ABORTION / AGATHOCLES / DIN-ADDICT / MALIGNANT TUMOUR - 4 way split
Copremesis Records
Rating: 6/10

A split MC featuring four anti-fascist grindcore bands. Three of four bands hail from Eastern Europe. All songs are short and blasting. Vocals vary from brainless punk-alike mooing to ultra guttural growls. My preffered band here is obviously AGATHOCLES. These guys offer three blasting pieces of mince and they are doubtlessly the worthiest on this split MC. However, I feel like mentioning Slovakian ABORTION as well. They can beat the stench out of trendy pussies. Not much to say about DIN-ADDICT and MALIGNANT TUMOR besides the fact that the latter band has an awful sound. All in all, a must for AGATHOCLES fans. ABSCESS - "Tormented"
Necropolis Records
Rating: 7.5/10

Does the name AUTOPSY remind you of anything? I bet it does. Basically, it can be equalled to the notion Brutal Death Metal. Anyhow, after a long period of oblivion AUTOPSY are back under the name of ABSCESS. Featuring ex-members of DEATH, RAVENOUS, HEXX and the aforementioned AUTOPSY this CD will take the listener back to the times of "Mental Funeral". Same aggression and violence, same sickness and intensity, same spirit and drive. The bad thing about "Tormented" is that it gets boresome closer to the last tracks. However, this drawback didn't play on my nerves at all, because the first ten tracks are truly killer ones. Worthy output from a band with a cult predecessor. No further comments. (Krasniy)

AEON - "Dark Order" MCD
Necropolis Records / Death Vomit
Rating: 7/10

MORBID ANGEL is becoming a fashion. Swedish AEON underline the fact that they aren't related to IN FLAMES and DARK TRANQULLITY musicwise, showing more loyalty to Florida-school Death Metal. In fact, this stunningly produced MCD represents AEON's 2000 demo. I was completely shocked when I found that out since the recording quality here is far beyond traditional demo level. Featuring 6 tracks, "Dark Order" offers an insane blend of DEICIDE circa their cult "Legion" and the most relentless creations of the aforementioned MORBID ANGEL. I admit, we all heard all these spike/blood covered fusions for million times since early 90s. There's nothing original or new about this particular record, but it's definitely worthy. Special mention goes to splendid CD design and cover artwork. Check it out if you are into brutal Death Metal. (Krasniy; 10.08.2001)

ALGOL - "Gorgonus Aura"
The Twelth Planet Records
Rating: 8/10

"Gorgonus..." is the debut full-lenght of this US-based act. The official flyer categorizes this band as "elite American Black Metal". I'm afraid this statement sounds a bit too ambitious, however, not bad-grounded. Representing a soundscape of mid-tempo melodic Black Metal songs blended with enjoyable and relaxing acoustic interludes, this album provides 8 tracks, slightly reminding of DIMMU BORGIR's "For All Tid". I guess all who liked the aforementioned effort will surely enjoy this one. I did. (Krasniy; 19.06.2001)

AMORBITAL - "Invidia"
Shock Wave Records
Rating: 7/10

AMORBITAL is a Death Metal four-piece hailing from Slovakia. This stuff was initially out as a self-released effort in MC format, recorded back in 1998. Later, in 2000 if I'm not mistaken, it was re-released by French Shock Wave in the shape of CD. Musically "Invidia" represents a solid Death Metal output as mentioned above. Tightly played, well performed and decently recorded, it features nine mid-lenght tracks filled with European-school brutality. Some ocassional Doom influences are also present. They are mostly reflected in riffing structure and overall rhytm tempo. All in all, this album demonstrates an intelligent approach towards creating music in Death Metal genre. Most recommended tracks: "The Invasion Has Begun" and "Invidia". Label contact: [email protected] (Krasniy; 19.06.2001)

ANTAEUS "Cut Your Flesh And Worship Satan"
Baphomet / Necropolis Records
Rating: 8.5/10

This debut album granted ANTAEUS their well earned cult status and made the undeniable leaders of French Black Metal front. These 35 minutes were enough to successfully capture and then spill forth all the aggression and misanthropy that the band, led by its insane leader MkM, accumulated since 1994. Buzzing guitars, rasp, torturing vocals and relentless rhytm-section is the striking force of these French sadomasochists. Some songs are precedented by some totally schizophrenic intrusions, which only a maniacally possessed individual can give birth to. Musically, some parallels can be drawn with ANOREXIA NERVOSA (chaotism, brutality) and IMMORTAL circa "Battles in the North" (speed, tightness). The promo sheet compares this release with MAYHEM's "Wolf's Lair Abyss, but I personally can't trace at least a slight resemblance; "Cut Your Flesh..." is definitely hunred times more violent. In ideological context, this album greatly exceeds WATAIN, KRIEG, MUTIILATION and alike orthodox BM diehards put together. Definitely not for CoF/DIMMU BORGIR fans. (Krasniy; 19.07.2001)

ANTAIOS / STIGMATIC CHORUS "God; the Fake Artist" split CD
More Hate Productions
Rating: ANTAIOS: 9/10 STIGMATIC CHORUS: 5/10

This 60 minute long split features 4 tracks of Norwegian ANTAIOS and 7 tracks of Russian STIGMATIC CHORUS. Both of these bands specialize in Black Metal genre, but their differences are obvious. Tracks, belonging to ANTAIOS, are insanely fast-paced. However, despite the lack of any synths, they are extremely atmospheric. "Nightwish" era MARDUK was the first reminiscense that came to my mind when listening this. I urge you to check this christraping band out and especially their magnificent "The Corpse of Christ". Utterly great stuff! There's a completely different story with STIGMATIC CHORUS. Their contribution to this split is entitled "Waters of Styx" and that is quite strange since all their tracks (not counting intro/outro) are sung and entitled in Russian. Anyway, what these folks provide us with is heavily synth-spiced Black/Doom Metal reminding of a famous brit-pop band CRADLE OF FILTH. I've never been into that sort of stuff, thus the overall rating is just "5" out of "10". All in all, this a very worthy split just because of ANTAIOS presence. (Krasniy; 02.07.2001)

ANTIQUA - "In Red Nights..."
Luna Negra Records
Rating: 10/10

I cannot find enough expressions to describe fully my emotions on this album (perhaps it's even impossible). SUCH music should be listened without any prejudgements or prejudices. However, here is my position on ANTIQUA's debut: a release of unseen originality, superb creativity and stupendous musicianship. I wouldn't like to attach any cliches to ANTIQUA, therefore I'm not going to submit their music to any particular genre, but to give you a slight idea of what is represented on this release, think of an amalgam of the best works by THE GATHERING, early THEATRE OF TRAGEDY, DIMMU BORGIR (circa "Enthrone..."), PINK FLOYD (!!!) with the addition of ambient/psychodelic passages with a breath of Mexican foklore. Terrific release that touched my very soul. Contact Luna Negra recs. to experience what is described above. LUNA NEGRA Recs. (Krasniy).

APHOTIC - s/t MCD
self-released
Rating: 10/10

I'm not sure how one is supposed to perceive this output: as a demo (self-released, 15 minutes long) or as a professional MCD (impeccable layout design, flawless production, outstanding material). I'm really not sure and I don't give a shit to tell you the truth, since these 5 tracks make you ignore all those organizational details. Anyhow, the reviewed MCD seems to be APHOTIC's debut release and it's definitely successful in all possible terms. What this US band offers is mid-paced atmospheric Doom/Death Metal with catchy riffs, juicy growling vocals, absolutely unusual lyrics and a mighty epic feeling. I remained deeply impressed after having given this MCD a listen and it'll surely be my fave for quite a while. Highly recommended to those craving for originality. Band contact: [email protected] (Krasniy; 21.08.2001)

APHOTIC "Under Veil of Dark" MCD
self-released
Rating: 10/10

Doubtless is the fact that such bands as APHOTIC are unfortunately a great rarity nowadays. This trio hailing from Green Bay, US, keeps following the path they had chosen since their debut MCD. "Under Veil..." features 4 tracks of extremely melancholic ambient Death Metal which penetrates deep into your soul. The music is 100% mid-paced. A fact that only contributes to the overall unrepeatable atmosphere. This band is definitely among my faves. Someone, sign these folks!!! They deserve it. Band contact: [email protected] (Krasniy; 23.01.2002)

ARCHAEAN HARMONY "Nihility Mundane Soul"
Solemn Music
Rating: 7/10

I bet most of you have never heard about any metal labels from Malta. Well, neither did I till the recent moment. Solemn Music is a neophyte underground label and the reviewed release marks the beginning of their professional activity. So, what does ARCHAEAN HARMONY offer to the listener? "Nihility Mundane Soul" is a re-release of the band's promo CD, initially recorded in 1999. Musically, these four tracks, lasting for approximatively 30 minutes, represent mid-paced orchestrated Black Metal with sophistically programmed drum-machine. The band calls it Progressive Black Metal. Well, I won't argue with that. Straight comparisons can be done with HECATE ENTHRONED and certainly CoF. I believe it's far from being the worst resemblance for a young band like ARCHAEAN HARMONY. However, the band claimed to have changed its musical direction and is currently working on their new material. I'm really curious to see how the new stuff will sound like, since these guys do have a potential of making good music. Special mention is out to Lord Trebor who is a damn good keyboard player. Order this CD if you are interested at: [email protected] (Krasniy; 19.07.2001)

ARGHOSLENT - "Arsenal of Glory"
self-released
Rating: 9/10

This perseverant act keeps spawning releases since '91 despite being unsigned. However, their persistence was appreciated by French Drakkar and ARGHOSLENT's "Incorrigible Bigotry" CD will be out soon. Anyhow, in what regards "Arsenal..." I'll say that it's an excellent antichristian Death/Thrash album containing 6 skullcrushing tracks. Everything is well performed and finely recorded. What else a bonehard metalhead needs? Ge in touch with Arghosoldiers at: [email protected] (Krasniy; 23.01.2002)

AURORA BOREALIS - "Northern Lights"
Nightsky Productions
Rating: 8.5/10

"Northern..." is the second full-lenght of these American black metallers. Actually, it may seem too short for a full-lenght since its playing lenght comprises not more than 30 minutes. However, it features 7 tracks and a weird, tribalistic drum-based outro, which is purely awesome. The material featured on this release represents mostly speedy Black Metal with harsh vocals and some intrusions from Death/Thrash realm. Recommended. (Krasniy; 30.06.2001)

AVERSE SEFIRA - "Battle's Clarion"
Lost Disciple Records
Rating: 9/10

"Battle's..." is the second effort of this Texas-based act after their glorious "Homecoming's March" CD. The most notable highlight of this release is the fact that it got much more aggressive if compared to the previous one. "Battle's..." delivers 35 minutes of histerically violent occult Black Metal with occasional ambient intrusions, which massively aggravate this album's atmosphere of total misanthropy and chaos. Special mention goes to those atrocious vocals and unorthodox rhytm-section. Totally killer! So, it's just like the promo sheet says: "If you like it fast, hard, and covered in corpse-paint and spikes, you'll love this." Bull's eye! (Krasniy; 19.06.2001)

BENIGHTED - "Harbingers of the Victorium Aeternus"
Arcadia Productions
Rating: 8/10

This CD seems to be the first release issued by Arcadia Productions, a young but very promising U.S. Black Metal label (check out the bands signed to them - killer ones). "Harbingers..." is the debut effort of this BM act hailing from North Carolina (I wonder what is the cause of such a strong Black Metal upheaval in the States). BENIGHTED claim it's a long-play, but I would rather call it a mini album (total playing lenght is approximatively 25 minutes). In fact, there are four songs featured here plus an intro and a devastating BATHORY's "Satan My Master" cover. So, what can this darksome trio astound the listener with? Firstly, with their professional musical skills and approach; all songs are well-structured and thoughtout. That's a huge advantage, especially in the case of debut outcome. These guys can definitely play their instruments in the right way. Secondly, goes the musical canvas itself. Speaking in terms of genre, BENIGHTED's creations represent orchestrated fast-paced Black Metal with a grim and blasphemous attitude. Somehow it sounds like a cross between early SATYRICON, LIMBONIC ART and NOKTURNAL MORTUM circa "Nechrist". As you see, it's quite violent. The production is overally well-handled, but the rhytm-section could be mixed a bit louder. However, it's not a huge minus. I liked this effort. It possesses this unique underground spirit most of the bands have lost long ago. I hope to hear more from BENIGHTED legion soon. Recommended. (Krasniy).

