Realizing Kit has been quite for some time he turns toRealizing Kit had been quite for some time I turned to her, "Penny for your thoughts?"

Kit continued to stare at the dancers for a moment longer before she blinked and turned her attention toward me. "Sorry, what? Heh..."

I smiled at her. Being as new as she was to all of this was probably overwelming to her. "Was just curious what you were

thinking. You seemed...lost in thought.."

"I always get that way," she flicked her wrist. "Nothin' to worry about there. So, ah..." she looked back out at the dancers and the fire, "what do you think?"

"I think if I tried to play with fire like they're doing that I'd need some major skin grafts. It is beautiful to watch though. I have always thought of fire as an element, but they treat it as if it were a form."

"They're pretty. The dancers," Kit said. "I always thought black hair was really pretty. That's what I tried to dye mine like, but hey...purple," she flicked one of the loose strands.

I looked sympathetically at KitÆs hair, "I'd say your hair looks fine. It frames your head quite nicely."

Her eyes moved back to mine, and a wavering smile started to form. "Yeah...? Y-you really think so?"

"Certainly! I would be curious to see what your natural color is though."

"I'm still working on that," she grinned. "It's sort of a plain sandy blonde color. This," she pointed to the hair again, "is a failed experiment in seeing if I could make permanent hair dye. I still haven't got around to finding a reverse effect for it."

My eyes widened at her statement, "Your saying it won't grow out?"

"Nope," she shook her head. "I weirded out the pigment, kwah ha! I could probably sell it to a high-paying company, if I could just get the color to stabilize. I think I'm close to getting it to reverse back to normal, but haven't found much time to study it lately."

"Well...", I coughed, searching for words, "I uh, certainly...admire your dedication to science. I don't know many who would have the...fortitude to experiment like you have."

"I like your hair too," she nodded, and leaned forward to touch the streak of silver. "Is this natural?"

"Yes, and no...you can't play with it!" I said only semi-serious. "The streak is the by product of being struck by lightning when I was very young." Well that was partly true. It hastened the process. That lock was alreadying whitening when the bolt from the blue arrived. I think it was more of a case of it hastening the process.

"I wasn't gonna experiment with it!" she pouted slightly, still stroking it for a moment. Then she sat back down. "Did it hurt?"

"Are you kidding?" I chuckled, "I didn't feel a thing. Woke up horizontal with a bunch of people looking down on me. With me wondering how I suddenly got where I was."

"I wonder what it would be like to get struck by lightning," she muses, tapping her chin. She almost looks serious enough to give it a shot. Then her eyes moved to my left hand. "Is that how you got the silver mark on your palm too?"

I raised my left hand so she can examine it. It looked like a cirlce with a single line running through it. "I've had it since day one as far as I can recall. It has changed its pattern a couple times over the years."

"Can I touch it?" she asked, staring wide-eyed. I extended my hand.

Kit reached out to take it, then yanked it toward her for a better look. Then, more gently, she placed her fingertip on the line and traced out the pattern.

As Kit traced the silvered line, Salome and Daniel reappeared. The two were holding a number of floured rolled pancakes. In addition, Daniel carried a large flagon.

Daniel smiled as he watched me and Kit. "Here," he said, and offered us the pancakes. "I hope you're hungry."

I accepted the Pancakes and handed some of them to Kit. "I am. They certainly look good."

Kit grinned and accepted them, releasing my hand as she did so. I watched as she unrolled one experimentally, and discovered that there was spiced, tenderized meat inside. As she examined another one I thought to correct her on the propiety of discecting oneÆs food in front of a host but decided there wasnÆt a way to explain it privately. Maybe IÆd mention it to her later. I shrugged internally. WasnÆt really an issue. Now if I pulled a stunt like that theyÆd think I was checking it for poison. I watched Kit take a tentative bite into one she had chosen then she grinned. "Exshullent!"

Salome smiled widely. "I'm glad you like it. The meats can be very spicy, I warn you all."

Daniel smiled, placing the flagon down beside him as he eased himself down. "If you're thirsty," he says, and proferring the flagon.

Accepting the courtesy, I lifted the flagon and Took a drink, before passing it to Kit. "A good thirst quencher. Thanks."

Kit took the flagon, and seemed to recognize the smell. Her eyes dart here and there and she grinned widely. She took a small sip and passed it to Salome.

Salome smiled at Kit and placed the flagon back in the centre of the group. Politely, she asked me and Kit, "Is this your first time in this land?"

I noticed Daniel's ears perk up.

I glanced at Kit briefly before turning to answer Salome. "Very much a first time for both of us. If I'd known about this fair land earlier, I would not have taken till today to be here."

Kit nodded, and waited until she could swallow before answering. "Same goes for me. It's nice here!"

Salome smiled warmly, "Not many of our family visit Seven Shores as it runs so slowly. That can be both an advantage and a disadvantage at times. It has many wonders to see though."

Daniel smiled and leaned close to Salome. I strained to hear his words. "Not the least of which is you," he whispered. Curious. So Salome and Daniel were an item.

I grinned momentarily, "I'm curious. Why is your land known as Seven Shores?"

Salome answered simply "Seven Shores for Seven Islands. Or at least seven ones of any size. Each island is host to a different race. On this island, the Efreeti rule."

I mused on this. It sounded like an unusal shadow. If time were conserved then the other variables of space, energy, and matter would be magnified. But if there were only seven islands that would mean space and matter might be compressed as well, leaving just energy.

Daniel looked at Salome thoughtfully. "Which one does Genni live on?" he asked.

Salome nodded "Vaeve lives on the next island along." She hesitated then explained, "Vaeve is her Djinna name. Most of us find our languages difficult for humans, so we take human names in addition to our tribal names. Genevieve being Vaeve's human name. Salome being mine."

Daniel blinked. "Hold on...she's half Djinn?"

Salome nodded "Yes, as I am half-Efreet."

Daniel chuckled softly. "The things you learn..."

I smiled, but inwardly I wondered who was Genevieve. "If I've learned anything from my time spent in shadows, it's that the multiverse allows for all things."

Kit, in the meantime, looked distracted. Her attention seemed drawn to the fire and the dancers.

Salome looked at Kit and directed her next question to the young woman. "And you, Kit, where are you from?"

