001 promo above. As far as I'm concerned about NARGOTHROND, this band has already changed its name. Possibly, it was due to the fact that there's a NARGOTHROND in Russia. Anyhow, this tape features some worthy material coming from both bands with some inspiring riffs and atmospheres here and there. However, totally incomprehensive production ruins all emotions. The fact that gladdens me is that HON managed to notably improve their sound. Don't know about NARGOTHROND (now NAUGLATH) though. For diehards only. Contact:[email protected](Krasniy; 19.05.2001)

INSISION - Promo 2000
Rating: 7/10

I admit I knew nothing about this Swedish band besides the fact that they specialize in Death Metal. The material on this tape proved my expectations: this is pure Satanic Death Metal with low-tone vocals and grinding blasts. Despite their Swedish origin INSISION don't practise Swedish-school Metal. They are more likely into US-style DM. Most obvious reminiscense is INCANTATION. Check this promo if you enjoy American Death Metal. Band contact:[email protected] (Krasniy; 18.07.2001)

INTERVALLE BIZARRE - Promo 2000
Rating: 5/10

Ultra-blasting Death Metal with obvious industrial influences. Great production, worthy musicianship, pounding intensity. Features a raw TERRORIZER cover. Might inspire someone, but not me. Band management contact: [email protected] (Krasniy; 30.06.2001)

KARNARIUM - "Breaking the Manacles of Malkuth" demo
Rating: 3.5/10

Brutal Death/Grind from Sweden with some occult/satanic lyrics. Four tracks, awful sound, poor production and ultimately repulsive appearance (I've never seen a demo-tape, designed so terrifyingly repulsive, before) are the most obvious elements of this debut demo. Although, I still managed to trace some exciting patterns through all that chaotic chorus of incoherent noises. These guys should work hard on their musicianship an especially - production, which was also subdued by the decrepit equipment these boys used during the recording session. One more thing, I don't care about it much, but the guitarist/vocalist should do something about his nickname (I bet he'd prefer it to be called "pseudonym"). You wanna know how it sounds? OK, it's "Funeral Whore"... Comic, isn't it? I guess, "Funeral Slut" or "Funeral Bitch" come as much grimmer. No offence, pal (sorry, I don't know your name and I don't want to call you "Funeral Whore"), I didn't mean to insult you or whatever, but you should change your monicker, since it unavoidably will be laughed upon. Contact Funeral Whore, if you are interested:[email protected] (Krasniy; 3.06.2001)

KHARON - "The Fullmoon Curse" demo
Neodawn Productions Germania
Rating: 8/10

And once again we have a Neodawn release here. KHARON is a Norwegian band, featuring two members of RAGNAROK (Nor). This demo includes three tracks of extremely tight and obscure Black Metal. The vocals are doubtlessly the strongest side of this output: being very deep and juicy, they add some Death Metal atmosphere. The only element, which annoys me here is the fact that guitars sound too low and seem to muffled by the rhytm-section. All in all, a fine underground release for all BM fans. [email protected] (Krasniy; 09.11.01)

LEGACY - s/t demo
Rating: 7/10

LEGACY hail from Boston, being the representatives of so-called USBM trend. The reviewed demo is their debut release to date. Featuring only three tracks, this CD-R offers 13 minutes of desperate mid-tempo Black Metal with occasional synth touches somehow reminding of early BURZUM. The overall impression about this demo is merely positive, however there are some evident drawbacks that cannot be unmentioned. I still can't get why the drums are mixed so low on the second track, as well as the vocals on the same track, which sound too high. Regarding the artistic side: sometimes it may seem monotonous (not boring), but I guess it's the matter of personal taste. Taking into consideration the fact that this is the first demo, I should say it's quite a successful one. It's worth checking. By the way, Arcadia prod is up to release the remastered version of this demo in the shape of 7". Contact the band to find out more about Boston BM scene. [email protected]. (Krasniy)