BLACK COUNTESS - "Child of the Demonic Moon" MCD
self-released
Rating: 5/10

How do you like such song titles as "Desire", "Tempting by the Cunt" or "Carpathian Legends"? Don't get scared, these names aren't taken from the new CRADLE OF FILTH "masterpiece". However, BLACK COUNTESS must be the band that sounds most close to the aforementioned pop-stars in the whole Russia. The reviewed MCD was recorded in early 1999 and it features 5 tracks of vampyric Black/Doom Metal in the very vein of "Dusk and Her Embrace" by CoF. Truthfully, I had expected more from this band. They don't offer anything new or original. Every riff and melody reminds of Dany & co. I got totally pissed off by the way the drum machine and synth orchestrations sound. They are way too "synthetic" and unnatural. Besides, the song writer should improve his english. BLACK COUNTESS will succeed only in the case if they cease worshipping CoF musically. As for me, I won't give this release a second listen. Band's management contact: [email protected]. (Krasniy)

BLACK COUNTESS - "Blood, Desire and Dead Nenuphars"
self-released
Rating: 5/10

Same situation here (see the review above). Artificial drums and synths, sarcastic female chants, hysteric shrieks a-la Dani Filth, not a single trace of musical evolution and total lack of originality. Perhaps, BLACK COUNTESS have their circle of fans, but I couldn't get into their music and concept. I admit that my position is slightly subjective since I simply can't stand the poserism preached by CoF, but it's the way it is. I'd rather listen to some truly dark stuff than pay attention to the clones of the famous pop-bands. Sorry guys, nothing personal. (Krasniy).

BLOODAXE - "Bloodthrone"
self-released
Rating: 7/10

BLOODAXE is a duet based in Ontario, Canada. However, Nordavinden, BLOODAXE frontman, has got Norwegian roots. Obviously, all lyrics are focused upon Norse mythology and history. Although Nordavinden claims he hasn't even listened to ENSLAVED, I still believe that this debut album is greatly influenced by Ivar's creations. Musically, "Bloodthrone" represents an extremely harsh form of Black Metal, mostly fast-paced, with a very humid guitar sound. I believe that all late ENSLAVED and IMMORTAL fans shall dig this out. If you are interested, get your CD here: [email protected] (Krasniy; 19.08.2001)

BLOODTHORN - "Under The Reign of Terror"
Red Stream Records
Rating: 8.5/10

The latest release of these Norwegian black metallers beats all the previous ones in terms of heaviness and aggression. In fact, they've done an absolutely schizophrenic change musicwise. The most obvious reminescense seems to be "Panzer Division" -era MARDUK. Surprised, huh? It's not all yet. The material sounds like a cross of Norwegian (MAYHEM) and Swedish (MARDUK, DARK FUNERAL) Black Metal schools. Highly professional riffing and absolutely punishing rhytm section are definitely the (un)brightest highlights of this album. Some occasional synth touches can still be found here and there, but the emphasis is no longer put on keyboards. They are stunningly handled though, check out "The Age of Suffering" for that. As a conclusion, I'll admit that it's a great Black Metal album from the recognized masters of the genre. Another element which excretes "Under The Reign..." is the session appearance of Necrobutcher of MAYHEM and a totally nuclear "Deathcrush" cover. As a result the listeners get 40 minutes of greatly perfromed and finely produced skull crushing full-speed Black Metal. (Krasniy; 07.08.2001)

BLOOD STORM - "Ancient Wraith of Ku"
Metal War Productions
Rating: 8/10

To my shame I knew nothing about this US band before I received the promo from Metal War, a newborn American label. Obviously, BLOOD STORM is a well-established American four-piece, specializing in occult Black Metal with some slight Heavy Metal influences. Conceptually this band can be compared to ABSU. Musically, evident parralels can be traced with MELECHESH: the same pounding heaviness and rich sound. If you crave for highly professional occult Black Metal than "Ancient Wraith..." is a must for you. (Krasniy; 06.11.01)

CABAL - "Midian"
Red Stream Records
Rating: 7/10

Coming in a top-notch package with sophisticated artwork, this release provides 30 minutes of primitive old-school thrash/death metal a-la earliest stuff unleashed by SEPULTURA and SLAYER. "Does anyone still play this music?" is the most common question you may ask in this case. Yeah, I agree that this genre has seen its better days. However, it was very wide-spread in mid 80s - early 90s. "Midian" was recorded right in this period (1990 - to be more exact). Are you shocked? So am I. It doesn't happen very often that an album gets released in 10 years after it was recorded. First I thought that "Midian" was recorded as a demo and Red Stream simply rereleased it in CD format, but afterwards this conjecture turned out to be wrong, because no one has ever recorded demos in the famous Morisound studio. Possibly, the band just didn't find a label at that period. Anyhow, this album is brilliantly performed and produced and it also features Killjoy on vocals, fact which makes CABAL extremely attractive to all NECROPHAGIA fans. Unfortunately, it's the vocals that are the weakest side of this release. However, this effort is worth checking out, it revives that good spirit of the old days. (Krasniy)

CASTRUM - "The Leading Spirit of Medieval Tortures"
Metal Force
Rating: 7.5/10

Frankly speaking, this MC release could be reviewed in "Demo Reviews" section too as long as "The Leading Spirit..." is a compilation of CASTRUM's early works (circa 1996) released in 1999. To avoid any misunderstandings this is not croatian CASTRUM. This one is of Ukrainian origin. Material featured on this MC represents mid-tempoed synth-spiced Death Metal, reminding early DEICIDE and HYPOCRISY. Artistic side of this release is quite impressive (special mention goes to Cornelius, master-mind behind CASTRUM, whose riffs and leads strike as splendid ones). However, the production on the majority of tracks lacks any professionalism and intensity (except well-produced songs from "Pleasure in the Deeds of Horror" demo). Anyway, I strongly recommend "The Leading Spirit..." to all who care about DM in Eastern Europe. Death Metal maniacs, this stuff is for you. Band contact: [email protected] (Krasniy).

CASTRUM "Hatenourisher"
Bloodbucket Productions
Rating: 9/10

Finally!!! Ukrainian CASTRUM (not to mix up with the Croatian vampyres) unleashed their debut CD release. Most of the material on this bonecrushing effort was initially featured on the band's demo and rehearsal tapes as well as on "The Leading Spirit of Medieval Tortures" MC (out on Metal Force recs in 1999). Of course all these tracks were re-recorded for the album. By those times CASTRUM used to be a 100% Death Metal band. Now things have changed notably. The band added a huge load of hysterical blasting brutality, punishing rhytm-section and overall aggression in this release. Music got very much faster thanks to new drummer. Bestial rasp vocals by the band's mastermind Cornelius spice "Hatenourisher" up with an extreme Black Metal spirit. Check these guys and order their CD if you feel like getting familiar with Ukrainian Death/Black violence. Label contact: [email protected] (Krasniy; 17.07.2001)

CIRCLE OF DEAD CHILDREN - "Genocide Machine"
Necropolis Records / Death Vomit
Rating: 10/10

A stunningly emotional output this time. "Genocide Machine" comes as a conceptional album, all tracks being focused upon the concept that each human is a part of a humongous machine that soon will end the life on the planet. Musically, this is pure fullspeed grindcore incorporated with elements coming from Noise/industrial realm. Special mention is out to varying vocals that are doubtlessly one of the brightest highlights of this effort. Most of the songs are quite short, not allowing the listener to get bored. All in all, this is a incomparably strong release, proving thart there's still plenty of room for innovations in the realm of Grindcore. By the way, this CD features some live footage recorded at CODC show in Detroit, January 2001. It shows all the band's potential in spewing the aggression unto the masses. This is faultless! Get it. (Krasniy; 18.05.2001)

DARK FORTRESS - "Tales From Eternal Dusk"
Red Stream Records
Rating: 7/10

I regard this release as a typical "late 90s - early 00s" BM album. I'll explain the reason: it doesn't lack musical professionalism, it features some nice lyrics and a fine artwork. The material is well arranged and impressively executed. Finally, it's successfully promoted by the label. However, there's a missing element that would make this German act way more attractive for sophisticated BM listeners. I'm speaking about spirit and sincerity, none of which I'd found here. Musically "Tales..." appears as a cross of early EMPEROR and late DIMMU BORGIR (read: circa "Enthrone...", "Spiritual...", etc.) Unfortunately, Dimmu's influences are dominative. All in all, this is a worthy output and I'll surely give it a few more listens, but it's far from being inspiring, if you know what I mean. (Krasniy; 04.08.2001)

DARK FUNERAL "In The Sign..."
Necropolis Records
Rating: -

Is there any need to rate this release? I believe not, since most of you are acquainted with its content, which is the re-issued version of DARK FUNERAL's '94 self-titled classic MCD. Necropolis decided to re-release it for the American audience in 2000 with a totally new artwork by Necrolord (EMPEROR, DISSECTION, AT THE GATES) and two BATHORY covers. All in all, a great and memorable release, reminding the fans of the early DARK FUNERAL days and its initial line-up, which is completely ruined nowadays. Open the Gates!!! (Krasniy; 19.07.2001)

DARKNESS ETERNAL - "Dawn of the Suffering"
self-released
Rating: 8.5/10

I was surprised to find out that this Canadian act is actually a one-man band since all instruments on this album are handled so professionally and tightly. George Velaetis, the one behind DARKNESS ETERNAL is doubtlessly a great multi-instrumentalist. Musically, "Dawn..." represents an extremely depressive form of Death/Doom Metal. All parts are mostly slow and mid-paced, though still quite harsh. Vocals vary from low-tone grunts to high pitched screeches. An ass kicking release indeed. I'm sure that orthodox MORBID ANGEL fans will dig it up. I'll help: [email protected] (Krasniy; 03.08.2001)

David Neil Cline - "Malefic Influence"
Gazochtahagen Records
Rating: 1/10

One more "guitar hero" has showed his "outstanding guitar skills" to the world ... Yep, this album is definitely a malefic influence for the Metal/non-Metal scene. In fact, it's not Metal at all. What we have is a mixture of old KISS and VAN HALEN. It all has been played million times before and I've never been a fan of this stuff. . Everyone's sick of it now. Here's a funny thing that left in my mind after listening: the vocalist keeps shouting with a gayish voice in the opening track: "I've got evil, evil, evil in my blood!!! I've got evil, evil, evil in my heart!!!". David, the worst evil of yours was to start composing music! However, I assume that BON JOVI and AEROSMITH (pile of shit) fans will grab these CDs off the shelves in not more than a month. They will, but you shouldn't if you care about your bucks and ears. Utterly worthless. (Krasniy; 06.06.2001)

DEFILED - "Ugliness Revealed"
Baphomet Records / Death Vomit
Rating: 8.5/10

Truthfully, it's my first experience of focused listening to Japanese Death Metal and I should say I've never heard anything as undescribable in Metal genre as this one. I'll try to depict my impressions though. The most suitable word for categorizing this hellish output is "unorthodox". Anything here, starting with the riff structures and ending with the cover artwork by Wes Benscoter (SLAYER, NILE, AC/DC) is totally weird and twisted. Almost every track is precedented by bizzare short intros which partly set the mood for the upcoming portion of violent high-speed hysteria. It needs to be mentioned All DEFILED members are doubtlessly extremely skilled musicians since it's even hard to trace the change of riffs and melodies. There are hundreds of them in each song. Negligible parallels can be drawn with NAKED CITY in this context. However, DEFILED's stuff is far more intelligent. By the way, "Ugliness..." was mixed by Jim Morris at his (in)famous Morrisound studio. Consequently, the overall sounding quality is purely stunning. This full-lenght is a release that needs time to be fully perceived and due to its weirdness it's definitely not for everyone. However, it pleased my taste with its unusual originality. (Krasniy)

DEPRAVED - "Decadence & Lust"
Warpath Records
Rating: 6/10

"Decadence..." is the second full-lenght of these French sickos, offering 12 tracks captured in 30 minutes. This is extremely fast grind-death with some absolutely perverted lyrics dealing with sexual perversions and serial killers such as Henry Lee Lucas ("Mass Killer") and Jeffrey Dahmer ("Masturbation in Worms"). Too sick for me. That's all. Label contact: [email protected] (Krasniy; 19.08.2001)

DER GERWELT / NARGOTHROND split CD
More Hate productions
Rating: DER GERWELT - 8/10 NARGOTHROND - 8.5/10

DER GERWELT is a side-project of Russia's More Hate "boss" Alex Kantemirov (also in TALES OF DARKNORD). What DER GERWELT members provide the listener with is actually the re-issued version of their demo. If I'm not mistaken it was entitled "Revelation 666". Anyhow, musically this output represents a relatively successful attempt to blend nordic fast-paced rawness with touchy piano and acoustic passages. Most recommended tracks are: "Sons of Moon and Fire" and "Thy Darkness and Hate". The drawbacks of this effort are flat sounding drum machine and primitive lyrics. Regardless to that, DER GERWELT left me pleased and excited.