One of the odd things about conversation, I have discovered, is that people tend to cloak their words and mannerisms when dealing with company. A good way to determine more natural reactions of all present being to affect distress. I decided to stage a small play and gauge reactions. ThereÆs a trick to eating spicey food. Normally itÆs not an issue. Continuing to breath while eating I felt the spices take affect. In desperation only partly faked I grabed the flagoon of watered wine and guzzled a goodly amount. Damned if it wasnÆt spicy.

Watching my colleageÆs reaction I saw Kit blink, and look back at Salome with a wry grin. "Called it Earth...but I hear there are a lot of those, so I guess I'm not quite sure which Earth. Kwah ha! Hey, you okay?" she slapped her hand on my back which just about disrupted whatever control I had remaining.

"Gwah!", I blinked hard and turned to Kit with eyes tearing. I decided I should have been an actor. "That'll wake you up in the morning!"

Kit snickered, shaking her head. "Wimp," she took a big bite of her own, chewing happily without ill effects. Initial catalog, Kit will help but also ridicule perceived weaknesses in while expousing her own strengths.

Salome for her part grinned at my discomfiture, "A woman after my own heart. We like our food to taste of something here." Initial catalog, minor distress affecting amusement. Instruction followed.

Daniel smiled at her words as he worked on his own food. No clue there.

Somewhat recovered, and only slightly red-faced, "I must confess to somewhat weaker constitution in the matter of spices. Very good much the same." With that I gingerly nibbled at my food.

Kit grinned at me, watching my face for a moment. Then she shook her head and cleaned off her fingers with a napkin.

Salome seemed to consider something for a moment then said softly, "I understand you are here at Oberon's wish."

Breathing easier now, "So I am to understand also. Yes."

Kit nodded as well and glanced between Salome and Daniel. "We were told that we would meet a Loryn here as well, yet I've seen no glimpse of *him* yet. Where is he?"

Salome hesitated then said simply, "As I understand it, something happened to Loryn that caused him to lose his memory and shift his shape. A new person emerged. Daniel here."

Daniel's cheeks coloured as Salome spoke. "I...yes, that's...what happened. To the best of my knowledge."

That would explain DanielÆs general reticience in our discussion. He must be sorely confused by such a change in paradigm. Still why the name change? I would think they would try and get Loryn back. Talk about character assasination.

My eyes narrowed slightly, "Why then are we addressing you as Daniel, if, in fact, you are actually Loryn? I have trouble enough keeping up with names as it is."

Daniel spread his hands wide. "Because I'm NOT Loryn...essentially. I don't remember my life before, I don't look as I did and apparently I don't even act as I did. I'm a different person, in almost all respects."

Except your still Loryn. Remind me never to get lobotomized. If my colleages liked me better with a different personality, they may not attempt to ever bring me back. I wonder if Loryn is still around?

Kit looked immensely fascinated at this. "Is it weird? Do you remember anything of what happened before at all?"

Daniel nodded. "Sometimes I get...flashes. When I see something or someone that apparently meant something to be before. Sometimes I see dream images as well."

Yup, Loryn was still around. Daniel was psychologically flawed. Probably unstable as well. I wondered how he would perform under stress.

"Well that's cool," Kit nodded slowly. "And I'm guessing you two are still engaged, eh? Kee hee hee!"

Salome nodded, and blushed a little, "We decided recently to continue the betrothal, yes."

Definitely an item. And the betrothal was still on. Thunderous. I watched as DanielÆs hand reached out and took Salome's and I wondered what caused his shift into a new personality. I had heard this was a danger amongst shape-changers. Was it shapechanging that had done this or something else? Time for him to defend an allegation, I decided.

"Well I am happy for you both," I shook my head, "though I dare say I don't envy your shape-changing talent one bit Daniel"

"*I* do!" Kit piped up. "That would be somethin' else! I'd love to change shape into whatever I wanted!"

Salome shook her head, "No, you would not. With shape-shifting, there is always a risk that one may lose onself forever, that the ability itself may run rampant. The more extreme the form, the greater the risk."

"In any case, I don't seem to be a shapechanger," Daniel noted. "This...well, we're still not sure what caused this change."

If it wasnÆt shapechanging, and they didnÆt know what caused it, then it very well could be temporary. Must be an amazing relationship to weather a change like that.

I looked directly at Salome, "What can we expect if Loryn were to suddenly come back?"

Salome hesitated and looked between me and Daniel. Quietly, she said "Loryn would be... different."

DanielÆs eyes sank toward the ground, but he remained silent.

Sensing the somber mood, I smiled, "Well I'm certain it won't happen." I paused briefly to let the implication slide home before changing the subject, "Has everyone received information on our mission?"

Kit pursed her lips, and slowly shook her head. "Not much..."

Salome shrugged and asked "Alright, what does each of us know?" She paused and looked at me and added "Loryn was a good man. Daniel is a better one. It has been my honour to meet both.ö

Daniel lifted his head and turned to Salome with a grateful smile. "I'm afraid I'm entirely in the dark here as far as this task goes."

I shrugged, it looked like Salome and I were the only competents present, "Okay, I'll start. From what I've been told, there have been attacks on our generation. The source is indicative of an Amberite. These attacks may be related to an increase in shadow storm activity. It is rumored that one of us cousins may possess an artifact of some kind relating to these storms. Oberon wants to know more about these storms. So he's putting together a team composed of our generation to explore these shadow storms, and I guess, look out for each other."

Kit nodded quickly, and looked back at the others. "That's about all I know, too."

Salome nodded, "Vaeve and I have been investigating these storms too for some time. Vaeve tends to track down the storms as they happen, while I look for possible related sites. One of the sites is a possible source of storms."

Who the devil was Vaeve? Obviously there was somebody in the group not present. Even Kit seemed to know something about Vaeve. Random must have briefed her when I was stomping around in the castle.

"What ARE these storms, anyhow?" Kit asked with interest. "I'm guessing it's not just a lot of thunder and rain. What do they do?"

I sat up and opened a page from a manuscript in my mindÆs eye I had memorized long ago. Adopting a teacher's voice I said, "Shadow storms may appear as normal storms from a distance, however, they are exceeding more dangerous. It's a randomization in the local shadow reality. Anything can happen in a shadow storm, with your surroundings changing dramatically from one moment to the next. The best thing to do in a shadow storm is get out, any way you can."