LIFEND "Entwined Emotions" demo
Rating: 8/10

This young Italian act (however, most of its members are quite aged judging by the band pics) managed to blend gothic atmosphere and traditional aggression of Death Metal in its debut (?) demo. I believe that this band will be found appealing by GRAVEWORM and MYSTIC CIRCLE fans. As for me, I enjoyed "Entwined Emotions" as well despite the fact that I dislike the aforementioned acts. Band contact: [email protected] (Krasniy; 22.01.2002)

LORD VESPER "When The Land Dies" demo
Rating: 4/10

If I'm not mistaken, "When The Land..." is the 2nd demo work of this Moscow based one-man project. Musically this effort can be described as ultra-minimalistic ambient. In terms of concept LORD VESPER is definitely a NS- oriented project. Unfortunately, the production is completely absent, which seems to be the main drawback of this demo tape, since the material itself is quite exciting. For true radical Russian patriots only. Contact: [email protected] (Krasniy; 22.01.2002)

LUFTWAFFE "International Condemnation"
Rating: 8/10

First of all, it needs to be mentioned that LUFTWAFFE is an extremely unordinary formation. This statement is in the first place associated with the ideological concept this American duet promotes. The main pattern of LUFTWAFFE's foreground is a certain philosophical trend named Solipsism. If you aren't familiar with the main ideas and goals of this movement, you should consult a dictionary of philosophical terms. As it goes for me, I myself am not a huge follower of the aforementioned ultra-radical doctrine, which, however, managed to gain a cult status in certain French intellectual circles of the 17th century. Anyhow, I do share some of the solipsist views. Enough digressions; the music anticipates to be described. "International..." is one of the first demos of this Chicago-based act and represents a soundscape of ambient/industrial ink with a firm ideological basis as it is mentioned above. Strong emphasis is done on acoustic guitars and sampling. This demo is more than appropriate for relaxing to in some of its parts ("The Cross of Lorraine"), sometimes it brings forth feelings of anxiety ("Killkorps", "The Iron Cathedral"), but what is essential: it never leaves you disinterested. However, some might remain disappointed in several aspects. By the way, how do you like such song-titles as "Killkorps" and "O.S.S. Marschleid", the latter being a reworked version of the notorious fascist hymn? I still do not see what kind of connection solipsism may have with nazi Germany. Perhaps, it's that arrogant and puritist attitude towards all. Anyhow, LUFTWAFFE members claim they have nothing to do with Nazism. I do hope they don't. I assume all DEAD CAN DANCE and alike acts' fans will be curious to inspect this CD-R. By the way, the cover artwork is morbidly original. Band contact: [email protected] (Krasniy)

LUFTWAFFE "The World That is Lost"
Rating: 8/10

Not too many changes on this one in comparison with "International..." despite the fact that "The World..." is considerably shorter (2 tracks; approximatively 10 minutes playing lenght). It's still the same type of ambient stuff spiced up by some cool varying vocals, industrial-like samples and an uncompromising ideological approach. This CD-R comes in great package and still with an outstanding cover artwork. If I'm not mistaken, it's the latest LUFTWAFFE output so far. However, the guys are already (April, 2001) in the process of recording their full-lenght debut entitled "Solipsist Nation". As for now, this demo is still available. [email protected] (Krasniy)

MALESANCTUS "Emen Hetan Sargatanas"
Rating: 6/10

One more BM release coming from France. MALESANCTUS is a relatively young band hailing from Bourg-La-Reine. "Emen..." features 7 studio tracks plus 2 live tracks ("Evoke The Goat" and "Legions of Umbakrail") recorded at a show in Bullion. The guys characterize their style as "Hateful Black Metal" and they are 100% right about this: MALESANCTUS specialize in raw, uncompromising fast-paced Satanic Black Metal with NS background. It is too bad that the production on studio tracks is totally incomprehensible and unlistenable. However, live tracks strike as killer ones. "Emen..." would have had a much higher rating if it were better produced, but for the current moment, 6/10 is the best I can give. Band contact: [email protected] (Krasniy)