To avoid any misunderstandings I'll state that this split features NARGOTHROND from Russia. All music is handled by Lazar of ROSSOMAHAAR and Kai Stalhammar of Vae Solis zine took care of the lyrics and concept. What this act's music represents is atmospheric sympho Black Metal totally deprived of guitars. I bet that you've just recalled of Polish PROFANUM. Well yeah, you're damn right. There's definitely much common between these two acts and I believe that all fans of romantic but grim BM will be interested in "Carnal Lust and Wolfen Hunger". (Krasniy; 25.10.01)

DIABOLICAL - "Desert of Desolation" MCD
Cadla Communications/Guano Records
Rating: 7/10

DIABOLICAL hail from the ancient viking land of Sweden, although they don't have anything to do with historical/mythological conceptions. This MCD features an instrumental intro and 3 full-length songs of aggressive Black/Death Metal in the vein of the heaviest stuff that DISSECTION unleashed. By the way, the vocals also remind me the way Ion used to sing. I bet that no one will claim that DIABOLICAL lack energy, they definitely don't: "Guidance of Sin" is purely insane, as well as "Deserts" and "The Dreaming Dead". The thing DIABOLICAL lack is experience and musical skillfulness. I don't mean the guys can't handle their instruments, no, but the technical level of their musicianship could be higher. The production on this MCD is good enough for a demo release, but not for an official MCD: it's simply not coherent enough, guitars sound too high and noisy, muffling the drums, the same goes for the vocals: they could be mixed a bit lower. Despite all the negative aspects mentioned above, DIABOLICAL is a worthy band with worthy stuff, and I am totally sure that the upcoming full-lenght CD will be a monster. This work breathes with underground metal spirit and it is sincere as well (no trendy bullshit). Recommended to Undergound Death/Black Metal fans. Order the MCD at: http://listen.to/cadla. (Krasniy)

DISGORGE - "Forensick"
Death Vomit / Necropolis Records
Rating: 8/10

It seems that with this release Death Vomit set their motto as "The sicker - the better". Basically, this release features the same stuff as in 2000, initially out on Repulse, however, there are several live tracks (the best one being "Pedophilamorphia of Exchreacholemical Endolapse") and two tracks from DISGORGE's 7" split with Czech SQUASH BOWELS. Speaking closer about DISGORGE style: "Forensick" provides an hour of non-stop blastbeating grindgore violence, splattering with guts, blood, decayed innards, rotten genitals, filth and alike atrocities. Vocals are of ultra-guttural ink, sounding completely sick and apoplectic. The lyrics beat CARCASS's creations ten times. I'll cite a few unreadable song-titles. For instance: "Urethrive Decortico-Xanthomatose Muco Gestated Scaffolds", "Haemorph Endarteriectomized Punzed Eozinophile". I fail to even spell these words, not speaking about getting into what they mean. Although, I doubt I actually want to know what they mean. The cover artwork is even more disturbing than the one on IMPALED's "Choice Cuts" cover. In what regards parallels, I guess that DEAD INFECTION circa "A Chapter of Accidents" is the first output coming to mind in this case. By the way, George Fisher of CANNIBAL CORPSE contributed some vocal parts here. So, I guess that all CC freaks are craving for this one. An utterly extreme release. (Krasniy; 18.05.2001)

DIVINA ENEMA - "At the Conclave"
Eldritch Music
Rating: 10/10

Belarus is doubtlessly the land of the most talented acts in the whole Eastern Europe and DIVINA ENEMA from Minsk undeniably prove this statement. Musically, "At the Conclave" shows a highly impressive example of how a Doom/Black Metal album should be conceived and performed. Capturing the nostalgic and melancholic essence of the aforementioned Doom genre, the band incorporates it with the mysticism and audial violence of Black insanity, touchy cello, violin and saxophone (!) arrangements and complements this pinnacle by diverse types of vocals (varying from ultra-high pitched clean vocals to relentless growling). The overall result is so extremely extraordinary, so different, so unusual that I completely fail to cite any reminiscences. Perhaps, some slight parallels with ANGIZIA would be appropriate in this case. However, the music itself is not the only characteristic element of this album. Being a 100% conceptual effort in terms of lyrical canvas, "At the Conclave" displays the spiritual battle of the main personage with the exterior world (at least, I perceived it in this way). There are 6 tracks on this CD, but their role comes as more than conditional, since they don't interrupt the plot of this theatrical play entitled "At The Conclave". I'm highly impressed by this piece of art. This is a breath of pure, fresh air for the scene, which is awfully inundated by worthless and stagnated so-called "artists". Not destined for brainless masses. For intellectuals only. (Krasniy; 24.05.2001)

ELENIUM - "This Side of Paradise" MCD
HellaRecords
Rating: 8.5/10

"This Side..." is the debut official effort of this Finnish act (released back in 1998) and it shows a Black Metallish version of of the works of such bands as AT THE GATES and IN FLAMES to name a few. Basically, this is majestic and obscure Black Metal heavily spiced up by synths and piano passages, all performed mostly at mid-tempo speed. All band members are skillful in handling their instruments and they definitely don't any lack imagination and creativity (this especially deals with those stunning piano arrangements). Not sure if this mini CD is still available via HellaRecords. However, you can contact directly the band if you are a fan of Swedish Death Metal and you are craving for more originality. This band has it all. I enjoyed the listening process. ELENIUM contact: [email protected] (Krasniy; 30.05.2001)

ETERNAL MAJESTY / KRIEG / JUDAS ISCARIOT / MACABRE OMEN 4 ways split CD
Dae Mortiis prod.
Rating: 8/10

The given release represents a split CD of four bands involved in the extremest form of Black Metal. These are: ETERNAL MAJESTY (France), KRIEG (U.S.), JUDAS ISCARIOT (U.S.)and MACABRE OMEN (Hellas). I assume it would be rational if I delineate each band apart and then give the overall rating.

1) ETERNAL MAJESTY - It was a great mistake to accord these guys the role of the opening act. Basically, their efforts represent an attempt of blending dark ambient passages with harsh Black Metal, quite unfortunate one to say the truth. Awful production, poor musicianship, incomprehensible ideological background and sometimes childish attitude are the most notable drawbacks on EM's tracks. Special mention goes to the drummer. By my opinion, this guy is one of the worst musicians in the BM realm ever! All his attempts to sound unorthodox usually turn into a mere clownery. Definitely the weakest band on this release.
2) KRIEG - notorious grim black metallers from U.S. strike as the most violent ones. Uncompromising ultrafast True Black Metal with merciless riffs, inhuman vocals and deep underground feeling will shred any christian's sheep-soul to pieces. However, the production could be more distinguishable. Anyway, KRIEG is a MUST for every True Black Metal diehard.
3) JUDAS ISCARIOT once again spill forth the audial waves of mental violence and nihilistic misanthropy. JI's tracks on this split represent one of the earliest, never before released demos, recorded by the adamant Akhenaten quite a while ago. Remember the unforgettable "Transilvanian Hunger"? This demo sounds real close to the aforementioned DARKTHRONE's unholy masterpiece: raw guitar sound, primitive rhytm-section, humid production and hate towards all living. Doubtlessly, this stuff is worth checking. Hail to Akhenaten!
4) MACABRE OMEN - this band is purely amazing. Definitely, the strongest one on this split. These greek warriors have totally astounded me with technical fast-tempo Black/War Metal of the highest probe. Skillful musicianship, spiced up with relentless antichristian misanthropy in compliance with professional sound quality are the most appealing sides of this uniquely talented act. Unfortunately, I haven't heard MO before, thus I cannot judge exactly, however, the given two tracks somehow remind me of NOKTURNAL MORTUM's "On The Moonlight Path". Possibly, due to the same intensity of aggression and war spirit. Cult!

In spite of all drawbacks of this release, it is categorically worth listening to. You won't regret. I didn't. Contact Dae Mortiis prod for your copy. By the way, the number of copies is strictly limited, so hurry up. (Krasniy)

FAERGHAIL - "Blood Will Follow Blood" MCD
Northern Sound Records
Rating: 9/10

Frankly, I feel slightly confused about characterizing the musical genre this Finnish act adheres to. I don't tend to stick trendy cliches to bands, but to give you the notion, I'll say that "Blood..." can be regarded as Dark/Black Metal with multiple symphonic influences. However, it's not bounded by any genre limits, since the band members seem to be highly intellectual and creative individuals (just read the lyrics and you'll understand this point). Too bad for me, but I haven't heard FAERGHAIL's previous outcomings ("Dark Oceans Calm" EP on Dark Moon prod and "Horizon's Fall" CD on Shiver recs), therefore I cannot trace the evolution of this band. Anyhow, the reviewed release has deeply touched me with its sincerity, excitement and spirit. This MCD lasts for 20 minutes, featuring 4 tracks. I should mention that all of them differ greatly: "...kun veri peittaa maan" appears as enigmatic and emotional, "Blood Will Follow Blood" strikes as mere misanthropy, "Rain" is melancholic and romantic, "Daughter of the Storm" is just beautiful. "Blood..." is an inspiring effort capturing the essence of human feelings by the means of Metal. Northern Sound Records should be proud of such a solid release. By the way, the LSP Company (ex-Shiver recs) was up to release the new FAERGHAIL longplay "Where Angels Dwell No More" in January 2001. Although, I'm not aware if it has already been done, I have an urge to get my hands on it. (Krasniy).

FJELLTRONE - "Skogen Ande"
Dark End Records
Rating: 6/10

The debut full-lenght of this young one-man Swedish project offers 45 minutes of enigmatic but at the same time romantic ambient music. Frankly, I feel perplexed in describing this effort. It is very relaxing and meditative and that's a huge plus. However, all the melodies as well as the musicianship are extremely primitive. Primitive to the core. Unfortunately, this negative element outweights on the comparative balance. Some more variety would be very appropriate for "Skogen Ande". I definitely can't claim that I admire this release, but I suppose that it will doubtlessly be found attractive by everyone who liked BURZUM's "Hlidskjalf". Contact: [email protected] (Krasniy)

F.O.B. - "Blame?"
Fobia Records
Rating: 7.5/10

F.O.B. (I wonder what that name means) hail from Czech Republic. "Blame?" is their debut full-lenght release after several self-financed demo works. The band's management defined F.O.B.'s style as thrash/death metal and, franky speaking, this definition kind of ruined my curiosity in this act (I'm not a great fan of thrash/death blends). However, I was extremely surprised in the positive way after having pushed the playback button. "Blame?" starts with a short psychodelic sinister guitar intro that is followed by pure blasting sickness in the vein of good old US-school brutal Death Metal. Influences from thrash realm are present as well, but they aren't as obvious as I had expected them to be. sometimes "Blame?" reminds of NAPALM DEATH circa "Inside the Torn Apart" with its unusual riff structures and original funky clean parts. All this brutal insanity ends with a sombre clean guitar outro that touched me with its sad nostalgic spirit. As a conclusion, I would like to recommend F.O.B. to all death/progressive/thrash metal fans who will to discover a new original act from Eastern Europe. (Krasniy)

FOREST STREAM - "Last Season Purity"
Tears of Mortal Solitude Records
Rating: 10/10

FOREST STREAM is a duet hailing from a tiny Russian town Chernogolovka, conducted by two dark lonesome souls: Sonm and Omin. The given release is their full-lenght debut, however, it could be regarded as a mini album since its total playing lenth is just 35 minutes long. Sonm characterized me FOREST STREAM's style as "Funeral Metal", a description that totally intrigued me. After having given "Last Season Purity" a listen, I realized the meaning of Sonm's words. To get a basic view of the way FOREST STREAM sound, mix up SUMMONING circa "Minas Morgul", LIMBONIC ART of "Moon in the Scorpio"-times plus ASHES YOU LEAVE "Desperate Existence"-era, add perfect keyboard/synth arrangements and absolutely excellent sound-production. There are three songs present on this release (besides an intro and outro), the shortest of which being 8 minutes long; the fact that only contributes to the overall epic feel. "Last Season Purity" evokes deep emotions of melancholy and pure sadness; feelings that crystalize the human soul. Without any doubts, if properly promoted, this release will become an underground classic in the next several years. One of the sincerest efforts that I have heard so far. Enrich your spirituality and contact the band for your copy: [email protected]. (Krasniy)

FORGIVE ME NOT - "Tearfall"
Metal Agen Records
Rating: 6/10

FMN hail from Tula, Russia. "Tearfall" was their debut output, released in 1998. What these guys try to emphasize is some sort of romantic Heavy Metal. Straightly speaking, I expected much more from this album. Much more. The music proves to be too monotonous and all songs are pretty much alike. Not my cup of tea. (Krasniy; 05.11.01)

FORGIVE ME NOT - "Spaceapple"
Metal Agen Records
Rating: 8.5/10

You must have noticed that I was quite disappointed with FMN debut album (see the review above). However, "Spaceapple", their second album, turned out to be a pleasant surprise for me. The material became much more mature, thoughout and diverse. The overall style has also faced certain changes: you'll be able to hear doom parts here and there. I think this album deserves to be listened and even admired. Highly recommended to all darkwave/gothic fans. (Krasniy; 05.11.01)

GATEWARD - "Legenda Adradzhennia" MC
The Flaming Arts
Rating: 5/10

Slavonic Black Metal hailing from Belarus. Harsh guitars, lightspeed drums, slavonic folk elements performed on keyboards, out-of-key female singing. Perhaps, I'm simply tired of all these patriotic war hymns. If you aren't, contact TFA for your copy: [email protected] (Krasniy; 09.11.01)