"Can they kill you?" Kit asked, eyes wide.

Salome nodded, "Yes and far worse things than death."

Daniel shivered. "I hope you two have been taking care."

Salome grinned "Absolutely. We run fast."

A gal after my own heart. Daniel chuckled softly and squeezed her hand.

I tilted my head slightly in Salome's direction, "I heard you might have found a gate..."

Kit just looked a little embarrassed at the coupleÆs affections. She averted her eyes from them. Interesting. Her shadow must have strong morays.

Salome nodded, "It's possibly a gate. It remains to be fully analyzed."

"And it's linked to your investigation somehow?", Daniel queried.

"I thought it was our investigation." I shrugged, and then grinned, "I don't know, maybe I'm just being nosey."

Daniel smiled. "I was referring to Salome's and Genni's previous work."

Genni, Genevieve, Vaeve I rolled the names together.

Salome replied "Well, if I'm right, this gate links to another realm. In a lot of the archaeology of that region, references are made repeatedly to eight spoked wheels, eight storms, eight realms, that kind of thing. Storms almost always are mentioned in association with such things."

I nodded, "That dove-tails with some of my own...research. There exists a possibility that within the center of a shadow storm is a...vortex to other realms." That Cerdok theory again, I thought.

Kit grinned widely. "I'd like to see that kind of vortex! What fun!" I decided privately that Kit would have to stay on a very short leash.

Salome blinked once, "If you define fun as something that looks and sounds like your worst nightmare, then yes. These kind of vortexes make Shadow Storms look like summer breezes."

She just shrugged. "Tornadoes never bothered me. I'd like to see one up close some day." Carefull what you wish for, I thought. I recalled a reference Fiona once made about uncontrolled desires.

Salome replied, "These aren't tornadoes, Kit. They are a tearing of the barriers between worlds. They can deposit monsters or dump you in a world where everything you've ever known is gone, where Pattern itself does not work. Theoretically anyway."

"So what is it we're supposed to do?" Daniel asked. "Figure out some way to stop them?"

I replied, "According to my briefing, no. We only need to find out what, or who, is causing them, and perhaps why. Sort of a reconnisance in force."

"I wanna see where they go," Kit muttered to herself, the words were barely understandable as she picked up another pancake and began eating. A very short leash indeed.

Salome nodded in sympathy, "That I don't disagree with, Kit. I would just prefer a more controlled method of so doing. One that won't leave us stranded."

"Is that where this gate comes in?" Daniel asked.

Salome shrugged, "I reported the gate to Oberon. Apart from anything else, it does provide a tactical problem. Up to now, the vortices have been random. Of late, they're more systematic. Now, suppose the source behind the vortices finds and uses a gate such as the one I discovered? Might be handy to have secured it first."

"Kinda difficult to secure a gate when you don't know what's on the other side," I mentioned.

Salome nodded, "Which is why, I suspect, we're being gathered. Firstly to investigate it on this side then..."

Daniel shivered at the implications of her words. Sounds...dangerous."

Kit cackled. "Sounds exciting."

Salome nodded "Both of these things perhaps. However, for myself, I have no particular wish to risk my life for lack of knowledge."

I tended to side with Salome. Curiosity tempered with caution. If she was as reckless as I heard, then maybe something recently had caused her to become cautious. Daniel maybe? Of course there are degrees of recklessness just like anything else.

Daniel leaned closer to her. "What are you thinking then, Salome?"

Salome hesitated then asked the group "If Oberon is putting together a team of us, of our generation, then why us?"

Daniel looked at her helplessly and shrugs.

I grinned wickedly and arched an eyebrow, "Maybe because we're expendable."

"No!" Kit elbowed me with a grin. "Because we've got brains and guts. We're not expendable at all."

Salome shrugged "Maybe it's a combination. We have a better chance of stopping anything that might come through that gate than a group of Shadow people and we're also more expendable than our Elders should it come to that. Maybe also because we're willing to sit and talk to each other without trying to score points."

Correct but way too idealistic of an analysis. I had no doubt the elders could work together smoothly if it was required.

I nodded, "I would mention one other possibility. Oberon doesn't know what we'll find on the other side. We're less of a threat to him then the various elders. Even if we should come into a force majeur...it would have less impact with us then the various princes, and princesses."

Daniel shook his head. "Salome warned me that our...family was manipulative...but I had no idea..."

I felt inclined to tell him to GROW UP! But supressed the thought as I realized he was like Kit in his innocence. So instead I smiled at Daniel and said, ôThank you.ö

Daniel blinked. "For what?"

I waved my hand vaguely, "Sorry, I thought you were paying me a compliment."

"Flavel!" Kit shook her head.

Your out of your league. Came the dark thought between my ears. However much Random denied it, I was still somehow entrusted with a large portion of her education. I recalled Random denied any desire for me to instruct her. But there was something in that interchange I missedà

Salome laughed softly, a silvery sound, "Don't worry about it, Kit. It's just part of the family, to a greater or lesser degree. Now, maybe we should leave this beach. This place is not a good idea for you to be in soon."

I got to my feet, and looked around in a casual manner. I was pleased that Salome had changed the subject before I could become more Maciaviallian then I already was.

"Why is it not so good?" Kit asked, standing as well.

Salome rose smoothly and with a wry smile, replying, "This is a Festival of Life."

This would float like a brick given KitÆs upbringing.

Daniel joined Salome, an expression of slowly dawning comprehension crossed his face. "Is that what you were referring to when you mentioned the...traditional celebrations?"

So Daniel is new to this land as well. That would help explain even more his reserve.

Salome nodded quickly, reddening slightly.

Daniel's face bloomed with a matching blush as he looked at her sidelong.

Kit just looked confused. "Festival of Life? It sounds fascinating. What, you're not gonna kill people and bring 'em back to life, are you?"

For my own part I casually removed my golden flute from my satchel and idily began to spin it like a batton. This looked to get interesting.

Salome paused then said carefully, "Well, Kit, it's more an Efreeti custom. You might be a little uncomfortable."

"Er..." she worked her jaw from side to side for a moment. "I still don't...quite...understand."

I played a few bars of, "Getting to know you." The sound seemed slightly off-key so I stopped to make an adjustment on the flute.

Salome's mouth quirked in a smile, "Appropriate music."

Kit folded her arms, exasperated.