MANDYLION (ex-SOULSICK) - "Illumination" demo CD-R
Rating: 10/10

I don't know the reason which caused these folks to change their monicker, but anyway, the current one suits much better for the band's outfit. Once again, this is a blend of alternative Metal with late THE GATHERING. The band has greatly evoluted since their previous demo (see SOULSICK review below) in both musical and technical contexts. Highly enjoyable female vocals, relaxing melodies, faultless production and what is essential - an irrepeatable atmosphere of slight sadness, which touched my very soul. The opening track "Sore You" is the best that I heard this month. Label-bosses, get this band signed!!! Doom/Alternative Metal freaks, order this demo at once. It will give many hours of spiritual harmony. A stunningly talented act. Band contact: [email protected] (Krasniy; 07.06.2001)

MIND ECLIPSE - "In The Light of Eclipse Coming" demo
Rating: 7.5/10

This young act hails from Yaroslavl, Russia. This demo tape features 10 tracks of underproduced furious Black/Death Metal with harsh vocals and synth insertions, slightly reminding of ABIGOR's demoworks. All in all, quite an enjoyable output musicwise. However, badly handled sound quality does not contribute to the attractivity of this tape. The guys from MIND ECLIPSE promise a better engineered next work. Time will tell. [email protected] (Krasniy; 08.11.01)

MITHRAS "Dreaming in Splendour"
Rating: 9.5/10

To say that it's an undescribable pleasure to review "Dreaming in Splendour" is to say nothing. I'm more than glad to see that the contemporary underground scene is still able of spawning such splendid efforts. From the very beginning I knew that MITHRAS were a Death Metal band from UK with a specific musical approach reminding of MORBID ANGEL's creations. The audition, however, beat all my expectations greatly - it was far beyond of what I'd anticipated. Yes indeed, MITHRAS sound very much in the vein of mid-era MORBID ANGEL (circa "Domination"). However, it is strictly inadmissible to regard these guys as imitators, since they still sound ten times more fresh and exciting than hundreds of other bands that took after MORBID ANGEL musically. All in all this demo captures everything that is necessary for an output to be characterized as excellent: relentless rhytm-section, low-tuned pounding guitars with appropriately positioned solo parts, top-notch production (it sounds way too clear for a demo effort, by the way), epic lyrics and traditional juicy growling. The only element that lets down here is the short playing lenght of only 13 minutes. Get in touch with the band and show them your support. These guys break all bounds. [email protected] (Krasniy; 19.05.2001)

MOLOCH "Desecrating Holy Grounds" demo '00
Rating: 2/10

Another neophyte BM act from the US. This starts to annoy me. I guess it's useless to describe the audial content of this CD, since it simply does not deserve it. All in all, a pathetic attempt to sound a-la early BURZUM. Sucks massively. (Krasniy; 22.01.2002)

MORIA "Nocte"
Rating: 10/10

I've had quite a long wait expecting this demo CD to arrive and finally, after two months of anticipation I finally discovered MORIA's "Nocte" demo in my mailbox. Doubtlessly, the wait was definitely worth the result. MORIA is a four-piece act originating from Sweden. Very original stuff can be found on this demo: basically, this is fast-paced atmospheric Black/Death Metal with minor Doom influences. I remained very, very pleased with what I heard on "Nocte": raw Norwegian-school riffs, mesmerizing harmonies, juicy strong vocals, beautiful clean female sopranos, speedy drums and true underground feeling. Despite the fact that there aren't any keyboards present on this demo (except some touches on "Evighetens Morker"), the overall atmosphere is overwhelming. MORIA will impress even the most sophisticated metal fans. Without any hesitations I gave "Nocte" the highest rating possible. Contact the guys at [email protected](Krasniy).