GIRLS UNDER GLASS - "Frozen" MCD
Van Richter Records
Rating: 8/10

I admit I have never been well familiar with the European goth/industrial scene and "Frozen" is the first GUG output that I've listened so far. I didn't expect much from it, however I was pleasantly surprised after having given it a listen. I won't even mention that all technical thingies here are executed at top notch level, therefore I'll underline solely the musical content. The material on this MCD is extremely versatile, varying from almost harsh industrial parts to pop-like synth passages. The most impressive and enjoyable track here is doubtlessly "Frozen", which is actually a Madonna (!!!) cover. It's also the heaviest one. All in all, "Frozen" strikes as an original work and I invoke all open minded individuals to give it a listen. It might not stun you, but at least it'll grant you some positive emotions. By the way, this MCD was executed in collaboration with such bands as DAS ICH and WOLFSHEIM. (Krasniy; 18.08.2001)

GODS TOWER - "The Eerie"
Metal Agen Records
Rating: 7/10

GODS TOWER... There were times when this defunct band from Belarus' was the most famous act hailing from ex-USSR countries. These glorious times have passed, but GODS TOWER are still a cult band in Russia and CIS countries. "The Eerie" is their debut album, released by Russian Metal Agen in 1997 in digipak format. The album features only 6 tracks which last more than 50 minutes! I fail to characterize the genre that GODS TOWER used to specialize in. It comes as a blend of Doom and traditional Heavy Metal slightly spiced up with slavonic folk themes and some pagan lyrics. The main drawback of this album is its monotony that gets on nerves after 20 minutes pass. Anyhow, this album is highly recommended to those who wish to get familiar with East European scene. (Krasniy; 23.01.2002)

GODS TOWER - "The Turns"
Metal Agen Records
Rating: 9/10

Arghhhh, what an album!!! Released in 1997 in digipak format, it features some of the best material these Belarussian metal Gods have ever composed. Such masterpieces as "I Am The Raven", "Seven Rains of Fire" and "Twilight Sun" will never be forgotten by hordes of East European metalheads. The sound quality on "The Turns" got even more prominent and powerful that on the previous effort and the material - much more diverse and thoughtout. Among the highlights I would like to mention absolutely stunning and unorthodox guitar riffs and the inimitable atmosphere of metal pathos that GODS TOWER managed to create on this effort. Too bad this act is gone... (Krasniy; 23.01.2002)

GOLD FUR EISEN - "Kein Morgen"
Tepa Tape Records
Rating: 4/10

"All ideas make up the conceptional unity, which is carried through the band's image (for example, all the songs are only in german and any form of english is avoided)." - that's what the promo-sheet says regarding this band's image and concept. You might think it's fair and admit that any band should have its own way in the scene. However, you should take into account that the promo-sheet is written in english (avoidance failure, huh?) and the promo campaign is being run worldwide. I wonder how come all this happens? Why don't you guys distribute your stuff only in Germany if you are such devoted Deutsch puritists? Cease sending it to Eastern-Europe (as in my case) or whatever other places you forward your promos to; only then your "conceptional unity" will be kept in line. Anyhow, this introduction was written just to underline my irritation caused by the reviewed release. "Kein Morgen" is a straight example of what happens when a merely mediocre band lacking any highlights craves to sound and look original. I'm afraid it sounds blunt, but there's not a single worthy track on on this album. Some passages are nice, but never the whole songs. GOLD FUR EISEN sound as a death-metallish version of their compatriots DIE TOTEN HOSEN. It's some sort of punk metal stuff with totally annoying stupid vocals sung in a screaming manner (frankly, it's the weakest element here), some clean parts here and there, infant choir (girls, you lost your mom!) and wannabe non-comformist lyrics. Although, there are no technical drawbacks present here, the artistic aspect of this full-lenght is obviously disappealing to me. However, you can check these guys out if you are into punk/hardcore/metal blends. I'm not. Band's management contact (Krasniy)

GOREROTTED - "Mutilated in Minutes"
Dead Again Records
Rating: 8.5/10

Being the first release of this neophyte UK label, "Mutilated in Minutes", the debut GOREROTTED (UK) album, attacks the listener with full-speed Grind/Death Metal executed in the vein of the strongest works of CARCASS and EXHUMED. Very decently performed and produced, this full-lenght has got several notable highlights, such as some atypical guitar riffs/solos and the presence of two vocalists (!), with one handling growling vocals while the other one rasping. All tracks are 3-4 minutes long thus not being boring or anything like that. Special mention goes to that twisted and totally perverted comic-like cover artwork and CD layout. Looks quite original indeed. The thing that I most like about this band and their release is that they don't seem to be taking all that gore-stuff seriously (I mean the image and the concept), blending violence with fun and wacky humor. Just look at these song names: "Cut, Gut, Beaten, Eaten", "Severed, Sawn and Sold as Porn", "Stab Me Till I Cum". A disaster! I like it and I think it deserves the attention of any Death Metal fan out there, looking for something fresh. Label contact: [email protected] (Krasniy; 1.06.2001)

GOTHICA - "Night Thoughts"
Cold Meat Industry
Rating: 9/10

"Night Thoughts" is the full-lenght debut of this Italian dark-ambient act. However, the band is quite old and was formed back in 1994. I'll start the description with the cover artwork which at once sets the tone for the whole album and depicts a horde of worshippers entering a deserted temple. It's sublimely executed. The artist must be a highly gifted individual. The band line-up features seven musicians and as far as I understood five of them are session guests. Anyway, let us pass to the music itself. This CD features 12 tracks with the overall playing lenght of 45 minutes. As you see, all the songs are quite short (especially in the context of the dark-ambient genre). However, it only improves them, they don't get to bore you. The band claims they try "to explore the darkest abysses of music-culture", but my personal position regarding this statement is contrary to theirs. It is purely beautiful. Sombre and beautiful. Sometimes it's dark (like on "Spirits of the Dead"), sometimes melancholic and romantic ("Nothingness"), but beauty is the most appropriate characterization of this release. All the musicians seem to be extremely talented. The keyboards and percussion should be given a special mention. I assume that "Night Thoughts" is a worthy contribution to Cold Meat release list. Highly recommended. Band contact: [email protected]. (Krasniy)

GRENOUER - "Gravehead"
Sound Age Productions
Rating: 9.5/10

This Russian act has long ago gained a cult status in their Motherland and now they are hitting the international underground scene with their masterpieces. I expected this album to be great, but I couldn't even think that it would be SO immensely magnificent. I find it utterly perfect in all terms and contexts. Impeccable from the sound production and every single riff to the cover artwork and appearance. Musically, "Gravehead" represents mystical and atmospheric Death Metal, incorporated with multiple elements from metal/non-metal genres. Every song on this MC bears a unique and irrepeatable character. The only shortcoming here are the ineptly handled clean vocals on "Alone in the Dark". I personally find the opening track "The Time Spool" as the most remarkable one. But that doesn't mean that the other eight are less inspiring. It's pointless to describe the advantages of this release. Just get it and you'll never be sorry for that. All hail Russia and GRENOUER! Contact these guys immediately at [email protected] (Krasniy; 30.05.2001)

GRENOUER - "The Odour O'Folly"
Sound Age Productions
Rating: 9/10

This is the second GRENOUER album, dated 2001. Frankly, I thought this band has evoluted into something death-n-roll'ish when I just got this album. At least such song-titles as "Your Beast Tonight" , "Skittle Man", "Death Ought to Wait for Me" and others insinuated that. However, my supposition was completely wrong. "The Odour O'Folly" (a weird name for a Brutal Death Metal album, isn't it) comes as much more violent and enraged if compared to their debut "Gravehead", released in 1999 in MC format. The music as I have already mentioned, became even more obscure and destructive (possibly due to those groovy, mind-torturing riffs). All keyboards and acoustic passages are gone into a black abyss and something tells me they'll never return. The overall speed is average and it only contributes to the massive heaviness of this album. There's one more remarkable element here: "The Odour..." features a live cover of A-HA's "Take on Me". Don't know if it suits here or not. However, it is brilliantly performed in a reworked Death Metallish manner and shows how tight GRENOUER team is in performing live. A must! [email protected] (Krasniy; 30.05.2001)

GRENOUER - "Border of Misty Times"
Metal Agen Records
Rating: 6.5/10

I was miserably wrong about naming GRENOUER's "Gravehead" album the debut one, being unaware of "Border of Misty Times" at that time, which was released back in 1996 via Moscow based Metal Agen recs. I decided to review this ancient output in order to trace GRENOUER's evolution from 1996 to 2001. Musicwise "Border..." brings forth an impact of finely crafted mid-paced Death Metal. All members show a great deal of musicianship and professionalism, but the lacking element here is originality. It's absolutely absent. You just don't have that inspiring feeling while listening. Anyhow, I can't say I'm disappointed since it was just a debut and "Gravehead" which followed after "Border..." proved that GRENOUER are doubtlessly an outstanding act in both terms: originality and professionalism. So, I perseverantly invoke all thinking Death Metal listeners to inspect this greatly talented Russian beast. [email protected] (Krasniy; 10.08.2001)

GROG "Odes to the Carnivorous"
Shock Wave Records (now renamed to Warpath Records)
Rating: 7/10

It's the first time I am listening to this Portuguese brutal Death Metal band. However, they can never be called newcomers. The band has been active since 1991, having spawned two full-lenght releases and numerous demos/promos/7" so far. "Odes..." features ten mid-lenght tracks of rapid Death Metal backed up by inhuman growling vocals. It's quite enjoyable, but it gets rather dullish in a while due to the overall rhytmical monotony. Anyhow, it is doubtless that GROG elaborated their own style of Grind/Death Metal through all these years. Recommended to Grind maniacs. (Krasniy; 19.07.2001)

GURKKHAS - "Engraved in Blood, Flesh and Souls"
Massacre Records
Rating: 9/10

GURKKHAS - brutal Death Metal warriors hailing from France. This band has got a rich biographical history: formed in 1990, the guys have released numerous demos/promos, a few videos and three long-plays. "Engraved in Blood, Flesh and Souls" is their first release on Massacre. What the listener can find on this CD is: intense, violent old-school Death Metal with misanthropic/antichristian conception. The first resemblances that came to my mind while listening to "Engraved..." were SINISTER and late VADER: the same brutality, energy and aggression. The album is well produced and professionally played. I am sincerely glad that this truly non-trendy act after 10 years of musicianship has finally released a full-length album on a major label. I recommend this album to all Death Metal fans out there, especially to INCANTATION and SINISTER diehards. Get it. (Krasniy)

HAGALAZ' RUNEDANCE "Volven"
Well of Urd / Hammerheart Records
Rating: 9/10

Andrea Haugen, the spiritual mistress behind this neo-folkloric act is without doubts a highly talented individual and the ten tracks present on "Volven" will prove my statement to anyone who's not deaf. The variable soundscapes which she creates, carry the listener's conscience to the ancient ancestrial lands and spectral worlds beyond. Miraculous singing, shamanic acoustic and wind instruments as well as flutes and bagpipes create an unreapeatable atmosphere of mental flight. This is most characteristic to such tracks as "Seeker Divine" and "On Wings of Rapture". The last track which is a remixed version of "On Wings..." features electric guitars, techno sampling and alike modern features. For open-minded and thinking individuals only. (Krasniy; 19.07.2001)

HATRED - "The Offering"
self-released / Demolition Records
Rating: 9.5/10

One more outstanding act coming from the US! HATRED are a Virginian four-piece practising Death Metal. Formed for more than a decade ago, these guys managed to unleash their debut full-lenght only in 2000 (the one reviewed). The musical concept this band promotes, represents intense high-speed Death Metal handled in the European manner. The brightest element of this release is doubtlessly, its musical originality, which most of DM lost long ago. You will understand what I mean if you check out this CD. Some clean guitar and vocal parts can be found on several tracks. Take a special look at "Trust No One", it sounds as a specific ballad. It is obvious that the technical level of each musician is above high since they've been professionally instrumentalizing for more that 10 years so far. The production is also top-notch. No pretensions in this context. However, the lyrics are written in a manner which seems to be primitive to me. That's why I dropped half of a point. Despite this minor fault, my overall impressions are merely positive. HATRED deserve to be heard and listened to worldwide. I expect the follow-up to their debut impatiently. Get in touch directly with the band if you're interested in this great piece of quality music: [email protected] (Krasniy)

HORRID - "Blasphemic Creatures" MCD
Behind the Mask Productions
Rating: 7/10

This is the first time I hear about this Italian band. The reviewed MCD delivers 4 tracks of high-speed European school Death Metal, recorded at the notorious Sunlight studio. Musically, "Blasphemic Creatures" sounds as a cross of early DEICIDE and FLESHCRAWL of "Bloodred Massacre" times. All in all this is a very decent and enjoyable release, however, it gets quite tedious sometimes due to its monotony. Another arraignment of mine is that Tomas Skogsberg (engineering producer on this release) just didn't work out well this time since the sounding quality could be much clearer and more comprehensive. HORRID will release their debut CD via Deadsun Records this autumn. I hope they improve their sound and fix up their faults. Band contact: [email protected] (Krasniy; 30.05.2001)