Salome stepped over to Kit and gently took her a short distance away. She started to whisper something to Kit. I saw KitÆs eyes go wide.

I politely refrained from laughing.

"You mean, ah...they're going to..." Her face scrunched up in disgust. "How unique," she said with an awkward smile. "Well, let's go somewhere else!"

Salome whispered something else to which Kit responded, "Me? Uncomfortable? HA HA HA!" Kit rubbed the back of her neck. "Not me, I'm not uncomfortable around anything!"

Salome smiled, "Of course. Where would you like to go next?"

I put away my flute away and said to Daniel. "So how long have-" I flinched at the racket coming from where Salome and Kit were talking, "you and Salome known each other?"

Daniel glanced at me sidelong, then shrugged. "A few days since I...changed. Before that? Not much more than a week, I've been told."

I made an ambigious cough, Holy Apollo, this guy only changed a couple days ago? My, how everyone was taking it so well, "So this is sort of

new for you isn't it?"

Kit looked from Salome back to Daniel and me, catching the last bit. "Holy cow, that's fast!"

"Very," Daniel agreed. On hearing Kit's words, he smiled. "I suppose so...but it feels...right."

It had been a long time since I heard anyone speak thusly. It struck a chord within me of simpler times.

More to himself then to Daniel, I said, "And in the final analysis maybe that's the deciding factor..."

Kit tilted her head slightly, looking at me for a moment. Then she grinned. "Penny for YOUR thoughts?"

Salome smiled a little, then asked, "Where does everyone want to go

now? I am after all your guide." as she gently guided Kit and the

rest of us back to the more populated areas.

I remained silent, thinking that Salome and Daniel would have preferred Kit and I to have gone off. Salome was too good a host for that to happen though.

Kit shrugged, "Why don't we find someplace with a lot of music? That's always good for me!"

Salome smiled and replied, "Well, there will be dancing in the square

before the temple if you would like to try that. "

Kit's eyes lit up. "Oh yeah, I'm all for it! How about you guys?" she craned her head around. "Feel like dancing, or are you too stuffed with pancakes? Kwah ha ha!"

Salome grinned, "Only one way to find out." As we reached the square, lively with music and dancers, she gently led Daniel into the dance.

Both Daniel and Salome seemed at home on the dance floor essaying intricate steps. I watched the pattern of the dance and decided it was something like a slow foxtrot with hints of mambo and swing dancing thrown in for good measure. It was definitely itÆs own style though.

The pair whirled around lost to themselves.

Seeing Salome and Daniel dance, I glanced unobtrusively in Kit's direction. Privately I wondered if I should ask her to dance. She had seemed quite nervous about any sort of romanticism going on around her.

Casting my eyes in the direction of the sacred flame, I again swiveled my head in the direction of the dancers and the crowd surrounding them. The crowd seems raptly entranced with the couple as they danced. For that matter, it would seem the partners dancing were in their own world.

I would like a closer look at this sacred flame...and it would only

take a couple of minutes.

I melted unobtrusively into the crowd.

The Sacred Flame burned brightly in the darkened Temple. For the moment, there was nobody near it. Off to one side, talking quietly, was Caine, Erishanaya and Random.

The Flame almost seems to move towards me as I gazed at it and I sensed that the Flame was far more than it appeared to be.

I studied the flame and pondered the implications.

There seems to be a healing affect within the flame. So touching this fire may not be as dangerous as it appears... We haven't been forbidden or warned against touching the flame, but then again it's not normally necessary to advertise a precautionary in front of a roaring Roman Candle. A leap of faith, or sheer stupidity?

I closed my eyes and brought up the image of the pattern. Opening my eyes I nodded to myself and passed my left hand through the Fire prepared as best to contain any scream.

The Flame licked around my hand. For a moment, there was pain then it was gone replaced instead by a feeling of calm, soothing in its touch. It was like the warmth from the hearth fires I remembered as a boy when the snow fell outside and my foster father told me stories of the first days of Rome. Fond memories that i had near forgotten. How long has it been since I enjoyed such simple pleasures?

With a start, I realised that my hand was now out of the Flame, undamaged. And yet the feeling of calm, of quiet contentment lingered. Flexing my hand, I stared at the flame. Abruptly I dabbed an eye and saluted the flame Roman style.

Realizing I might be missed, I turned and headed back towards the sounds of music, comforted by another song in my breast.

After walking a short distance I sensed the presence of something in the shadows of the temple. With just a hint of caution I approached. Perceiving Kit sitting off alone I neared. "Hello again. Don't tell me the crowds got to you as well?"

"Got bored," she grinned up at me, chin in her hand. "Salome and Daniel started dancing, and I felt like a third wheel, so I decided to come in here for a bit."

"Well, I don't know about bored." I smiled my best cheshire cat grin, "There's so much to see here that it's like everything clambers for my attention."

"Hopefully not the beach," she chuckled, her eyes strayed elsewhere. "I dunno...I don't really get out to festivals much, I usually prefer books. Pretty geeky, huh?"

My grin faded to a smile, "I don't know, books have their place. And I for one spend more time among them then many. I still look forward to reading the works of Dr. Umastu."

"I'll be happy to loan you anything I've got of his when we get back," she straightened, her hand falling over her knee. "It's weird, though...I can't imagine all these people that I was so familiar with, being unreal." She scuffed her boot at the edge of the step. "I used to practically drool all over myself at the mention of Umatsu's name, and now..." she shrugged, "...I just don't care."

My smile faded further, "Shadow people can be as real as everyone else. Don't ever forget to care. They may be but reflections of the true kingdom, but they still are part of the light...even if it's just flicker." I ventured to smile again, and extended my arm and hand towards Kit, that she might take it, "We should be about or the natives may think us stogy."

Kit took my hand with a lop-sided grin. "I don't mean that I don't *care* as in no feelings...I'm just not in love with a guy I never met before. That's all."

I helped Kit to her feet, and led her towards the festivities, "Well I don't see that as a great loss. Admiration may certainly be called for if he is even half as gifted as you say."

"Yeah...he is pretty smart," she grinned. "That's another weird thing. I used to be top notch back on my world, now it's me who's doing all the learning! Kee hee hee!"

"I'd daresay Amber will benefit from your presence. I remember when I first was brought to Amber. Did you think I was was the person I am now?" Flavel pauses to laugh at some memory he recalls, "By my own measure you are doing quite well."