MORIA "Skogsfrun" promo CD
Rating: 8.5/10

This is the second MORIA release rated in our zine. Once again they prove to be worthy: this 10-minutes long CD comes in an original package and great appearance, however the outlay is not essential, music is. Doubtlessly, MORIA have drastically progressed since "Nocte": the production on this promo is splendid (much better than on the previous release), as well as the musicianship that got even better on this effort. We still can hear female chants and grunting vocals by Jesper, but the guys added a great number of new thingies, such as flute melodies here and there, majestic symphonic orchestrations, some samples and other stuff. Most of the time the music is mid-paced, but there are some ultra-fast and violent passages, somehow reminding of early DISSECTION. Unfortunately, the underground spirit that dominated on "Nocte" is irrecuperably lost, possibly due to perfect sound or the high amount of synths/acoustic tunes and by my opinion, it's a loss. Anyway, "Skogsfrun" is an undeniably strong release and MORIA deserve a favorable deal with a worthy record label. (Krasniy)

MUTINY "Faded Pages"
Rating: 10/10

This release is a true masterpiece and undeniable testament to such Metal Masters like BLIND GUARDIAN and RUNNING WILD. Hey, is it the greek climate that makes all bands hailing from this region so brilliant and talented? This demo tape has got anything anyone would ever need: excellent production, jawdropping musicianship, sonorous vocals by Kostas Makris (SWAN CHRISTY) and Alexis Balakakis (SPITFIRE) and simply great and POWERful music. I wonder why "Faded Pages" is not a full-lenght album, it is simply way too damn good for a demo CD. I am stunned. Get it at [email protected](Krasniy).

MUTINY "Guilty as Charged"
Rating: 9/10

And again MUTINY strike with a power metal blast. This time it is a promo CD dated 1999. "Guilty as Charged" does not differ much from its forrunner: same great production, excellent Metal, great lyrics. I would like to give a special mention to the cover artwork. The artist must be a genius. The reason why I gave this promo "9" instead of "10" is that there are only two songs on this CD. I am impatiently waiting for the debut CD "Muted" which will be out in September on Steel Gallery Records. [email protected](Krasniy)

NECROFLESH - Promo 2000
Rating: 5/10

This Italian one-man (?) band is a side project of Matt from HORRID (check out the review on their recent MCD in "Album Reviews" section). This is also Death Metal, but much darker and more intense than the aforementioned HORRID. Sounding like a cross of contemporary DEICIDE with early HYPOCRISY, this tape features 3 tracks, recorded in autumn, 2000. This stuff is fairly executed and recorded. Some riffs are memorable. However, you'll always have the feeling that you've heard these tracks for many times a long while ago. And that's the most unappealable thing on this promo. It lacks originality and spirit. Those, not looking for it, won't be disappointed. Band contact: [email protected] (Krasniy; 3.06.2001)

NECROPLASMA - s/t demo
Neodawn Productions Germania
Rating: 10/10

This is the third demo of this Swedish trio. Unfortunately, I haven't heard their previous outputs, but this one is definitely worthy. "Necroplasma" demo contains four tracks of grim, raw and fucking dark old-school Black Metal. The music is 100% fast-paced and straightforward, so you won't get bored if you aren't deaf! This demo rules supremely. [email protected] (Krasniy; 08.11.01)

NEFARIUM "Nefarium '99 demo"
Rating: 5/10

This relatively young (formed in 1997) three-piece act hails from the outlying region of Aosta (located in Italy). This demo seems to be their first one so far. NEFARIUM follow the dark path; their music represents violent fast-paced black metal with chaotic riff and rhytm structures, vicious rasp vocals, weird atmosphere and satanic lyrics (by the way, written in Latin). Imagine a blend of IMMORTAL "Battles in the North"-era, DARK FUNERAL circa "Vobiscum Satanas" and EVOL of "Ancient Abbey" times. That is what NEFARIUM is about, but to give you the full idea on this release I should mention all of its drawbacks. These are: short playing lenght (basically, there are only two tracks present here), awful production, poor musicianship, artificially sounding drum-machine, lack of any originality and sometimes childish attitude (I still can't get the point of indicating the members' age in the promo sheet). However, this release is worth listening to if you don't care much about such elements as originality and professionalism. NEFARIUM do have an artistic future, but this band should work hard and improve their technical skills in order to get a favorable record deal. Contact the band's management for the demo if you are interested: [email protected] (Krasniy)