HORRID - "Reborn In Sin"
Dead Sun Records
Rating: 8/10

This is the debut Italy's HORRID full-lenght release and it's doubtlessly much stronger than their "Blasphemic Creatures" MCD. Recorded in Abyss studio, this album represents a soundscape of extremely brutal Death Metal, mostly mid-paced though. I can trace obvious parralels with FLESHCRAWL circa "Bloodred Massacre". Some very solid guitar sound is also a huge plus (remember the way guitars sounded on HYPOCRISY's "Osculum Obscenum", same case here). All in all, a must for European school DM fans. (Krasniy; 21.08.2001)

IGNORABIMUS - "Dab Da Zorp"
Guano Records
Rating: 6/10

Estonian act, this time it's the debut release of IGNORABIMUS, a mixture of Death/Doom/Gothic/Progressive Metal. Well, what can I say... It's well played, recorded, produced and packaged, but the creative side doesn't impress much. Each track, when reviewed separately leaves a positive feeling, but when in the context of the album, it simply seems boring as hell. Sometimes, one can hear original ideas like on "Bazaar" and "Ode To The Joy", orient inspired riffs are magnificent. Especially pleasant sound the grunting vocals: juicy and deep, but that's a regular thing for Doom Metal. Basically, IGNORABIMUS don't lack originality: session choir singing is great, but while listening to "Dab Da Zorp" I simply couldn't get rid of boredom and "deja vu" ("entendu", in this case) symptom, all stuff of this kind has been played and practised in Doom Metal realm for many many times and years as well. May be, I'm not the proper kind of listener for IGNORABIMUS. Anyway, I'm sure that this album will be found attractive by CREMATORY/THEATRE OF TRAGEDY/late THERION/THE GATHERING fans. Contact the label for the CD: Guano Records. (Krasniy)

IMPALED - "The Dead Shall Dead Remain"
Necropolis Records / DeathVomit Records
Rating: 9/10

A while ago I thought that EXHUMED's "In the Name of Gore" featured the sickest cover artwork in the history of metal music, but the artwork of IMPALED's "The Dead..." beats everything. I'm not going to describe it (just because I'm afraid that I'll vomit if I start writing about it), but take my word, I've never seen anything half as perverted as that in my whole life (intrigued, huh?). By the way, there's one more element that links both of the aforementioned bands: IMPALED's line-up includes ex-EXHUMED members. Anyhow, enough delineating the concomitant features, let us pass to the music. Truthfully, I had expected "The Dead..." to sound way more primitive and straight-forward, therefore the complexive diversity of riffs, structures, rhytms and solos turned out to be a pleasant surprise for me. High-pitched vocals which accompany the usual guttural growls also sound quite original. The main point here is that IMPALED don't sound as monotonous as the dominative majority of brutal death/gore bands does. This band sounds surprisingly more melodic. Musically "The Dead..." is not as brutal as EXHUMED's efforts; I believe that the most appropriate "analog" in this context might be early CARCASS. However, IMPALED still remain very sick, especially lyrically, leaving EXHUMED far behind. The band's lyrical concept seems to be very condolatory to such a rare (hopefully) phenomenon as coprophilism and such songs as "Immaculate Defecation" and "Fecal Rites" serve as an undeniable proof to my conjecture. As a conclusion I'll allow myself to admit that IMPALED is the most perverted, sick and pathological band in the whole California. All gore-metal fans, get this CD, play it, read the lyrics and then either relieve your stomach or blow your brains out. It is doubtless that "The Dead..." would be a huge contribution to the musical library of any metal diehard worldwide. Killer stuff for metal maniacs. (Krasniy)

IMPALED - "Choice Cuts"
Necropolis Records / DeathVomit Records
Rating: 8.5/10

IMPALED are back with a new session of grinding sickness. "Choice Cuts" features tons of previoulsy unavailable or rare stuff such as the tracks from their split 7" with ENGORGED, several demo-tracks ("From Here to Colostomy" demo-tape) and two cover versions of CARCASS and IMPETIGO, both of which are excellently performed. By the way, the initial release date of this effort was postponed due to the manufacturer's refusal to print the cover inlays which depict a newly born infant with his blood-covered head being chopped down. As you see, these boys still keep it sick as usual. "Choice Cuts" is doubltlessly a must for all IMPALED diehards. (Krasniy)

INFERNAL - "Ritual Humiliation"
Jethro Song Records
Rating: 9/10

Arghhhhhh!!! This is what I call True Death Metal. INFERNAL is a well established Brazilian band that's been around since 1989 and all I can say about them is that these folks rule supremely! "Ritual..." features an hour of top-notch and fast-paced Death Metal in the very vein of INCANTATION and their compatriots - KRISIUN. Providing an avalanche of diabolical riffs, bestial drumming, terrifying vocals and crystal-clear production, this CD is a must for all US Death Metal freaks. Watch out not to miss this outstanding piece of INFERNAL Death Metal. [email protected] (Krasniy; 06.06.2001)

INHUMATE - "Growth"
Grind Your Soul Productions
Rating: 8/10

This French act has been around since 1990 and "Growth" is their third full-lenght album eversince. Truthfully, some facts about the band's bio simply stunned me, one of which being that the line-up hasn't changed since 1994 (!). I assume, you won't argue that this tendency is way too rare in the Grind/Death genre. "Growth" provides 30 minutes of intense fast-paced brutal Death Metal edging with Grindcore violence. The blastbeating parts heavily remind me of Polish DEAD INFECTION, the grind gods of all times. Featuring technical, well-executed musicianship and irreproachable production, this release will definitely assert INHUMATE's position in the European metal underground. The only meaningful drawback of this release are the grunting vocals, sounding sort of bleak. I suppose that the lyrics deal with social themes; just check out such titles as "Underground", "Clock", "Time", "The Golden Cage", "Copyright" etc. The band's concept should be given a special mention: each album represents a period of the human life. Previous two CDs were entitled "Internal Life" (pre-birth period) and "Ex-Pulsion" (the process of birth). The following releases will bear the titles "Maturity", "The Fifth Season", "Death" and "Eternal Life", last one representing total death and armageddon. I, personally, feel somehow intrigued about this musical chain. As a generalization, I'll state that INHUMATE is a worthy band with worthy stuff and I do hope for their bright future and further evolution. Contact the band: [email protected]. (Krasniy)

IZAKARON - "Chaoschrist"
Metal Agen Records
Rating: 5/10

What is this supposed to be? COVENANT's "Nexus Polaris: Part II"??? Actually, Russian IZAKARON deliver a fine piece of impeccably performed and engineered sympho Black Metal. However, the most appropriate characterization for this band's "art" is pure plagiarism. Obviously, the greatest achievement of this five-piece band was to rip bands like COVENANT and OLD MAN'S CHILD off in a highly professional manner. Just check out the opening track "Hunting on Troyan Path" and you'll get my point. Anyhow, IZAKARON's stuff will surely appear as balm for those who despise THE KOVENANT and miss the old COVENANT. (Krasniy; 08.11.01)

JUDAS ISCARIOT - "Dethroned, Conquered and Forgotten" MCD
Red Stream Records
Rating: 9/10

"Dethroned..." is at the moment the latest release unleashed by Akhenaten, solitary warrior behind this undeniably TRUE act from U.S. Once again Akhenaten demonstrates to the underground that the primary unholy ideals of Black Metal can remain unexposed to the neophyte ideological trends that have flooded the dark musical realms nowadays. The CD layout is executed in monochrome minimalistic style, the way Fenriz & co used to do in middle nineties, just a black cover and Akhenaten's photo on it. I really like it. "Dethroned..." strikes the listeners' ears as the audial essence of the abysmal coldness, unholy hate, antichristian mysanthropy and pure nihilism. Evident parallels can be drawn with DARKTHRONE (circa "Transilvanian Hunger"), early GORGOROTH and "Filosofem"-era BURZUM. The sound lacks any trace of production, I bet it was recorded in domiciliary conditions. However, my position is that it's the only way for this kind of music to be recorded, true underground should stay under (the) ground. "Dethroned..." is the most brutal JUDAS ISCARIOT effort at the moment (and actually, the strongest one, by my opinion). Get your hands on this. It will blast your ears. (Krasniy)

KALM / ASSAMALLA - "Igaveseks Malestama Moistetud" split CD
Guano Records
Rating: KALM - 7/10 ASSAMALLA - 9/10

The first thing that pleased me about this split was its design and artwork, great job. Both of these bands sound much alike, that's not a surprise: the same producer and studio commonly affect the sound (in quite a professional way, I should say). Both play atmospheric Black Metal with various progressive/vanguard influences. Both are of Estonian origin. Both RULE.

KALM - Raw and relentless Nordic Black Metal with keyboards and industrial thingies with great production. The music is grim, cold and fierce... yes, FIERCE is the most appropriate definition, but at the same time it is diverse. Even a sophisticated BM fan will find something for himself on this CD: ultrafast blastbeating parts, mid-paced eerie parts, inhuman high-pitched vocals, clean recitatives, acoustic passages and electronic industrialized rawness a la late SATYRICON. It is too bad the drums are programmed on a drum-machine (rather poor programming, I should say), the music would sound more natural with a real drummer. Unfortunately, KALM will not unleash anything after this split, because their mastermind died in a car accident in April. Rest in peace, Alan.

ASSAMALLA - Mid-paced symphonic Black Metal with obvious early-DIMMU BORGIR (circa "Stormblast") influences. ASSAMALLA is a bit more diverse than KALM and deep, I would say. Most recommended track is "...Kes Lahkunud Ukteise Sudameist", a truly outstanding song. ASSAMALLA leaves purely positive emotions. Strongly recommended to the fans of melancholic/romantic Black Metal. By the way, read the interview with this very promising band in this issue.

I assure you won't regret if you contact Guano Rec. for the CD Guano Records. (Krasniy)

KATAR - "Paradigma Digitized"
More Hate Productions
Rating: 6/10

KATAR is one of Lazar's (ROSSOMAHAAR frontman) side-projects. Musically, this output represents a weird blend of industrial sounds and samples with raw Black Metal. Lazar characterizes it as a mix of BURZUM and RAMMSTEIN. Conceptwise this project is tied to sex themes and all sorts of perversions. Alex of TALES OF DARKNORD did all the vocals here. Not for everyone. More Hate email: [email protected] (Krasniy; 23.01.2002)

KISS OF DEATH - "Stronger Than Before"
Rating: 3.5/10

All right, this time there's definitely not much to say about this release. KISS OF DEATH play a rough mixture of old-school thrash with hardcore, sort of thrashcore, you see. Stuff that impressed me on this album is the intro for the third track and the drumwork. That is all that can be added to the advantages of this CD. This album totally lacks originality, fresh ideas, intellect and, what is most important - taste . Man, these clean screaming vocals sound so stupid and disgusting! I hardly listened this album to the end. I do not recommend this album to anyone with a sense of good taste, don't waste your mind and money on this senseless garbage. It's not worth of it. (Krasniy)

KRIEG - "The Church" MCD
Cicatrix / Red Stream Records
Rating: -

I'm lost. I'm completely lost and confused. I won't even rate this CD. Let me explain myself: "The Church" features 5 tracks of total Black Metal blasphemy in the very vein of KRIEG. This is doubtlessly an outstanding example of what True Black Metal should be like in terms of ideology and attitude. However, I'm afraid that Akhenaten (JUDAS ISCARIOT, SARCOPHAGUS), who ingeneered this output has drastically overdone his work in making "The Church" sound as an orthodox BM release. The result being that this MCD sounds much, much rougher than DARKTHRONE's "Transilvanian Hunger". Can you imagine that? Neither could I before having heard "The Church". I suppose that this mini-effort should be remixed and remastered, since it sounds way too True. Too True even for the most dedicated BM puritists. Only for diehards! (Krasniy; 18.05.2001)

KRONOS - "Titan's Awakening"
Warpath Records
Rating: 8,5/10

Warpath records keep stunning the underground dwellers with the releases of French Death Metal bands. Unfortunately, I'm not familiar with this combo's bio, since it wasn't included into the promo kit, but I suppose it's their debut full-lenght. Anyhow, what these French warriors deliver is totally insane but technical ultra-fast Death Metal performed with ultimate aggression and violence. And do I need to mention that all instruments here are handled with absolute professionalism? BROKEN HOPE and SEVERE TORTURE diehards will piss with blood when hearing this. Hail KRONOS! (Krasniy; 23.01.2002)