She closes her mouth, still smiling. "Thanks...that's a really nice thing to say. So where did you go?"

A look of puzzlement alights on my brow, "Your asking about my early years in Amber or something else?"

"I meant from the dancing, but the early years is interesting too...so both!" she beamed.

I chuckled at Kit's earnestness, "My early years were very boring, trust me on this..." I said in a way that it implied they were anything but. "As to where I was just now..." I shrugged, "I went off to touch the sacred fire."

"You DID?!" She twisted her head around to look back at the temple. "I wanna touch it too..."

I paused, letting go of Kit's hand, "You are your own person. I would caution you that if this is your decision, to only pass a hand briefly through the flames." I paused, while considering adding some additional precautionaries but at length decided whatever she would do probably wouldnÆt kill her, and might prove instructive.

Kit looked at me...looked at her hand and mine as it moved away...then back at me. "I guess it can wait," she smiled, and grabbed my hand again.

I tensed at her quick movement in my direction, but again smiled as we headed back to meet with Salome, and Daniel. "It gladdens me that I rank above a sacred flame."

"That's pretty high," she chuckled. Then she lifted her head, and we saw Salome and Daniel walking away, arm in arm. "Whoop...I think that's just about it, then."

We wandered for a time. I was concious of the warmth of her hand, the fragrance of her hand, and I relaxed into distractions. At length I said, "I wonder if they are heading toward where we are to lodge for the evening?"

"Um...I don't know." Kit started to blush, and she reluctantly released my hand. "Did you want to go to bed early or something?"

I paused the barest fraction at Kit's choice of words. Was this an invitation, or an interesting choice of words? I decided it was the latter. "Well it has been a very full day for me. What with climbing the stairs to castle Amber, and the various exploits within,ö seeing some Efreeti nearby I added, ôto which we add the great time we have here in this wonderful realm."

"Yeah, I see what you mean... And of course, I got *my* little nap, heh..." she chuckled, looking away.

Within an unseen slight of hand I again had my flute in hand. "I'll play a song as we make our way. What's your favorite?"

Kit looked at the flute, and a wide smile played over her lips. "Oh, I'm not particular...the music I usually listen to wouldn't sound very good on such a pretty instrument. Why don't you choose, eh?"

"The creator's prayer then", I launched into a slow low keyed piece that occasionally turned complex. A song of conjuration and hope.

Kit listened, and folded her hands in front of her as she listened quietly. She smiled, "That's really..." she swallowed. "It's really good."

I bowed to Kit, "My thanks for your appreciation. I was blessed with a wonderful teacher."

She bowed back, grinning. "Oh really? Must be, I really liked it. Heh... Well," she glanced up at the keep where they'll be staying the evening. "Guess this is good night, then. Thanks, it was fun!"

I returned her grin, "Pleasant dreams."

She shifted from foot to foot, as though in indecision. Then she reached out, patted my shoulder, and nodded. "Yeah. You too."

For my own part, I eventually found the quarters reserved for me. With the door behind him closed, I set down my satchel and proceeded to disrobe.

What was I thinking running my hand through fire? I'm normally not that reckless... Ipaused and glanced around the room

wildly. ...and what in Jupiter's name am I doing disrobing without first inspecting my quarters? I must be losing it.

Minutes ticked away as I examined the room set aside for me. Eventually satisfied, I stripped down to my fencing pants and bare feet.

I had been acting in random fashion tonight. The new surroundings, new people, new experiences, and KitÆs unsettling demeanor had me operating left of center. I needed to restablish my equilibrium.

Moving to the center of the room, I slowly performed a rigorous set of stretching exercises. The stretches merged into a series of flowing circular movements in the lamp light. Conjuring opponents unseen, I danced in slow motion and executed locks, holds, and tumbling techniques - techniques designed to turn an opponent's force against himself.

IÆm not as warlike as many Amberites. But I took my Akido very seriously. I liked the discipline that it involved. I also liked how it operated mostly on the redirection of energy. The use of which requiring the user to become a fulcrum of balance. I used it once against Gerard in what passed as playful wrestling and I was amazed that I managed to confuse him momentarily. He laughed and called it the art of merging with the ground.

An hour later, breathing hard and sweat dripping I again ran through my stretching routine. It never hurts to stay flexible.

A shower and bathrobe later, I laid on the bed silhouetted in lamplight while working on my journal entries. Eventually journal and sleep combined...

The next morning, much refreshed, I took in a walk along the garden pathways in the early morning. I absently worked on some poetry out loud.

Walking around a blind corner along the pathway I approached Salome and Kit in obvious dialog. "Good morning to you both," I said.

Salome rose to leave "Good morning, Flavel. I will leave you both to enjoy the morning."

I nodded to Salome, "My thanks to you for the wonder evening last night. I hope to see you and Daniel sometime soon."

Kit just glanced between me and Salome, grinning.

I glanced back and forth, certain I missed something. "The gardens here certainly are something special."

Salome smiled politely, "I am glad you are enjoying them. Now, if you will excuse me, there are matters I must attend to." She seemed strangely tense.

I nodded, "By all means."

Kit stood up, and clasped Salome's shoulder. "We'll talk later, 'kay? Take care!"

Salome nodded. With a serious expression, she added, "Think on what I said, Kit. It matters." then she turned and walked away.

Puzzled, I watched Salome leave.

I missed something here. What was it I wonder? But if it wasnÆt meant for me what would it have concerned. Maybe it was about me?

I turned to Kit. "How'd you sleep?"

She smiled a bit, rubbing the back of her head. "Pretty good, all in all...you?"

I stifled a yawn, "Well it's a little warmer then I'm used to but I got my rest."

"Heh..." She glanced around for a moment, and tucked her hands behind her back. "So, ah...you're up early!"

"Yes, well I figured early is a bit more quiet. I don't have to be on my best behavior. And I can work on my latest bits of..." I paused to find the right word, "verse without people being critical."

She grinned. "I thought it was very good."

So I was overheard thenàinteresting.

Affecting a slight embarassment, I managed to smile just the same, "Well it still needs some work, but thanks."

"You like eyes, huh?" she smiled.

I returned her smile, "Eyes are the windows to the soul."

"And we've both got two of them," she chuckled, rocking back on her heels. "Want to walk?"

