Two junior high school girls, Miaka and Yui, find a book which transports them back to Konan country, a land quite like ancient China. Miaka soon learns that she is destined to become Suzako No Miko, Konan's Priestess. In order to to attain her true power, Miaka must find her seven seishi, protectors. The first seishi Miaka comes across is Tamahome, whom she falls in love with early in the series. The other seishi are Hotohori, Nuriko, Chichiri, Taskui, Mitsukake, and Chiriko. Meanwhile, Yui's destiny is to become Seiryuu No Miko of Kotou country, Konan's enemy.
A complex and exciting series, Watase Yuu's Fushigi Yuugi aired in Japan from April 1995 to March 1996.