KULT OV AZAZEL - "Triumph of Fire"
Arctic Music Group
Rating: 9/10

It is doubtless that the US have been experiencing a strong Metal renaissance for the last two years. The aforementioned revival has most to do with the so-called USBM trend which seems to be obtaining new followers each day. The reviewed effort of these american Black Metallers is their full-lenght debut coming after a significant number of demos/promos and a split release with their countrymates KRIEG. From the very first seconds of the opening track "Le Messe Noir" K.O.A. spill out the waves of audial aggression by the means of old-school fast-paced Black Metal with slight intrusions from Death Metal realm and complete absence of any guitarless effects. Basically, these guys sound very close to the European representatives of raw Black Metal genre. The most obvious comparison which at once came to my mind was the cult DARK FUNERAL. This parallel especially deals with K.O.A. vocalist's furious singing manner which is almost identical to Caligula's relentless style. Musically, K.O.A. heavily remind of MAYHEM circa "De Mysteriis dom Sathanas" and that's a huge plus indeed. Highly professional rhytm-section should be given a special mention. It's too bad the drummer is only a session member. Hopefully, he'll keep playing in the band. However, the most appealing side of "Triumph..." is the conceptional and musical wholeness Xaphan & co. managed to capture in the context of the whole album. This release is an excellent contribution to the musical collection of any true BM fan and a huge fist in the face of God. Band's label: http://www.arcticmusicgroup.com (Krasniy)

LIEGE LORD - "Master Control" (re-released version)
Metal Blade Records
Rating: 10/10

The masters of US Power Metal are back with a blast. Actually, this is a re-release of their "Master Control" CD initially unleashed in 1988 (also via Metal Blade). It is obvious that this band shares the same status with MANOWAR, OVERKILL, HELLOWEEN and other masters of this genre despite the fact that the importance of LIEGE LORD in the establishment of Power/Thrash Metal scene still remains greatly under-rated. I find it pointless to describe the essential elements of "Master Control", since they are evident, at least they should be for any dedicated headbanger. I'll just mention that it features a stunning "Kill the King" cover version (originally performed by RAINBOW). The last thing to be said is that LIEGE LORD's split up in 1990 was a great loss for the band and worldwide Metal scene in general. I assume they would be no less famous than METALLICA now if that wouldn't have happened. I'll finish this review by admitting that I fully agree with Heavy Oder Was?! magazine which issued the following: "Master Conrol was and is one of the best metal albums ever." (Krasniy)

LIVIDITY - "The Age of Clitorial Decay"
Erebos Productions
Rating: 7.5/10

This one is a piece of sick Death Metal from Illinois. Heavily reminding of DYING FETUS circa "Infatuation with Malevolence", this album features nine tracks which are simply soaked up with perversion and filth. This mostly deals with those sex-inspired lyrics. Fancy these titles: "Anal Action Wife", "Stench of Virginity", "Sodomy Ritual". A complete disaster! These guys are terrible sexists. By the way, I'm not sure if this album is still available as long as Erebos prod is now RIP. Therefore, I advise you to get in touch directly with Dave of LIVIDITY: [email protected] (Krasniy; 29.06.2001)

LUFTWAFFE - "Live in Feraland"
self-released
Rating: 6/10

"Live in Feraland" is a self-released live album of this controversial and scandalous US act, often being accused in nazi condolences. Basically, this CD features 7 live tracks, recorded at a show in St. Louis plus 2 studio tracks. Stuff featured is taken from their "International Condemnation" and "The World That Is Lost" demos (see "Demo Reviews" section). So I guess it would be excessive to describe the material itself. However, this effort comes with a notable drawback: this is poor sound engineering during the show, which was quite annoying for my ears. Presentation does count a lot after all... [email protected] (Krasniy; 07.06.2001)

LUPERCALIA - "Soehrimnir"
self-released / World Serpent Distribution
Rating: 5/10

One more ambient act coming from Italy. A solely instrumental debut album, focused upon medieval melodies. Good when you are trying to fall asleep. Not more. [email protected] (Krasniy; 19.06.2001)

MEMORIAL - "Enter My Megaron"
Baphomet Records / Red Stream
Rating: 8.5/10

This CD was supposed to arrive two months ago and I had already lost any hope to get my hands on it when I finally discovered it in my mailbox. MEMORIAL specialize in raw nordic Black Metal. Evident parallels with early IMMORTAL and DARKTHRONE circa "A Blaze in the Northern Sky" can be drawn in this context. Featuring some great memorable riffs, grim vocals, acoustic tunes with occasional synth touches and absolutely maniacal drumming (sometimes reminding of the drumming style on IMMORTAL's "Pure Holocaust"), this album will leave mainly positive impressions to any true BM fan. I also liked the way the CD inlay is designed: it is executed in a very obscure and enigmatic style with a great taste. Overally, "Enter..." is a very good release, especially for a debut. However, it is not deprived of drawbacks: guitars sound too weak and low from time to time and the production is way too dirty. Here's one more thing that should be mentioned: you must have noticed that this longplay was released by Baphomet Recs which is being run by the notorious Killjoy (NECROPHAGIA, EIBON, RAVENOUS, VIKING CROWN). Take a listen of this album if you are into old-school nordic Black Metal. I liked it. (Krasniy)

MORTEM - "Filicide"
Metal Agen Records / Musickness Russia
Rating: 6/10

One more Death Metal band originating from Russia. MORTEM deliver intense and brutal grind/DM a-la early CANNIBAL CORPSE and CARCASS. "Filicide" is their second full-lenght, it contains 8 tracks lasting for approximatively 30 minutes. Generally, this output left me with positive feelings. However, the sound of drums is purely annoying. Truthfully, I still haven't figured out whether it's a drum machine or a real drummer. This band has definitely got a strong potential. This mostly deals with their complex guitar riffs and structures. I guess these folks should intensify their rhytm-section and it'll be just fine then. (Krasniy; 06.11.01)

NAIZNANKU - "Ostatki Sobytii" (Pieces of Events) MC
Moral Insanity Productions
Rating: 8.5/10

Moral Insanity prod is a division of Belarussian TFA, which specializes in releasing all sorts of unusual stuff. NAIZNANKU, which means "inside out" in English, is a band that fully fits its label's format. These folks create absolutely avantgarde, unpredictable and absolutely twisted jazz with alternative rock elements. A very original release in all terms. Will please both: metal and non-metal music lovers. Get your copy at once at: [email protected] (Krasniy; 09.11.01)

NEGLECTED FIELDS - "Mephisto Lettonica"
Scarlet / Odium Music
Rating: 9/10

Feels good to see more and more worthy bands coming from Eastern Europe. This time it's Latvia. An absolutely stunning MC release we have here. "Mephisto..." was recorded in the renown Abyss studio with Peter Tagtgren. As a result this album features 9 tracks, where each one bears its own character and style. Basically, "Mephisto..." represents a fusion of mid-paced Death, Black and Doom Metal with massive abundance of symphonic orchestrations and acoustic insertions. Musically it reminds simultaneously of such acts as OLD MAN'S CHILD, THERION circa "Theli" and slightly CRADLE OF FILTH in its early days. I'm convinced that all open-minded BM/DM fans will be interested in getting this fine piece of Metal Art. Order your copy at: [email protected] (Krasniy; 17.07.2001)

NEOTRUTH - "32' 42'' Short Infinity"
Metal Agen Records
Rating: 8/10

As most of the bands signed to Metal Agen NEORUTH originate from Russia. The city of Tula, to be more specific. Such an odd album name is specified by the album's lenght. This six-piece specializes in a meditative and atmospheric cross between death and doom metal genres of European school. I advise this output to those who are getting tired of musical aggression, but still can't deny it. Worthy stuff. (Krasniy; 08.11.01)

NOMENMORTIS - "How I Learn To Bleed... For The Things I wish To Forget"
Jackhammer Music
Rating: 7/10

NOMENMORTIS is a Slovakian Death Metal combo, conducted by our zine's contributor Martin Lukac. This is their debut full-lenght and what they offer here can be categorized as brutal Death Metal with sick vocals slightly reminding of early MORBID ANGEL. Sounds standard to you? Well, I guess it is so. However, if you are into aggressive and technical DM, this one's for you. Those vocals are utterly sick. (Krasniy; 29.06.2001)

NOVA - "Utopica Musa"
Cold Meat Industry
Rating: 8/10

This Italian vanguard duet offers 12 tracks of melancholic beautiness, captured by the means of keyboards, guitar touches and magnificent soprano vocals by Chiara Ferrari. Strictly speaking, "Utopica..." is an ambient/neo-classic release, showing a great amplitude of pure atmospheres and moods. I like it and I guess that any open-minded individual will appreciate NOVA as highly as I did. Somehow I feel that their next output will be even more impressive. Recommended. (Krasniy; 19.06.2001)

NUCLEAR WINTER - self-titled MCD
self-released
Rating: 7/10

I'm afraid this effort is a bit old now (released in 1998), but I guess it's still appropriate to be reviewed since the band hasn't unleashed anything new at the moment (March 2001). This MCD embodies five tracks of intense mid-tempo Death Metal in the very vein of BOLT THROWER. Truthfully, I'm not into this kind of stuff. However, NW still manage to sound surprisingly fresh even if considering the fact that several passages seem to have simply been taken of some BOLT THROWER songs. It's notable that these guys are worthy in handling their instruments and doing arrangements. I'm sort of displeased with the vocalist's manner of singing which appeals too primitive, but it's not essential after all. A MUST for anyone willing to get to know with the Greek Death Metal scene better. [email protected] (Krasniy)

ORDAINED - "The Second Coming"
Sinternational Records
Rating: 6/10

This is the second full-lenght of this Virginia-based act. Don't know what the first one sounded like. This one, however, shows some great potential to compose and perform material in the vein of older KING DIAMOND with some hardly notable hardcore touches. This stuff is mostly mid-paced, coming with a tight rhytm-section and some truly heavy riffs, but there are also some faster passages which touch the borders of Death Metal genre. In what regards the production and musicianship, this is a very decent release. All in all, "The Second..." is a must for all Heavy Metal fans, though, I'm not pleased with those shitty rap-like vocals at all. The vocalist should do something about his singing manner, since it comes as quite irritating sometimes. (Krasniy; 27.05.2001)

PAGAN HELLFIRE - "A Voice from Centuries Away"
self-released
Rating: 9.5/10

The foundation of this canadian act dates back to 1995 when Incarnatus, the main force behind PH and a few of his soulmates started this project to express themselves by the means of raw unholy Black Metal. After the release of several demo tapes in 1996 and 1998, the band (actually being a one-man project already) released the debut full-lenght CD, where Incarnatus played all instruments and did all the arrangements and vocals. Now, let us take a closer look at the music itself: "A Voice..." represents fast/mid-paced Black Metal of old Norwegian school, appraising negativity and misanthropy. I should say that Incarnatus is a great instrumentalist: all instruments are handled with professionalism and good technical approach. Grim, unholy vocals should be given a special mention. Somehow they remind me of of Fenriz's rasp singing on "Thornspawn Chalice" and "Total Death" songs featured on ISENGARD's "Hostmorke" CD. Black songs on "A Voice..." are complemented by a few enigmatically beautiful instrumental tracks played on acoustic guitars and piano. Clear and professional production of this release only improves the overall listening impression. "A Voice..." is an excellent release in the terms of musicianship and creative sincerity proving that even in 2000 there can be found releases that embody true nordic unholiness and still sound original. Everyone, if you care about the true underground, get it. I promise, you won't regret. Contact the band: [email protected] (Krasniy)

Paul Nelson - "Look"
Big Wave Buz Records
Rating: -

I have to start this review by stating that "Look" is far and away from being a Metal release. Some of you may wonder why it's reviewed here. Hmm... Some, but not those who've been into Metal for years (look at the artist's name once again if you are still wondering). Anyhow, I'll give a short description of Paul's personality and activities: being Steve Vai's one of the first students, he later participated as lead-guitarist in such acts as ANVIL, DIO, STEEL HEART, ANTHRAX and of course LIEGE LORD. Paul was also featured as session guitarist on numerous albums of various bands/artists and thousands of shows. He finally came up with a solo album in 2001. Representing a 100% instrumental canvas, "Look" demonstrates utterly exceptional skills of this renown artist. Basically, only a single track here can be regarded as a Heavy Metal creation ("Full Blast"). Other ones appear as Hard Rock/Blues/Funk (hehe... definitely not Fortitude's specialty). Truthfully, I feel completely lost about giving a rate to this release, thus I simply avoided any mark in this case. Decide for yourselves. My position is that "Look" is a doubtlessly a notable effort coming from a great multi-style instrumentalist, which is highly recommended to all old-time metallers, open minded entities and guitar players as well. (Krasniy)

PHANTASMAGORY- "Odd Sounds"
The Flaming Arts / Moon Records
Rating: -

This Ukrainian act can never be characterized as mediocre. This cassette release which was simultaneously unleashed by two East-European labels (TFA - Belarus; Moon - Ukraine) brings forth seven tracks of highly intellectual and experimental Doom metal with obvious jazz influences. Definitely an extremely original and bizzare output. I fail to trace any parallels in this case. However, I decided not to rate "Odd Sounds" due to its poor sound quality. Let us hope that PHANTASMAGORY will find a proper sound engineer next time who will be able to emphasize properly the originality of their music. Order the official cassette at: [email protected] (Krasniy; 18.08.2001)