"I would be delighted."

She grinned more widely, and turned slightly to begin wandering along the grassy paths. "Lots of fire here..."

My gaze swept across the vista. "Yes, it's strange to find an area in shadow with so much free energy."

"So what do you think of Salome and Daniel?" she asked casually.

A worried expression clouded my face before quickly being banished. "I wish them all the best. But Loryn has only been gone a short time. I know little about what caused Loryn to become Daniel, but I pray that the improvement is permanent."

"Yeah, Daniel seems nice. Kinda quiet, but nice," she nodded.

I chuckled, "Daniel is a blank slate. He does seem nice enough. But the fact he suffers...flashbacks makes me wonder about the totality of his transformation. His stability could be an issue. He will require close observation. Luckily Salome knows both Loryn and Daniel very well. She would detect any changes in Daniels behavior quickly; I hope."

"Yeah, I hope so too," she nodded again, her small face serious. "They're too nice, I want them to end up like they do in

fairy tales...you know? They deserve a happy ending like that."

I laughed, "There's no such thing as happily ever after. It's more like, Tune in next week to the thrilling adventures of."

"Kee hee!" she cackled, bringing her hands down to her sides. "I suppose you're right. Yeah, that sounds better anyway, no ending in sight."

I grew somewhat serious, "A touch off the subject. I hadn't had a chance to tell you earlier but I told Random in passing that I gave you my card."

She grinned, and removed the trump from her vest pocket. "Yeah, I forgot about that. Say, would it be all right if I kept it a bit longer? Yours wasn't in my deck."

I chuckled, "Actually I was hoping you would hang on to it."

"Sure!" she beamed. "I really like it. Maybe I can get you to autograph it, even!"

"I would but the cards are somewhat resistant to being marked. They can be defaced, but adding to them is never wise."

"Ohhh, I didn't know that...I'll take good care of it, then," she nodded, and tucked it back into her pocket. "Dad said he'd get some done for me, too, so I'll give one to you after they're finished."

I nodded, "I'd like that."

She grined, ducked her head for a moment and rubbed the back of her neck. "So, ah.... That poetry you were reciting. Tell me more about that?"

I shrugged, "The problem with my always looking controlled and calculating, is it really throws people when I cut loose. Music and Poetry is what I do to blow off steam. Say, any chance you play an

instrument?"

"Well...no, not really. Sometimes I can get a shrill little noise from blowing over the top of a beaker, but that's about it."

"Well tis no matter. You should make a list sometime of all things you wish to do. Your pretty much immortal. All the time in the world to get up to speed."

She grinned widely. "I want to play the guitar, like Django Reinhardt."

I mimicked a lilting, sing-song voice, "Then I daresay, one day, you shall."

Kit snickered. "You have a nice voice. Did you have to practice, or was it always a good one?"

I grinned wryly, "Oh, I'd like to say I always had the gift. But honestly it was many years of training. I was a Bard once upon a time."

"Really?! I never would've guessed that when I first saw you. Bit more believable now, though... Did you enjoy it? I'd love to be able to sing."

"The training was rigorous. The exercises in vocal control would leave me dizzy and breathless. It's a matter of dedication. If you really wish to learn something time and money are no barrier to you."

She nodded vigorously. "Oh, I do want to learn. There's a ton I'd like to learn. Archery, psychology, sewing, singing, interpretive dance... I sure am lucky."

I smiled, "All you need do is stop thinking like a mortal. That is one of the barriers you have before you."

"So if I get stabbed, say, would I survive? Or can I only be killed if my head gets chopped off or some other such thing?"

"Uh, No. You'd be very dead if you were stabbed sufficiently. Although it would require significantly more damage to cause your demise."

Kit nodded slowly. Then she looked up at him sharply. "Is there a library about this stuff? Some books I could study? I mean, I really should find out about WHAT I am before I start trying to act like an Amberite princess."

I laughed, "Nothing beats on the job experience. Seriously, the Amber castle library has vast resources. I would encourage you to avail yourself of the books there when you have a moment's lesure."

"Whenever THAT will be," she chuckled. "Until then, I'm *afraid* I'll just have to pester you with my questions."

"Honestly I don't mind your questions. I would be more worried if you were not asking questions. A loose cannon can be very dangerous."

"Hey, Flavel?" she paused in her walking, and bit her inner cheek for a moment. "Um... I just wanted to thank you, you know, for helping me out with all this. I know I must seem like a pre-schooler with a bunch of college grads, but uh...Thanks."

I wasnÆt looking entirely in her direction as I was scanning the pathway. What I did see was sudden movement closing in fast from KitÆs direction. What happened next wasnÆt even conscious reation. Kit was very close with both arms extended moving forward. My legs buckled momentarily and my torso leaned backwards as I placed my weight on an arm extending to the ground. Pushing off with my legs I let my momentum and weight center on my arm and I pivoted tucking in knees at the same time. A half spin on my arm and I was again on my feet to KitÆs left side. Kit found herself hugging air.

She staggered for a moment, and looked at me with a hurt expression. "What? Did I do something wrong?"

I went a shade of white as I realized she had only tried to hug me. "N-no, nothing wrong." I ducked my head momentarily and then raised my head. "You meant to hug me didn't you? I'm afraid I might owe you an apology. I...don't normally let people into my personal space. It's another piece of my training I'm afraid."

"Oh, it's okay," she shook her head quickly, and put her hands on her cheeks which had grown a hot shade of pink. "S-sorry...I should be going now, I haven't showered yet, kwah ha..."

I composed myself as best I could. I was an idiot for over reacting, "Yes, I should be cleaning up as well." I watched Kit departed and murmured to myself, "As soon as I figure out how..."

Kit glanced back over her shoulder, sighed, and hugged her vest closer as she hurried away.

I considered chasing after her. Telling her it was nothing to be upset about. Telling her it was just a reflex. That I was just caught off guard. Watching her hurry away I shook my head. I did tell her that.

Unconcerned with where my feet carried me, I began walking. Maintaining a facade of cheeriness I wandered lost in thought.

Well that was at least a level 6 social blunder. How could I have reacted like that? She was right next to me practically telegraphing her intentions. It's impossible that I could not have seen it for what it was...an innocent hug of thanks.

Reaching the shoreline, I bent down and selected a number of small, flat stones. Straightening, I gazed out into the surf.