NOIR - "Manifestation" demo
Rating: 6/10

This young one-man project comes from the U.S. "Manifestation" is the first NOIR demo-tape, featuring three tracks of overall lenght of 15 minutes. The music represents a cross of early BURZUM and EMPEROR circa "Wrath of the Tyrant". As you see, this tape strikes as quite grim. The creative side of this effort is utterly impressive. Especially it goes for the third instrumental track entitled "Storm". I also liked those weird, tortured vocals. I am not familiar with the lyrical concept, but the song titles insinuate something totally mysterious and obscure. Unfortunately, this demo is not perfect in terms of production and musicianship. Nidh, the one behind NOIR, should acquire more guitar-handling skills, however I don't mean to say he's a poor guitarist. Regarding the production: obviously, "Manifestation" was recorded in domiciliary conditions on low-quality equipment and instruments and that's the strongest drawback of this release. However, in spite of the technical disadvantages, this demo is still very interesting. NOIR does have future. Band contact: NOIR. (Krasniy)

NOIR - "Solve Et Coagula" demo
Rating: 5/10

More than a year has passed since I wrote the review on NOIR's first output (see above). Unfortunately, nothing has changed in NOIR camp for all this time. The same obliterated sound, non-existent production and lack of new ideas. Too bad... (Krasniy; 22.01.2002)

SOMBER - self-titled demo CD
Rating: 8/10

I was greatly surprised when I found out that this release is simply a rehearsal demo since absolutely nothing on this CD as in terms of production as of appearance insinuates it. The layout is purely impeccable with its professionally printed glossy booklet, enigmatic cover artwork and all the concomitant stuff. The music this US-originated act performs is a blend of Swedish Death Metal with old-era Black Metal and DOOMy lyrics (I assume the lyrics on "The Autumn of Life" and "Broken Dreams" show the most melancholic attitude). Highly original material, I should say. It's mostly mid-paced and varied with clean moments, however, there isn't any lack of radically speedy passages. Just check out such tracks as "Second Chance" and "Broken Dreams". You'll get my point then. Without any trace of doubt, SOMBER will go forth. At least they have all for it: they can blast, create atmospheres, combine various genres, growl, rasp, sing in clean voices and much more what any intelligent Metal fan would crave for. Damn, I still can't believe this is just a rehearsal demo CD! Get this effort! [email protected] (Krasniy)

SOULSICK - self-titled demo CD-R
Rating: 9/10

I'm not sure if this release fits the format of Fortitude webzine, but regardless to any genres, SOULSICK is definitely an interesting band. Coming as a blend of alternative rock and progressive metal, this demo shows a great potential this Swedish band possesses. Add some great material, original ideas, good musicianship and clear production and you get an outstanding effort for open-minded individuals. In fact, I would characterize SOULSICK's style as "club music": stuff which is usually played in rock clubs nowadays and is easily perceived with a mug of beer. This CD-R features 4 tracks with overall lenght of 17 minutes, the opening one being an instrumental tune. By the way, it reminded me of early DIMMU BORGIR heavily mixed with alternative tendencies. Special mention should be given to excellent female vocals that doubtlessly are one of the most appealing sides of this effort. The last track features fierce growling male vocals which sound a bit irrelevant in the context of this genre, however they don't ruin the overall relaxing atmosphere. I am very pleased with what I heard on this CD-R and I'm sure you'll like it too if you aren't narrow-minded. I hope that SOULSICK will release their debut full-lenght in 2001. Band contact: [email protected] (Krasniy)

SPECTRAL FORGE - self-titled demo CD
Rating: 8.5/10

One more neophyte act coming from U.S. Featuring only two tracks and lasting for no more than 9 minutes, this CD shows the ultimate aggression this young trio spilled forth in the musical shape. SPECTRAL FORGE play violent and dark Death Metal with furious vocals and genuine underground attitude. I especially enjoyed the opening track ("Offering to the Beast"), which demonstrates all the rage and unholy hate this band possesses. However, the music is rather diverse: some clean acoustic parts and movie samples are present along with relentless blast-beats, bestial vocals, macabre riffs and blazing solos. Speaking about reminiscences, SPECTRAL FORGE's demo sounds like a blend of DEEDS OF FLESH and THOU SHALT SUFFER of "Into the Woods of Belial" times (remember the intensity that CD demonstrated? In fact, I believe it's one of the best releases in the genre of Dark Death Metal). All musicians show fair playing skills, but I was especially impressed by the drummer's playing style. This guy is definitely working out. This demo is perseverantly recommended to all true metal fans. Ahh, one more essential element needs to be mentioned, this demo is distributed freely to any who'd like to hear it. Jawdropping, isn't it? Don't hesitate to get in touch with the guys: [email protected] (Krasniy)