POSTMORTEM - "The Call of the Sea"
More Hate Productions
Rating: 7.5/10

It took more than 2 years for this Estonian band to release this album and they finally found this Moscow based label in 2000. Strictly speaking, "The Call..." is a traditional (European) Death Metal release with occasional synth spices. DISMEMBER and ALTAR fans will doubtlessly be glad to check this out. The album features 8 well-crafted tracks with lyrics dedicated to the beauty of the Baltic Sea and war themes. Three extra tracks come as bonus tracks. One of which is of their own composement and the other two are cover versions of KING DIAMOND's "Into the Convent" and LED ZEPPELIN's "The Ocean". They are nicely handled but somehow they sound too bleak to me, especially "Into the Convent". The funny thing is that the guys inserted a blast part into "The Ocean", which breathes some life into it. All in all, my impression is positive and I guess you'll heed "The Call of the Sea" if those screamy guitars won't bother you. (Krasniy; 02.07.2001)

PRIMEVAL "Scorn of Incubus" MCD
self-released / Texas Death Syndicate
Rating: 9/10

The roots of this Texas based act take us back to early 80s and its forerunner, a thrash metal act RELAYER. Victor Fernandez, the mastermind behind PRIMEVAL used to be RELAYER's mainman as well. As time passed, leaving no chances for thrash metal progression, RELAYER collapsed and Vic formed PRIMEVAL in early ninetees. The band initially possessed a totally different line-up than it has today, but it was destined to be changed promptly. Due to a tragic car wreckage in 1995, Victor lost his two brothers (one of them handled drums in PRIMEVAL), while he himself was left in coma. Having recovered, Victor reformed the band and this is when the real things started. "Scorn of Incubus" is their third release so far. Featured are 4 original tracks of violent Death Metal plus 3 bonus tracks, one of them being an ancient RELAYER track recorded in 1985. PRIMEVAL's music is mostly mid-paced, however, slow and fast-tempo parts aren't a rarity as well. Some terrifying astral-like guitar generated passages contribute to deepening the atmosphere of infernal nightmare. Very sinister, anxious and I'd say "punishing". You'll get my point if you listen to "The Puritain" and "Scorn of Incubus". Definitely the strongest tracks here. There is, however, a shortcoming related to the production quality: guitar sound is sort of weak and slightly lacks expression. Fortunately, this drawback doesn't bother me much, since these guys are delivering a fine piece of original Death Metal instead of musically worshipping SUFFOCATION and IMMOLATION as most US bands do. The album's artwork also deserves a special mention. Good style, fine taste and complete conceptual integrality. The promo copy comes with a great mid-sized poster. PRIMEVAL is doubtlessly not a pass-by band. Order the MCD at: [email protected] (Krasniy; 19.07.2001)

PSYCHOTOGEN - "Perverse and Unnatural Practices"
Self-released / Bring Out Your Dead Productions
Rating: 8.5/10

Formed in 1999 by ex-PESSIMIST members, PSYCHOTOGEN have released a demo and a full-lenght album so far. I believe, you already have a hint of how this band sounds. Well, yes, these folks do sound alike with PESSIMIST, however, they are less straightforward and much more twisted. This deals both with lyrics, that are totally mad and completely unpredictable music. Just check out the title track or "Death Of The Old Ways" and you'll get my point. Another thing that impressed me is that the vocalist Rob Kline is going to receive a doctorate degree in forensic psychology (!). The promo sheet says that this guy spent the last year working as a psychologist in Baltimore's Super-Max prison. It seems that Rob knew what he described in the lyrics. "Perverse..." is doubtlessly a serious output, backed up by top notch musicianship and some utterly sick intelligence. Available at amazon.com (Krasniy; 20.08.2001)

ROSSOMAHAAR "Imperium Tenebrarum"
More Hate Productions
Rating: 7/10

Quite an aged output, dating back to 1999. First release of More Hate prod. Most of you must be already aware of the musical content of "Imperium..." since it was quite a successful album and gained much respect in the whole scene. If not, then I'll try to give you the point. "Imperium..." in my view is a rawer version of DIMMU BORGIR's "Enthrone Darkness Triumphant". That's it. It's well played, mostly fast-paced, very aggressive and thoughout. Unfortunately, guitars sound too loud, shading the rhytm-section. All in all, the debut album of ROSSOMAHAAR is worth of your attention if you are into technical Death/Black and wish to get a clearer vision of Russian Black Metal scene. By the way, their second output is coming out this fall on Last Episode in Germany. The guys promise an explosion of Black Metal brutality, incomparable to "Imperium Tenebrarum" We'll see. (Krasniy; 17.07.2001)

SERBERUS - "Our Dying Grace" MCD
self-released
Rating: 7.5/10

"Our Dying Grace" is the second MCD from this Colorado based four-piece. Featuring five tracks, this output delivers some nice and tight Swedish-school Death Metal in the very vein of early IN FLAMES and AT THE GATES. I've never been a great fan of this stuff, but I like it anyway. As for SERBERUS, they definitely cannot be called innovators, but at least they are good musicians. By the way, this MCD contains a multimedia section, which features two live videos nad some backgroud info on the band. I'm sure that I'll give this CD a second listen in a while. [email protected] (Krasniy; 23.01.2002)

SOILS OF FATE - "Sandstorm"
Retribute Records
Rating: 10/10

After several demo outputs this doubtlessly outstanding Swedish band has finally released their debut CD via an English label. Basically, there haven't been any major changes since "Blood Serology", SOF demo, which precedented the album. The same aggression, highly skillful musicianship, completely inhuman vocals and brilliant production, it's all there. This CD features 7 tracks, two of which were previously represented on the aforementioned "Blood Serology" tape and offers a non-stop quantity of grind/death intensity at blastbeating speed. It's odd, but I fail to remind of any resemblances that would fit SOF format. Just check these guys yourself and you'll get the meaning of my words. Brutal! Label contact: [email protected] (Krasniy)

SOUL EROSION "Furious Mind Degeneration" MCD
Shock Wave Records (now renamed to Warpath Records)
Rating: 9/10

This young French five-piece provides twenty minutes of highly technical brutal Death Metal at extreme speed. "Furious..." is their debut output, but regardless to that, their professional level is beyond all praise. Just check out the title track which is a fine example of SF's fine musicianship. These guys definitely know how to kick all the shit out of trendy asses. Highly recommended. Order at: [email protected] (Krasniy; 18.07.2001)

STONEHENGE "Scum Brigade"
More Hate Productions
Rating: 6.5/10

Knowing STONEHENGE as a Russian Doom/Folk Metal band, I expected a piece of worthy somber music from this album. However, the album's title confused me at once. Obviously, "Scum Brigade" doesn't fit well to the aforementioned genre. The sounds of the opening track cleansed all doubts: STONEHENGE changed their style drastically. "Scum..." represents a fusion of mid-paced Heavy Metal, Hard Rock (!) with some aggressive rasp vocals. I'm sure that old timers will like this one. By the way, all music was composed by Lazar of ROSSOMAHAAR. As for me, I prefer the old STONEHENGE and such releases as "Tales of Old Britain". (Krasniy; 17.07.2001)

SUFFOCATE - "Lust for Heaven"
Erebos Productions
Rating: 8.5/10

Have you ever thought of how the most merciless and noiseful MZ.412 (remember "Submit and Obey"?) efforts would sound if blended with brutal technical Death Metal in the vein of DEEDS OF FLESH and DYING FETUS? I'm not sure about you, but as for me, I never did. However, sick Slovakian metal maniacs SUFFOCATE, managed to conduct this perilous experiment with undeniable success. Anyhow, some biographical info would be appropriate: the band was formed back in 1992, having released a few demos in the subsequent years. "Lust for Heaven" is their second full-lenght effort after "Exit 64" MC, released via Erebos prod as well. As I mentioned above, musically "Lust..." represents absolutely inhuman Death Metal with a heavy intrusion of noise/industrial elements plus some slight thrash influences. Regarding the lyrical content: how do you like such names as "Shit is All...", "I Have No Right", "No More!"? I haven't had the chance to read the lyrics, however, the titles insinuate some sort of non-conformist/antisocial background. A few words about the technical side of this release: it's perfectly recorded and profesionally performed, the guys are great musicians, especially the drummer. So, all Death Metal diehards, contact www.erebosproductions.com if you are interested to get your hands on this earshreding effort. Highly recommended. (Krasniy).

TALES OF DARKNORD - "Dismissed"
More Hate productions
Rating: 7/10

"Dismissed" is the second More Hate release after ROSSOMAHAAR's "Imperium Tenebrarum". This album features mostly technical mid-paced Death Metal with vocals reminding of Chris Barnes' best days. Nice music, nice lyrics, remarkable vocals, but completely bleak production. Adding more low tones would be appropriate in this case. All in all, my mark is positive. (Krasniy; 25.10.01)

THRON' - "Seductions of the Unbaptized Darkness"
Metal Agen Records
Rating: 9/10

THRON' (now renamed to T.H.R.O.N.) is a Moscow based band with a history of a decade. However, their roots lay in the eastern land of Khazahstan (!). The band used to play in various styles, ranging from slavonic Black Metal to ultra guttural Grindcore. The reviewed release is actually their debut full-lenght, which was precedented by numerous rehearsal/promo/demo tapes ("Throne will be Ours", "Here Lies Paganism", etc). "Seductions..." is quite an aged album since it was recorded back in 1997 and released in 1998 by Eugene Aksenov of Metal Agen records (Moscow). However, the term of 4 years fails to fade the originality and strenght of this four-piece. Frankly speaking, I'm simply enchanted by this release. It's impossible to describe it in a few words. However, I'll try to give a notion: imagine vast pagan forests densely infested with fierce wolves and surrounded by an aura of Darkness. THRON' managed to capture the essence of this unholy vision by means of full-speed synth/acoustic guitar spiced Black Metal. Flawless production, technical professionalism and incomparable cold atmosphere stick the listener to this CD and keep him well glued till the end of the last track. Essential! (Krasniy; 05.11.01)

T.H.R.O.N. - "Subject to Damage"
Metal Agen Records / Musickness Russia
Rating: 7.5/10

Don't know what caused Russian THRON' to change their moicker (see the review above). Perhaps, it can be explained by the drastical change of style this band faced after the release of "Seductions...". Some blame them in poserism and betrayal of Black Metal scene, but I won't, since the guys just returned to their grind roots. "Subject..." is relatively short output (27 minutes), featuring nine tracks including two covers ("World In My Eyes" by DEPECHE MODE and " Twist the Knife (Slowly)" by NAPALM DEATH). The album was recorded in the band's own studio and the production is even better than on "Seductions...". Musically this stuff represents extremely raw and unpredictable grinding Death Metal with slight industrial intrusions. I fail to trace any musical parallels, since the music is still very original. However, I prefer the Black era of this undeniably talented act. (Krasniy; 05.11.01)

THY VEILS - "The Diaphanous Depressions"
self-released
Rating: 9.5/10

Daniel, the one behind Romanian THY VEILS must be an utterly talented musician and individual. It's the first time I hear anything from this act, however this release is not the debut one. "The Diaphanous..." provides an hour of relatively short keyboard-based interludes which capture an ample contrast of musical patterns, evoking diverse feelings, varying from meditative moods ("Thoughts", "Waiting Theme",) to mysticism and obscurity which is clearly shown on "The Depths" and "Night Desert". The latter track would be a perfect soundtrack for a dramatic movie or a RPG such as Diablo or stuff like that. The most inspiring song here is the majestic "Winds Anywhere" which left me deeply touched. All in all, this album slightly reminded me of early MORTIIS. I'm speaking of "Fodt Til A Herske" album, although "The Diaphanous..." strikes as a much more emotional and thoughtout effort. This act must be heard outside Romania, it's impeccable. All hail THY VEILS, praise the emotional ambience and support Eastern Europe! [email protected] (Krasniy; 24.05.2001)

VALHALLA - "Winterbastard"
Blacksmith Productions (Russia) / Northern Sound Records
Rating: 9/10

I wonder why is this band-name so popular? There are hundreds of metal/non-metal VALHALLAs all around the globe and most of them, at least as far as I heard, are far from being original artists. Most, but not all of them. The reviewed VALHALLA hails from the mountaneous land of Ural, Russia and performs highly atmospheric and non-standard sympho Black Metal. "Winterbastard" is the debut full-lenght of this six-piece combo and, frankly speaking, this work has deeply impressed me. The album consists of nine mid-lenght tracks. The most enchanting song here is the instrumental "Starflaming Heart of Ural", where a trumpet is applied as a background instrument. I would have given this output a 10 out of 10 if not that shitty production. It's almost of rehearsal quality. Frankly, I'm still surprised how come Finnish Northern Sound dared to release it on CD. Perhaps Mikko was stunned by the material as much as I am. All in all, "Winterbastard" is a touchy and inspiring album. It deserves your attention despite of the sound quality. I hope that the next VALHALLA's release will be handled in a proper way. (Krasniy; 06.11.01)