There in lies the problem. She is so incredibly, stupidly, innocent. She doesn't know any propiety regarding our family and I'm the last person who should be teaching her. She didn't have a clue when she jumped me for a hug. Lucky I didn't go for a leg sweep.

A flick of the wrist, and a stone launched from my hand. The rock skipped accross the waves a dozen times before a final wave took it into it's watery embrace.

If this is Random's idea of training Kit, he's in for a rude shock.

Another stone streaked from my hand to impale a distant wave.

Unless the lesson was meant for both of us. Fiona and Random were talking for an awful long time back at on shadow earth, and Fiona seemed pretty free and easy handing out my card to Random.

Random's words came back to haunt me, "You like Kit, yes?"

Damn the elders! They must have known something like this was going to happen. She's precocious, impulsive and so dangerously open...and I'm just the opposite! We're like cats & dogs.

With a snarl I launched the last of my rocks in a long sailing arc.

And what of our team now? Kit's innocent and probably hurt, Daniels ignorant, I'm paranoid, and Salome...Fiona had said she was reckless. With a team like this, how can we possibly fail?

After several minutes of looking out at the waters, I sighed and turned away.

On the brighter side of life, I guess Kit won't make that mistake again. An ounce of caution is another year of life.

I wonder if there was a lesson in this for me?

Heading away from the beach, I continued my ponderings.

I'm not normally this reactionary. What was the point at which I acted thus...Fiona! At my doorstep. Out the blue. I've been off balance ever since.

Swerving from the path that led back to the others, I walked alongside the beach.

Sure enough that's where it started. And I got a lot more defensive when Random showed up with Kit. Even more so at castle Amber. What is Fiona telling me this time?

Lost in memories, I recalled the times when I first visited and briefly lived in Castle Amber. The elders were there with all of they're private nuances, have finished sentences, and occassional jokes. No cousins but myself. While all around me were people who had played the game for century after century. Vastly more skilled, and adroit in their activities.

Assuredly this is where I acquired the bulk of my habits. Even with Fiona's confidence, I would not say I held my own. But I presented too small a target for most to trouble themselves with. But it was hell in it's own way to always be on guard...so I came to live elsewhere. Now I'm back and so are my habits. So what the Devil have I learned from all this?

I paused to watch a burning-butterfly on the wing thinking back to Kit, Daniel, and Salome. At length my eyes widen fractionally as the lesson I needed to learn came to me.

My cousins are not elders.

Following the path of the burning butterfly with my eyes, I noticed a nearby tree. Not unusual in and of itself for the fact the tree was occupied by Kit. I looked around. Nobody seems present. I turned away momentarily and scowled, before again watching the tree and its occupant.

What in Dionysus's cup is Kit doing up a tree? A moment's consideration that she might be scouting or spying I quickly discarded. With a shrug more to myself then anyone present, I begans to walk toward the tree. Might as well get this over with. There is no way this empasse can be allowed to remain.

As I approached the tree, Kit saw me. "Hi," she smiled a little. "And pleasant day to you, good sir."

That's a good sign, at least she's not throwing pinecones at me. Approaching the tree I called up, "Hello Kit. How's the view up yonder?"

She straightened her chin, looked around, then shrugged. "Okay, I guess."

Reaching the tree, I paused and looked up. "Are you accepting company or is this your private tree?"

"Heh... Not mine. You can come up, if you want, it's not so hard. Getting down, on the other hand... Only a problem if you've got vertigo." She looked at him expectantly.

Judging the distance to be 20 feet up and the tree looking...fairly safe I proceeded to set aside my cloak, and satchel and began climbing. Picking out limbs with care and testing there strength I reached Kit's position in few minutes time. The top of the tree swayed slightly with our combined weight. Looking across from Kit I said, "I wanted to talk to you about what happened earlier today."

"Oh. That." She looked down at her knee. "I wasn't being very proper. Sorry."

"I think we both screwed up a little bit there." A wry grin twisted my lips. "I would recommend not doing...abrupt activity that involves close proximity with most royalty. It would be dangerous in some cases. As for myself. I should have realized you're not part of the Amber cliche. At least not yet. My behaviour was...incorrect."

"Not yet, huh?" she started to grin a little more. "Oh boy, I can't wait to take Corruption 101."

The wind picks up momentarily and the tree sways momentarily with an ominous creaking. I grew concerned about the relative strength of our tree, "I think we best be getting down or we'll be taking Falling 101."

Kit chuckled. "All right...you go first, I'll follow."

Keeping close to the trunk I worked my way down letting my weight guide me toward nearby branches. I dropped from the last twelve feet and nimbly rolled to my feet.

Kit came after, moving a bit more awkwardly. She slipped once, but caught her elbow around a branch before going too far. She grinned sheepishly, and grabbed the trunk with her legs and moved more carefully until she could drop safely to the ground. Brushing her hands on the sides of her pants, she looked back up at where they'd sat. "Haven't done that in years."

I brushed myself off, "Yes, it's been awhile for me as well."

She plucked a twig from her hair and flicked it away. "So..."

I picked up my cloak and began to put it on. "We have a mission to perform for the crown of Amber. In between I teach you what I can. I cannot afford to attempt to reverse over a hundred years of learned behavior. Nor do I expect you to come up to speed overnight. I ask you to...overlook my reactions as a product of what I am. Keep in mind too that what I am has kept me alive on more then one occasion."

She nodded quickly, her eyes widening a bit. "Oh, I don't blame you at all, you don't have to apologize. So, uh... Yeah. Let's pretend it never happened?"

Inwardly I hated constantly having to instruct Kit on various details. I knew that this would eventually create a wedge between us that would kill any possibilities of friendship. Then again, a dead girlfriend would certainly limit whatever future relationship that we could expect. I wondered privately if this was RandomÆs way of ensuring nothing happened between Kit and I. Regardless, she was too new at all this to be burdened with the distraction of romance.

So instead of agreeing with her to forget the whole thing I shook my head, "On the contrary, we must remember and learn from the experience. I don't say this to be mean. When you make a mistake with...many of us. They will never forget. I of course understand it was merely a...mutual mistake."

"A mistake..."; She glanced back over her shoulder. "Yeah. I just don't want to ruin our friendship, that's all. Still friends?"