SUHRIM - "Gore Is The End" demo
Rating: 7/10

SUHRIM - Brutal Death Metallers from Belgium. It is the fifth demo work of these truly devoted guys (SUHRIM has been around since 1989). "Gore Is The End" consists of 6 tracks of totally Brutal Death Metal. The production of this demo CD-R should be especially underlined: it is brilliant (even for a full-length album). The musicianship is also on a very high grade; no doubt, these guys know what they do. Roaring low-tuned bass, raw guitars, blast drumming, brutal low and high-pitched vocals, sick explicit lyrics. Sure, "Gore Is The End" is not a musical and lyrical masterpiece, but it is just what you need if you are bored of violins, female sopranos, atmosphere and other intellectual elements. The music itself is easily percepted, it does not bore you or something, this blastbeating musical violence makes you wanna bang your head, and kill trendy pussies, and I bet that is what the guys from SUHRIM tried to achieve. No doubt, your mission is accomplished, boys. I recommend "Gore Is The End" to all Brutal DM fans around. It is a worthy release. By the way, SUHRIM is signed to Soulreaper prod. Expect their debut CD by the end of 2000. Band Contact: [email protected] (Krasniy).

SUSPERIA "Illusions of Evil" promo
Rating: 8.5/10

Does the name Tjodalv tell you anything? NO? Then leave this site immediately and never come back. YES, it does? Then read further. Anyway, let us put the jokes aside and speak of this project. SUSPERIA was founded by Tjodalv and Cyrus (session musician in SATYRICON and OLD MAN'S CHILD) in 1998. A year later Tjodalv left Borgirs to work strictly on SUSPERIA. The band met year 2000 with the pro-done demo (recorded at Pitfire Studio) and mostly completed debut album. The musical side of this demo-CD represents a successful symbiosis of DIMMU BORGIR (not a big surprise) circa "Enthrone Darkness Triumphant", COVENANT "Nexus Polaris"-era and CARPE TENEBRUM of "Majestic Nothingness" times. To get a closer vision of this demo, add some weird tortured vocals here and there, occassional industrial parts, great production and traditional Norwegian spirit. Intrigued enough? Oh yes, I bet you are. Expect the upcoming album. Ah, almost forgot, Mustis from DIMMU BORGIR took part in the recording of "Illusions..." as session synth/piano player. (Krasniy)

SOILS OF FATE "Blood Serology" demo
Empty Vein Music
Rating: 8/10

Wow, what a blast! The drummer is a fucking murder machine. These guys sure can kick filthy trendy asses. SOILS OF FATE - grinding Brutal Death in the very vein of CANNIBAL CORPSE "Tomb Of The Mutilated"-era. Although they hail from Sweden, no Swedish Death Metal elements (sick of them) are present on this demo-tape. Dan Swano & co. take a rest. The cover inlay says: "Highest in the hierarchy of blasting sickness". Take my word, these guys prove to be the highest, well, at least one of the highest. A few special words about the vocals: brutal, guttural as hell (good job, Henke!). Especially, considering the fact that there were no harmonizing effects applied during the recording session. The only minus is the playing length (about 10 minutes). By the way, production rules. Hail to all non-trendy blastbeating maniacs! Contact SOF and get your copy at once: [email protected] (Krasniy).