VARIOUS ARTISTS - "Requiems of Revulsion: a tribute to CARCASS"
Necropolis / Death Vomit Records
Rating: 9/10

Arghhh!!! Symphonies of sickness continue. CARCASS tribute is finally out. A release like this should have been done years ago. Anyway, as they say, it's better later than never. "Requiems of Revulsion" represents a compilation of 18 CARCASS cult songs performed by the notorious representatives of the contemporary Goregrind genre. Well, in fact there are 17 of them since "Pungent Excruciation" is covered twice (by NECRONY and DEAD INFECTION). I guess it's enough to enumerate bands as REGURGITATE, HAEMORRHAGE, IMPALED, EXHUMED, CATTLE DECAPITATION (what an inspiring name :)) and AVULSED to give you a hint of what is actually taking place on this CD. It's obvious that the overwhelming majority of the "tribute-payers" depict the audial sickness not worse than their gore-splattered ancestor. Such tracks as "Genital Grinder" (REGURGITATE), "Carneous Cacoffiny" (IMPALED), "Burnt to a Crisp" (CATTLE DECAPITATION) and "Exhume to Consume" (EXHUMED) are among the brightest highlights of this compilation. I was, however, disappointed by the way DEAD INFECTION and DISGORGE handled their covers. Both of them sound too flat and incomprehesive as if they recorded their stuff on some 4-track device. I had expected much more from both of these acts. Anyhow, the overall impression is morbidly great. CARCASS must be proud of such a notable follow-up to their activity. All gore maniacs, get this spine-crushing tribute. Gore forever! (Krasniy)

VARIOUS ARTISTS - "Worship JUDAS PRIEST: a tribute to JUDAS PRIEST"
Guano Records
Rating: 9/10

After KALM/ASSAMALLA and IGNORABIMUS releases that I'd managed to check out (reviews on both above in this section), Lennart of Guano Records sent me this excellent tribute. I should say that these Estonian folks definitely have an ambition and ardour. All 17 bands/artists featured on this CD are of Estonian origin, fact which makes this release an opportune guide into the Estonian underground scene. The brightest highlights of this compilation are ASSAMALLA with their Black-Metallish version of the cult "Night Crawler", ZORG ("Eat Me Alive") and METSATOLL ("Take on the World"). The last ones performed their cover through the prism of folk-metal. Some of the bands, however, turned out as great disappointments, worst of which are: HEARSE and REALM OF CARNIVORA. Their sound quality is completely incomprehensible. These bands have totally ruined the original songs with their inept approach. It's good to see they are in minority. All in all, I am extremely pleased with 90% of the music captured here. All JUDAS PRIEST fans should have this tribute in their CD collection. Take my word, it's worthy. Label contact: [email protected] (Krasniy)

VARIOUS ARTISTS - "The Dead Pit"
Dead Again Records / Prick Productions
Rating: 7/10

Dead Again and Prick prod. united 19 Brutal Death Metal bands, most of which hail from UK. 70 minutes, 28 tracks and total fucking insanity in every riff. The majority of the bands aren't well familiar to me, but some of them bear the cult status in the underground. These are: AGATHOCLES (!), DROGHEDA, MACHETAZO and INTENSE HAMMER RAGE. The other ones are: GOREROTTED (rules!), DEEPRED, PROPHECY (great stuff), INHUMATE (check out the review on their "Growth" album above in this section), REGORGE, BRAINCHOKE, ZARATHUSTRA (UK), INNER WAR, BEEF CONSPIRACY (sick!), MITHRAS and several others. All in all, this is a highly enjoyable sampler, guiding the listener into the gore-drenched depths of the UK underground. It, however, gets boring is you listen to it for more than 20 minutes in a row. So, take some breaks while cheking it out. My faves here are: AGATHOCLES "Inner Hell", PROPHECY "Tortured by Deceit", ZARATHUSTRA "The Contusions of Remorse" (nice drum sound you, guys, have!), BEEF CONSPIRACY "The Sweet Caress of a Nailgun" and of course MITHRAS with their "As the Wind Blows". Recommended. (Krasniy; 1.06.2001)

VARIOUS ARTISTS: "Masters of Murder" Sampler CD
Hammerheart Records
Rating: -

The reviewed sampler CD features the most brutal Hammerheart minions. These are MACABRE, BROKEN HOPE, DIE APOKALYPTISCHEN REITER, SEVERE TOTURE plus AETERNUS and THRONEAEON as bonus tracks. Obviously D.A.R. offer the most enjoyable and original material off their "All You Need is Love" CD, while BROKEN HOPE provide surprisingly weak and mediocre stuff from "Grotesque Blessings". SEVERE TORTURE bring forth two skull crushing tracks of ultra violent Death Metal ("Baptized in Virginal Liquid" and "Rest in Flames"). I really enjoyed those ones. I won't mention MACABRE, since I despise this act and their Dahmer worshipping ideas. AETERNUS and THRONEAEON are both worthy bands and deserve to be inspected by any DM/BM fan. (Krasniy; 19.08.2001)

VARIOUS ARTISTS: Summersampler 2001
Hammerheart Records
Rating: -

Quite a convincing sampler indeed. Featured bands are: ALAS, ANCIENT RITES, AETERNUS, REBAELLIUN and SUNSETH SPHERE as a bonus track. Total playing time: 44 minutes. The strongest act here is doubtlessly ANCIENT RITES with two tracks from their "Dim Carcosa" album. Absolutely stunning material. AETERNUS and Brazilian soldiers REBAELLIUN impressed me as well. Not much to say about ALAS besides that it's a decent sympho/doom metal band with nice female vocals. SUNSETH SPHERE provide a track from their upcoming album "Storm Before Silence" (not sure if it has been released already). Quite twisted and odd material with female vox as well and some depressive atmosphere. Didn't touch me though. (Krasniy; 20.08.2001)

VARIOUS ARTISTS: "Blazing Productions Sampler"
Blazing Productions
Rating: 7/10

This multimedia promo-disk delivered by a tiny distro/label from the Netherlands represents a compilation of 5 acts, which are currently being managed by Blazing productions. These are: ABORYM, BESTIAL MOCKERY, DEVILRY, LUGUBRE, MERRIMACK. The most notorious of the aforementioned ones is obviously Italian ABORYM with mighty Attila Csihar (ex-MAYHEM, PLASMA POOL) on vocals. This disk contains two ABORYM tracks from the newest album "Fire Walk With Us!", which is supposed to be released by Scarlet records. Definitely very strong material with completely weird industrial influences. I recommend any Black Metal fan to get his hands on this album. The remaining four bands all hail from western Europe and specialize in raw Death/Black Metal. Not much to say about them though. All in all, a worthy promo sampler. VIU DRAKH - "Take No Prisoners, Grind Them All and Leave This Hell"
MoonStorm Records
Rating: 8/10

If I'm not mistaken it's the first time I receive anything from Germany. What we have here is a blend of death and heavy metal with the addition of thrashing vocals. It's odd, but I almost fail to find any reminescenses to VIU DRAKH's music. Perhaps, REPULSION and some early SLAYER would be appropriate in this context. Every riff and passage on this full-lenght are well thoughtout and technically performed. Lasting for 35 minutes, this CD features 10 tracks where each possesses its particular structure, energy and originality. Great stuff. For Metal Maniacs only. [email protected] (Krasniy)

VLE "Book of Illusions: Chapter I"
self-released
Rating: -

Have you ever seen any Metal band (in fact, it's a one-man project) with a name as weird and incomprehensive as this one? Some decipherment would be quite appropriate here: "eViL onE". Get the point? Good. Formally, "Book..." is a demo release, but I decided to review it in Album Section since it totally complies with all standards characteristic for full-lenght releases and even exceeds them all. Speaking about the musical context, "Book of Illusions" is a 100% experimental and improvisational soundscape, offering a great variety of atmospheres. I'm not going to attach any cliches to this band. It's beyong them. It's beyond all ratings. I'll just admit that it's Metal. VLE music is Majestic, Inspiring, Grand, Monumental, Boundless, Timeless. What other adjectives do you need to get its meaning??? "Book of Illusions" is a PURE MASTERPIECE. It's TRUE CULT and CLASSIC. "Book of Illusion" is genuine Art. This work deserves much wider attention in the scene. Bone-minded orthodox metal diehards, this "Book..." is not for you!!! You won't realize at least a tenth part of it. Destined only for elite intellectuals. Contact VLE: [email protected] (Krasniy; 18.07.2001)

VORACIOUS GANGRENE - "Hooked to Death" MCD
self-released
Rating: 6.5/10

This MCD provides to the listener 16 minutes of audial murder captured in five tracks of violent intensity. VG are of French origin and play a relentless mixture of grind/brutal Death Metal in the vein of early CANNIBAL CORPSE and CRYPTOPSY. Each track is performed on blast-beating speed. Vocals are just as they should be in this genre: guttural and low-tone. Lyrics deal with gore/horror themes and such song-titles as "Hacked and Scattered", "Random Gun Carnage" and "Kill to Possess" insinuate that. Basically, this release is a solid contribution to the genre of untrendy grindcore/Death Metal, but there are some evident drawbacks that cannot be left unmentioned. They have zero to do with the artistic side, because it's totally killer, but they are pretty obvious anyway. The promo-sheet says that "Hooked to Death" was recorded on 24 tracks studio and I believe that because the rhytm-section sounds very convincing (by the way, Stef, the drummer, is a pure maniac), but what the hell is with the both guitars? They sound way too fuzzy and incoherent. Solos which are brilliantly performed are awfully recorded; they are simply muffled by the rhytm guitar. I guess that "Hooked to Death" needs to be properly remastered. However, I don't think the guys will do it and here's the reason why: as far as I know, last month they recorded a new effort for promotional purposes which was supposed to be sent only to labels. I hope that VG gets a good contract which will allow them to spread the gangrene further. As for now, contact the band at [email protected] if you are interested. This stuff is for maniacs only. Earshredding! (Krasniy)

VORE "Lord of Storms"
self-released / Frozen Solid Music
Rating: 8/10

Bands like American VORE are extremely rare nowadays. I'll explain why: "Lord..." takes us back to the times when there wasn't any emphasis made on blast-beats and high speed in Death Metal genre. Lacking any fast tempoes, this CD still manages to remain utterly heavy and extreme, thus proving that speed is not vital for heaviness. VORE bring up to mind bands like OBITUARY (this one most obviously) and DEATH. So if you like the aforementioned DM legends you'll doubtlessly enjoy "Lord of Storms". By the way, I just urge all of you to listen to the acoustic "Opaque"! Band contact: [email protected] (Krasniy; 18.07.2001)

XENOMORPH - "Baneful Stealth Desire"
System Shock Records
Rating: 8/10

Second full-lenght of these Black/Death maniacs from the Netherlands after a hibernation period of 4 years (since their "Acardiacus" CD via Teutonic Existence recs). I can't trace any evolution or any of those tendencies since I haven't heard the debut, but this one is surely worthy: 8 tracks of misanthropic Black/Death Metal violence performed at ultrafast speed with some weird funky parts. Aggression, hate and dark spirituality are the most appropriate notions for describing the creative side of this effort. Add some killer production and artwork and you get a highly attractive release in all terms. Not for wimps. I haven't got the label's contact, therefore ask directly the band: [email protected] (Krasniy; 06.06.2001)

ZNICH - "Adchuvan`ny Viasny" mini (Feelings of Spring)
self-released
Rating: 9/10

The tendency of blending folklore with metal is currently, by my opinion, at the peak of its "popularity" in the underground, especially in Eastern Europe. Many acts of aforementioned genre have been formed in the previous several years. The prevailing majority of them prove to be nothing more than mediocre attempts to sound original, but some bands strike as distinctive ones. Fortunately, Belorussian ZNICH are one of those. First time I heard of them in '98. As far as I remember, it was a gig review written in Belorussian metal magazine "Legion" (RIP). The author praised ZNICH as glorious musicians and true slavonic pagan souls. Since then I had an urge to get my hands on one of ZNICH's releases. However, I didn't have the chance to do it until the current moment (November, 2000). "Adchuvan`ny Viasny" is their third release up-to-date (after "Iazychnik Ia..." (I am Pagan) and "Duh Ziamli" (Spirit of the Earth) full-length CDs). What the listener can hear on this mini-MC is a successful mixture of orthodox Slavonic folklore with rigid heavy/death metal. All lyrics, being of old Slavonic origin, are written in Belorussian and are sung in female/male clean and growling voices. The overall musical rhytm is fast and tight, so you don't get bored at least for a second. I was a bit dissapointed by the production: it lacks intensity and guitars sound a bit too weak (by the way, ZNICH's guitarist Serghey is a genius in making metal riffs sound like folk), but that's definitely not an essential drawback since the music is purely admirable. ZNICH is worth of your ears. Contact the band at [email protected] and visit their Official Homepage. (Krasniy)