I nodded, "Of course Kit." I grimaced momentarily, "I need say one more thing that you need to understand."

"All right," she folded her hands behind her back. "What is it?"

I paused, unsure of how to state this. "When you were up in the tree you said you were sorry. A peculiarity amongst us is that we rarely apologize for our actions."

"Well, I am sorry. I embarrassed you, didn't I?"

"It's not about embarassment. We are royalty. This is going to sound silly but take it to heart. We don't normally apologize."

"It just seems so rude," she shook her head, and sighed. "I don't like it."

I grinned while trying to make light of the subject, "Fine don't like it. I think part of this is the issue that Royalty can do no wrong. Whatever the case, I would recommend being circumspect with your regrets, and don't expect others that are royalty to offer condolences."

"Okay," she nodded. "But just for the record, I apologized," she smiled a little. "I need to go back to Amber as soon as I can to read some books on this. Then I won't put you on the spot so much."

I shrugged, "Some of this is covered in books, there are of course the numerous unwritten rules. Don't worry. Most everyone knows you're new at this so they won't take notice for awhile. Daniel, Salome, and I will help you out as best we can to get you over the learning curve. Besides, we've all been there before."

She inclined her head for a moment. "Good to know. Thank you." She shifted awkwardly for a few moments. "Oh, by the way, Dad wants me to learn the sword under his tutelage."

Having arrived back at their lodgings I stopped and turned to her, "That is how it should be."

"I suppose so. Well...have a good day." Kit bowed slightly, and turned away to walk up to her room.

Arriving back at my quarters, I turned my attention back to my own studies. An hour later there came a knock on the door.

"Flavel?" somebody called. "It's Daniel."

I opened the door. "Hello Daniel." I held a record book in one hand and a unfeathered stylus in the other. "I was just taking down some notes on this wonderful realm. What can I do for you?"

Daniel smiled. "You can come with me to the stables. Salome's arranged an excursion of sorts for us today. She and Kit are going to meet us down there."

I placed my book and stylus into my bag. "At your convenience then." I followed Daniel to the stables.

The walk with Daniel seemed typical of what I had already seen of him. Unless there was something he needed to say, he didnÆt say anything. Needless to say, the walk was very quiet.

The young woman emerged into the light which glinted off gently curling blonde hair that just reached her shoulders. Green eyes sparkled as Kit walked happily alongside Salome, the younger woman's stance noticeably straighter and more confident...

Kit grinned broadly at me and Daniel. "Well! And good morning to you all!" She touched her heart, forehead, and lips in the Efreeti greeting, feeling quite good about it. "Ready to ride?" a mischievous sparkle glinted in her eyes.

Daniel's eyebrows rose as he glanced towards Salome with an almost knowing smile, then returned Kit's greeting silently.

Taking a cue from Daniel, I followed suit and repeated the gesture as well, saying to Kit, "I like what you've done with your hair."

"Salome fixed it with a little voodoo magic," she winked. "I didn't do a thing."

In short order, four fine Arabian steeds were brought out. Salome lightly mounted one and smiled, "Come, the day lies before us, my friends."

I mounted one of the horses with deliberation and gently issued it a brief series of commands to ascertain its responsiveness and training. Looking to Salome I said, "Very nice horses indeed."

Daniel took things more carefully as he mounted his horse, apparently he was unsure of his riding ability. Once he was in the saddle, however, he seemed more at ease, taking the reins and guiding the Arabian around to Salome's side. "So where are we off to?" he asked with a smile.

Kit grunted slightly, hauled herself up into the saddle with a little less grace than the others, but settled in easily. The horse pawed at the ground, dancing a few steps. She seemed quite excited.

Salome smiled, addressing all "We ride to the Ruins of Al-Ekalaban, home of Fire."

With that, she wheeled her horse, heading outside, away from the palace, the city and towards the unknown desert.

I shrugged and cantored my horse to follow. I didnÆt know the place she talked about but the ôsource of fireö definitely sounded intriguing.

Kit sat straight and formal in her saddle, mimicking SalomeÆs excellent example of how to ride. It appeared that Kit was a quick study in the art of Equistrianism.

The horses passed beyond the high palace walls, and Kit lifted her eyes to see the wide expanse of desert sands looming up ahead.

I watched her smile broaden.

Her horse flicked its tail, and shook its mane. "Salome?" Kit raised her eyebrows and grined. "My horse wants to run.ö Looking at Kit she seemed to exude excitement from every pore.

Salome smiled and opened her mouth to answer.

Her words were swallowed up as in the distance a black howling vortex erupted into being. Sounds like the screams of tortured souls filled the air. The vortex looked as if it is made of some black, greasy substance like oil mixed with blood. And it felt utterly alien. It began to churn the air and sand around it.

Kit's horse, already on edge and flighty, bolted taking Kit with it. The horse's eyes were white with fear at the phenomenon ahead.

Salome followed, but her path took her perilously close to the vortex. A long, skeletal arm, viciously clawed, swept out of the vortex, and scored gashes along Salome's steed which immediately began to fester and burn. The steed, maddened with pain, reared dropping Salome underneath its hooves. Curling into a foetal ball, she protected her head and abdomen, there came a swift ripple of movement and then she sank smoothly into the sand, taking herself out of harm's way. She surfaced a short distance away, coughed sand, looked around and yelled something in a tongue that seems old, arcane, at the vortex.

And it moved towards her. With a feral smile, she led it away, calling over her shoulder "Flavel, help Kit. Daniel, tell the City a Sandstorm comes and get ready for a Trump Call." Then the vortex chased a fireball, howling its fury to the gathering storm...

I paused a split-second to hurl my gold flute into a nearby dune before wheeling my mount and giving chase to Kit.

I hope that flute manages to stay in place. We'll have merry hell trying to piece together where this took place if it's missing.

At a full gallop I risked a glance back at the Vortex and Salome before putting my full attention to Kit's uncontrolled departure.

With dismay I realized, that Kit might weigh 100 pounds soaking wet, and I had twice her mass. The chances of catching her were slight, so I paced my horse with the goal being to keep her in sight and intercept her flight if her mount should change direction or throw her.

Up ahead I could see Kit clutching the reins in her hand with a death grip. I could see her trying to signal the horse but the signals only caused the horse confusion. Losing the reigns to her horse Kit settled on hanging onto the horses neck.