STARDROWNED "Creatures of Abigor" demo
Passage Rec.
Rating: 8/10

It turns out to be an incomprehensible but pleasant legitimacy that all Greek bands featured in FP so far are killer ones. This demo starts will a sombre but darkly beautiful acoustic intro which is followed by two tracks of extreme mid-paced Black Metal with slight Heavy influences and keyboard touches. "Creatures of Abigor" cannot be named the most original release in BM realm, however it doesn't deserve any criticism in being typical or mediocre. The title track is the song that I will listen and listen for many times. This demo is definitely worth getting. You won't be disappointed if you contact the band at [email protected] (Krasniy)

STARDROWNED '99 promo
Passage Rec.
Rating: 10/10

What we have on this promo is the natural progression since "Creatures of Abigor". The material featured on this release represents a new perspective in the band's development. STARDROWNED stun the listener with blackened Death Metal of Swedish/Greek school with highly professional production and good sound. Too bad this promo features only two songs, that's definitely a major drawback of this release. Both of these songs are Masterpieces: majestic, stupendous, beautiful, grand. I can't find enough words to describe what I heard on this tape. This band is a worthy follower of NECROMANTIA, VARATHRON and other alike acts from Hellas. (Krasniy)

THE CALL OF FOUR GATES "Host of Chaos"

Second demo-tape of this killer austrian horde. This demo-tape presents an intro and 4 songs of the purest Black War Metal, sometimes melodic with some keyboard touches. Darkness, mysthicism and hate are the best way to describe their music. Highly recommended. (Adson)

VINTERRIKET - "...Gjennom Takete Skogen" demo
Neodawn Productions Germania
Rating: 8.5/10

Some underground dwellers have already granted Germany's Neodawn productions with a cult status. Perhaps, there is a point in that. "Gjennom..." was the first Neodawn release. The promo sheet says that the first edition of 100 hand numbered copies was sold out within two weeks. Well, it's possible since VINTERRIKET has received good reviews in the underground press. Fortitude is not an exclusion. I won't stick a cult tag to this one-man act, however, it would be unfair to leave VINTERRIKET unpraised. "Gjennom..." features 5 tracks of cold and mysterious ambient music, inspired by the Northern landscapes and nature. Doubtlessly, a very enjoyable and sincere release. I'm not sure if it is possible to order this demo now, but anyway, you should contact Chris of Neodawn if you are craving for this frosty output. [email protected] (Krasniy; 08.11.01)

VRYKOLAKAS - "Buried in Filthy Vomits" demo
Mangled Maggot Stew!
Rating: 5/10

This is a Death Metal four-piece from Singapore and they aren't bad, I should say. You'll find four well-aranged tracks on this tape with some nice gut vocals and tight rhytm-section. Guitars sound way too weak and that's doubtlessly a huge drawback. It's definitely not a masterpiece, but neither a failure. Contact: [email protected] (Krasniy; 01.08.2001)

WALL - "...a Slice of Aggressive Apathy" demo
Rating: 8/10

A quite enjoyable material coming from Norway. WALL is a one-man project delivering a weird combination of alternative rock, industrial passages and traditional heavy metal. A bright highlight of this CD-R is BRITNEY SPEAR's (!) cover and I admit that WALL's version sounds much more appealing than the initial song. All in all, "A Slice..." is a rather unordinary output for those looking for new horizons. Contact: [email protected] (Krasniy; 08.11.01)

WITCH CULT - "Thaumaturgical Rites based on Witch Cult"
HMW distribution
Rating: 1.5/10

This one made me laugh till getting dizzy. The cover inlay says that WITCH CULT was formed by a member of INFERNAL NECROMANCY. "So what?" - I wonder. It tells me nothing and hope it never will since this tape is a pure disgust in all terms. The reviewed effort, coming from Japan, represents a completely miserable attempt to copy bands like MZ.412, ABRUPTUM and that kind of black/industrial stuff. This is totally pathetic: bad quality equipment, unprofessional sampling, stupid and inappropriate effects. Add some childishly hysterical burps and unlistenable production and you'll get a bright example of inept musicianship lacking any creativity and intellect. I sincerely hope that this "band" will not release anything in the future because the scene is already heavily over-populated by worthless bands and releases. It is also necessary to mention that my position is not based on emotions and I consider it to be 100% fair. Nothing personal at all. Anyhow, I'll cite WC's email if you feel like wasting several bucks on this oriental "masterpiece". [email protected] (Krasniy)
